2013-2014 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You could call and check that they've received it. I was contacted by email because they hadn't received one of the other forms along with the reservation form.

After sending back the reservation form and whatever other form it was in the acceptance packet, has anyone heard anything else from the school?

EDIT: Just scrolled up. But no one else has received any confirmation since then, yes? I'm being paranoid about it being lost in the mail over the holidays haha

I actually received a letter by mail confirming I had turned in the reservation form. It takes two weeks(?), but don't quote me on that. With the holidays it'll probably take longer. Good idea to call and check later on.

Interviewed first week of November/ accepted Dec 10th.
I sent the reservation form in about a week after I got it and it wasn't marked as received until Monday, Jan 6th because of the holidays (I called admissions to ask if they got it).

Anyone else definitely attending? 🙂

YES!
And am really considering withdrawing my application from other schools... but other people keep telling me that it's still too early to do so?

I canceled my one remaining interview, but am leaving my other applications in just out of curiosity (will withdraw after a decision is made)

Has anybody who interviewed on/after 11/18 heard a decision?

Can any current students comment on off campus housing? Where do students typically live? Thanks in advance!

I think I heard the Camden is popular. A friend of mine lives in Redwood. Hopefully a UM student pops up and answers your questions.

I'm actually thinking about renting a house, hopefully on a quiet street but within walking distance. I like my place to be somewhere to go away from school/stress and relax so if anyone on here shares the same sentiments, pm me and we'll talk. I'm 23/m btw. Thanks.

Withdrew my II for the 27th today. Just don't think I would attend over Wisconsin, because of the tuition difference. Hope one of you gets my interview slot, and good luck!

Pre-interview hold as of 12/17. Complete 11/2. Anyone else in this situation?

ilikeponies: Ugh. Sucks. Looks like we have a few common schools: Jeff, TCMC, NYMC, and of course Maryland. I got rejected from Hofstra too. Haven't heard a peep from any of those other schools.

For those of you who have interviewed for MSTP here, what was it like? How were the students? How was the city? I am really looking forward to this interview!!! The only issue is that my interview is split: MD interview on Monday, MSTP interviews on Thursday. Oxcam on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Is there an easy way to get from Baltimore to Bethesda?

Anyone knows when the merit scholarship will be sent out. Heard its in january but around approximately what time period in jan?

I'm assuming our FAFSA needs to be complete before we hear anything about scholarships, correct?

On Hold for MD/MS and application sent to regular MD consideration--- Snail Mail dated 1/14/2014

Hey guys, I was complete here in July. Was put on hold in November.

Would any of you know how a pre-interview LOI would be received? Negatively, positively, don't care, etc?

I'm in the exact same situation. I've e-mailed them an update/continued interest letter and they responded that they received it and would add it to my file. I don't know how much of a weight in holds in their decision making, but it can't hurt to try!

Does UMD send complete emails? I only got a "Secondary application received" email. Is that all you're supposed to get?

I just got the invite to complete the secondary, an email about my payment getting received, and nothing else until the interview invite.

I did the same thing. Hoping us pre-interview holds hear something soon!

Anyone know if there's a second look fair?

Can anyone elaborate on what the interview day is like? My interview is next week and I haven't heard anything from the school... Also, does the campus tour include a lot of walking outside? I'm wondering if I'll need to bring a change of shoes in this weather 🙁

Best of luck at your interview!

Thanks! =) UMB is my state school and one of my top choices, so I'm really hoping it goes well

Any suggestions on nice, affordable hotels in the area for interview stays? I have the list from their website but wanted to know if any of you would recommend one in particular. Thanks so much in advance!

Hey everyone,

I was put on hold in November, but just received an II today! I sent an update letter after I put on hold, so I'm guessing that helped.

If you are on a pre-interview hold and are still waiting for an II, don't lose hope!

Congratulations on the invite and thank you for the hope! I also sent an update letter. Fingers crossed!

You give me hope! I was put on hold 11/22 and sent in an update letter 12/15 (wanted to send it immediately after seeing I was put on hold but decided to give it a little while)... still waiting on that interview but I reeeally hope one is coming my way very soon!

Congrats! Do you mind telling us when your interview is for? Just wondering how many more spots they have left...

When people sent updates, did they get an email back confirming that they received it/ added it to their file?

Yes. I got the confirmation email the next day (I sent the update in the late evening).

Can any current students comment on how UMD's letter grading system affects stress and competition? Seems like a huge drawback to me.

Can any current students comment on how UMD's letter grading system affects stress and competition? Seems like a huge drawback to me.

I'm not a student, but I have read tons of posts on this topic. Seems to me like there are 2 important things:

1. Every school ranks their students so that they have a way to present students in deans letters to residencies (except a handful, and this is being phased out supposedly), so either way you are going to have a rank. The only difference between p/f and a/b/c/d is that you will have a letter grade assigned to it. You are still 'competing' for your spot on the ranking list
2. If you are a person who would be stressed if they saw a C or B rather than a Pass (even if the grade is a 75 or 80), maybe it isn't for you. But if it's the only thing holding you back, I heard you get over it quickly anyways.

General consensus is that every single school will tell you that their students are non-competitive and very collegial and blah blah. Of course there are always the few that aren't.

Hope that helps
