2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, they must host a lot of applicants on each interview day then.

Been under review for 8 weeks now...submitted 8/12...not looking great

II Secondary complete 9/17
IS GPA ~3.9 MCAT >34 😀

Any insight into if OOS matriculants are offered scholarships to bring down tuition to IS levels?

if i don't have research experience, is that a big red flag at this school? not sure how to answer that "please describe your research experience" when it's not optional :/

I know they want to see research but their big thing is community service and making sure you care about the community. If you can overdose your application with community service you have a shot at making up the missing research.

They offer merit-based scholarships to either oos or is students from $5-30k a year, in $5k increments. About 50 in the class (out of about 200) got at least $5k.

Can a current student give a breakdown of typical week during MS1? What time start each day, end, free study time? Found curriculum in general on Miami site, but not breakdown by week. If can find elsewhere, link is appreciated. Thanks.

Current fourth year med student at Miami here. I'm not involved in the admissions process (I promise! lol), so feel free to PM if you have any burning questions that you'd like answered. 🙂 I absolutely love my school. We have a huge focus on community service and leadership, with the majority of my class being involved in running health fairs and other programs. UM definitely has one of the most active student bodies out there. One of the deciding factors for me was the Academic Societies program. It's seriously like Hogwarts. I'm Head Girl (okay, "Director") of a House (okay, "Society") this year, so I lead history and physical training sessions for first and second years, take them into the hospital to help them practice interviewing my patients, organize social events and community service events within my society, and have mentoring meetings to help younger students with setting up shadowing, finding fun extracurriculars and research projects, and choosing their future careers.

You asked about the daily life of a first year med student. Our curriculum is a block schedule, so you have an anatomy boot camp at the start of the year. There are basic science modules, then organ system modules in your first and second year. Your schedule changes day to day and the actual schedule is password protected (which is probably why you can't find it). As an example, though, you could have hour-long lectures from 8-12, an hour break at 12 for lunch/club meetings with free food, and then either a few more lectures from 1-3ish (for the non-anatomy blocks), training with your Society for a couple of hours, or anatomy lab in the afternoon until you finish dissecting in the evening. I don't think I ever stayed past 6 pm, but some people in my class liked studying in the anatomy lab and would stay longer. You don't dissect every day, though; anatomy groups rotate through dissecting and teaching other groups about their dissections, so you don't need to be in the lab for hours dissecting every day. Anatomy only lasts about 8 weeks, though, and after anatomy, you have a TON more free time. There were often days after the anatomy block when I'd be done at 2 pm. There's definitely enough time to study.

For the person who asked about scholarships, I was an out-of-state student who received a scholarship for 15K/year. I think that knocks tuition down to about the in-state level.

Good luck to you all! 🙂

Whoops, double-post. Don't judge my school on my computer skills, please. 😉

II today. Complete late July. I've had the has been reviewed status for about a month. LizzyM ~ 70. OOS

How long does if take to get a secondary after your Amcas is verifiedl? . I recieved an email saying it had been recieved and they are going to make a decision shortly.

IIRC, the Dean, Dr. Weisman, said they were doing 40 the first round. I think it might have something to do with the fact that last year their first acceptances were sent out earlier than October 23rd, so they're catching up... Not really sure though.

Anyone know how receptive they are to In The Area emails?

Also is it too early to send one for January?

Thanks

Wow. I was honestly not expecting to be blown away by Miami like I was. After today I'm totally in love! 😍

It's really high up on my list now. I would say it's #1, but I wanna let the contact high wear off first

Cool! Same to you! I hope we both hear good news November 20th.

I was wondering if any current students can shed some light on this:

So one of the things students shared is that the ranking/quartile system is kind of annoying and makes you a little more stressed. But then Dr. Weisman said they would only include your rank in your dean's letter if you requested it, like if you needed it for a competitive speciality. So why do students stress out about it? He made it seem like you can choose to be P/F and not have your rank published if you want.

So, we're medical students. To get where we are today, all of us were at the top of our undergraduate programs. When you get to medical school, it can be a bit of a shock to realize that you're in the bottom quartile of your class. It doesn't mean that you aren't doing well; it just means that you have some crazy-smart classmates. This produces a little stress initially (especially at the beginning of first year), but this is common wherever you go. After anatomy, people start to realize that they're doing well no matter what quartile they're in.

