You are assuming women are more qualified than men. If you look at the gpa/mcat, guys on average have higher mcats but girls have higher gpas. Schools that skew gender are outliers, and on average men and women get in at around the same acceptance rate, so we can roughly guess that men and women are are equal footing.

In order for you to be right, for every qualified male applicant, there has to be 2 equally qualified female applicants. Extremely doubtful.

Schools do not just automatically end up with a 50/50 perfect ratio. They do that on purpose. You're saying you wish you wouldn't have applied here because more girls get in than boys because of some unprofessional rumor about an admissions director. All I'm saying is, maybe more girls get in because they find the girls applications to be stronger. That's it. It may not be true, but to instantly jump to conclusions about the adcom being perverted is disgusting (I know you aren't the one that brought that up...) either way, I hope you get an II so you can come to your own conclusions about the school's admissions process.

At two schools I know for a fact that they try their best to be gender blind and they do come up with relatively balanced ratios. It varies year to year but it averages out.

I said I wish I didn't apply here based on the ratio, similarly to how I avoided most state schools that preferred IS over OOS. It makes sense. I didn't agree with the other poste'rs comments about the admissions director or adcom. I merely said the disparity in the interview and acceptance rate between the genders was enough to make me regret applying. I don't know the exact reason why the ratios are skewed, but the fact is that they are.

Fair enough. I'm just not a fan of jumping to conclusions especially when it's something as absurd as what was posted, but you aren't to blame for that. Good luck with the rest of your cycle.

Thanks. Yeah I wouldn't believe anything like that based on some random person posting it on an online forums.
 
I also agree that UMD accepts more women than men. They have been doing this for a very long time so it's not just a 1 or 2 year thing. Maybe it has something to do with the dean but idk. He did seem pretty weird to me though. First thing he did when he entered the room was make sure all the window blinds were open and moved a chair from one side of the room to the other. He then proceeded to tell us that he's claustrophobic..
 
Perhaps they are allowed to recruit more women due to the historic shortage of women in medicine, even though the numbers have been changing recently.

I never said it was okay, just that Maryland isn't the only place and it happens in favor of both sexes. I'm not trying to justify their class profile just because some other schools have the opposite profile. I had basically the exact same reaction you did when I realized Northwestern was 91 guys/63 girls. I just said not all schools hit the 50/50.
 
I haven't gotten an interview invite here yet but I think Maryland does show some gender bias. I've had the msar since back in 2009 and at least since then, there been at least 20 more girls than guys in every one of its entering class. Bad news for me since I'm a guy but I'm also OOS so I'm probably not going to get an interview invite anyways
 
Accepted! Interviewed 10/9. Parents called me about a big envelope in the mail while I was at another interview! =) Oh joyful day.

I asked Dr. Foxwell and he told me the skew was weird, but it happens since the committee does things gender blind. More girls end up being accepted and matriculating each year by chance. That is what he told me and you can choose to believe it or not. Regardless, the rumors and descriptions of Dr. Foxwell's personal life and behaviors are crude.
 
I got an email that they just received my secondary. I was complete in late July and OOS. Not sure if I should be hopeful or not. Did this happen to anyone else or does anyone have any insight?
 
Rejected via snail mail, IS. Letter dated Nov. 5.

This makes me wonder, if my state school rejected me (for which I have more than adequate stats, including excellent research and clinical lab work experience), what are my chances at other schools? I haven't heard back from anywhere else yet.

I wouldn't think like that. This process is such a crapshoot. I've heard from OOS schools but not any in state (there are 7 schools where I am...)I hope you have better luck elsewhere!

I hope you're right.... and thanks. I just hope that there isn't anything about my application that's turning them off. I was severely restricted by the number of schools I could apply (I had to stay in the area for personal reasons), so this stings a little extra.

It may be the clinical lab work and by that I mean lack of patient contact. I'm not sure what you were doing exactly. I was put on hold last year and never got an II. I spoke to dean Foxwell about it and he said the only remark on my app was "lacks clinical experience". I rectified that and got an interview this year. I am OOS though so I'm surprised you got rejected as an ISer. The lack of patient contact is a deal breaker at most schools. I got three interviews last year at great schools and they all wait listed me because of that one aspect.

I volunteer at the hospital on a weekly basis (about 65 hours since last year) and have over 200 hours of physician shadowing. I work at a lab that has a decent amount of patient interaction too. Patients call/come in and I'm really the only one who talks to them. Honestly, I feel I make a much bigger difference to people's lives at the lab rather than at the hospital.

Wow, then I have no idea why they would reject you. You should call dean Foxwell and ask. That decision doesn't seem right.

I was completed 9/22; I get that it's a bit on the later side, but it shouldn't have been such a bust. I'm also a decent writer, so this is all a mystery to me. First thing on Monday I'll call Foxwell and see if he confused my application with someone else's. Ah, the sweet taste of denial 😛

So, is no news good news at this point? No II, not placed on hold, and no rejection...yet. OOS with ties to the area. Complete 08/12. Anybody in the same boat?

I am! OOS with ties complete 9/3. Although, the status did finally change to "under review" on Nov 1.
 
Do you guys kno when the 2018 class fb will be set up? Also, anyone started looking for affordable housing in the area come july-August. I live in the baltimore area but still far away from the school. So I am trying to find apt or house nearby at an affordable price. PM me if you trying to embark on this together. thank you

Accepted! Interviewed 10/21. Parents told me I got a letter from UMD and I had to ask what size the envelope was before I had them open it! Will most likely be matriculating.

Placed on hold 🙁 Was complete late September. I'm pretty disappointed, especially since I did research at the SOM this summer and got a killer rec from a professor there. I have a 3.6/3.3sGPa with a 31, so I know I'm on the lower end stat-wise.

Does anyone know what tends to happen to people on hold? If this is an early rejection or if I can truly expect to be continuously reviewed?

I'd like to know this as well! Anyone have any insight? PS- I'm a re-applicant; last year I applied suuuuuper late and was rejected not long after. This time I'm grateful it's not an immediate rejection, at least! GL to you, snowwhat!

Same here. I'm not too surprised by it (since I am OOS and was complete in early-mid September), but oh well.

Just letting you guys know that the current available interview dates are late February-March. Not sure when UMD interviews through.
 
Pre-interview hold too. From what I remember from last year's thread people did get interviews later on, so I don't think it's an actual rejection.