All of our classes are P/F and are reported that way on our transcripts. However, we do have an associated number on our transcript (ex: Anatomy: 93). Residency programs aren't provided a range, class averages, or anything related to that number, so it really doesn't mean anything to them. At many other medical schools, students receive Honors/High Pass/Pass/Fail grades, and some schools only give Honors to 10% of students, which I think would be pretty stressful. I really like our grading system.

For those of you who haven't thought about Dean's Letters and residency application processes (you don't need to yet!), the Dean's Letter is a composite letter that a Dean puts together to showcase your application and help you apply for residencies. It talks about how you did in your third year clerkships, any research that you've done, any leadership positions and community service projects you've organized, etc.

I read my Dean's Letter within the last two weeks before it was sent to programs, and I spoke with my friends about it. Only a few of us had our class rank included - it's not part of the letter normally, but if you're one of the top 10 students by GPA for the year, of course Miami is going to include that! The Dean's Letter is all about Miami showing off how are awesome you are.

At the very end of the Dean's Letter, you're given a one-word "rank" according to your class quartile (this is where our grading system actually comes into play). Every school does this - it's not unique to Miami. There are four quartiles and four words, and there's a fifth word for the top few students every year. The cool thing about our Dean's Letter is that we put a heavy emphasis on extracurriculars at our school. If you made substantial contributions in the areas of leadership, community service, and research, our Deans will actually bump you up a quartile - you can be in the 4th quartile by grades but still be ranked the 3rd quartile in the end because you were a really active student. If you're first quartile and you make major contributions in all three areas, you get a gold star and get the top rank-word.

That, and Alpha Omega Alpha selection, are the only times that I've ever seen our grading system being used.

... I hope I answered your question at some point in my answer. 😀

To clarify, that Dean's Letter one-word rank is NOT "Leonora is in the bottom quartile of her class." It's "Leonora is a good student and we recommend her for your program." I think something like "good" is the bottom quartile. The very top ranking is "Leonora is a superior candidate and we recommend her for your program." Other "ranks" are outstanding and excellent.

So, your class rank ends up being a single word in a 3-5 page document detailing how awesome you are.

I have been complete since 8/13 and still have the status that says: "Your application to the UM Miller School of Medicine is complete and is currently being reviewed by the admissions committee."

Is it seriously possible that they haven't reviewed my application yet? I mean, it doesn't even seem like I am on "hold" or anything. Is anyone else in a similar boat?

I have the exact same issue, complete since 8/9. I can't seriously believe that they would not have reviewed our app in 2 months...so yep.

Same here, I've been there since the first week of August. Based on what I've read in this thread, they've scheduled interviews into January already, so they may not have a huge focus on scheduling interviews for now (pure speculation on my behalf).

Just remember that you can't predict anything based on stats, complete date, etc. during the cycle, as I've witnessed a few times so far. I've been on both sides of this, and I'm much more relaxed when I am "hands off". If it's going to happen, it will happen regardless of stress, constantly checking the application, and neurosis. I'm not saying this is necessarily you, but it's still mid-October, and there is a lot more time left this cycle.

I wish I still had this status! I'm at the 'reviewed and ranked...you ain't ****' status lol aka:

"Your Application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Applicants will be invited to interview based upon their point total from the Admissions Committee review. Applicants who have been reviewed and scored by the Admissions Committee may be notified that they have been selected for an interview between September and April."

Good luck to everyone!

Any news from anyone applying MD/MPH? Perhaps current students could comment on the dual degree program?

That's the status I had a couple of days before I received an II. And others had that status before receiving an II, if I'm not mistaken. I'm not sure if some people have had that status and not received an II though so don't take this as a confirmation that you're definitely getting an II but CHEER UP. Things are boding well for you 🙂

Just patiently waiting.

" a final decision has been made on your final, you should hear within 7 days by phone or email?"

AM I GOING TO HEAR TOMORROW?!

Thanks, B (your avi)!!!

I've been at that status for many moons. I'm hoping things will look up. Good luck at your interview; if you already had it, I hope it went well 🙂

Anyone think it's too early to send an update or a letter of interest if we have been reviewed/complete for a few months now?

"A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions ofice 305-243-3234 or [email protected] if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days."

I called them a few minutes ago, and I was told that I would receive an email at some point in between now and matriculation -.-

this is all post-interview btw.

Haha, great answer. Do you feel very relaxed now? 😀

I remember them saying they would be calling accepted students today around 5 pm.. Can anyone confirm this ?

charging my phone just in case👍

🙁 NO! Here I thought waiting till 5 pm was challenging enough!
I was, obviously, being sarcastic. Just think about how much endurance and patience this waiting will give you. 😀
