2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can any current students please comment on how they think the lack of a true pass/fail grading system has affected their experiences?

So to be accepted off the waitlist you have to wait for a committee meeting? They don't just accept the next person in line the day (or sometime soon thereafter) someone drops?

I think a lot of the 20 people accepted tomorrow will be off the alternate list.
Because there have only been a few interview dates between March 23rd's admission date and tomorrow's? I hope you're right - I'd rather be on the Yakuza's hit-list than the alternate list.

yes, i believe they only interviewed till the end of march. keep in mind that about 1-2 weeks of interviews prior to the march 23 date probably did not make the ballot for the march 23 release date so all that put together may or may not make up 20 accepted candidates. we'll see, especially since there have been people accepted off the alternate list in the last 2 admissions meetings.

To be accepted off the waitlist, you do not necessarily have to wait for a committee meeting.

But there is no order in the list is there? Or is it just the order of when your interview was/when you were wait listed? God I want to get into this school so bad but I don't know if many people would release their acceptance to such an awesome school 🙁

there is definitely an order on the alternate list cause they only accept the next 20 on the list. I think more people release their acceptance to UMiami than you think.

Are you guys sure there's an ad com meeting today? I interviewed some time in March and was notified of being on the alternate list like 2 days ago. Do you think they met last Friday or Monday instead?

it said on the hubspring website that "only offers of acceptances will be made on the following dates" and April 23 was one of them

What sort of order do you think there is? Is it perchance based on how long ago you were waitlisted or anything like that?

They probably have some sort of ranking I think based on evaluations of your app

Hmm, that'd make sense.

Less than an hour left. Trying really hard to not get my hopes up too much - but damn, this is excruciating.

I was accepted on a non committee meeting day

*edit: as far as I know, it wasn't

I'm a current first year, and I'd be more than willing to answer any specific questions you have! I could rant and rave forever, but it'd probably help if you gave me some direction lol

So, now that the last admission date has passed, how frequently do you all think candidates on the waitlist get a call?

US news data from last year said over 300 accepted. So far, 200 have been accepted. So I'm guessing at least 100 more will be accepted.

So does this mean the calls can come any day of the week now, and not just Wednesdays? that's even more excruciating 🙁

Emailed, but yeah I was on the alternate list first
Ah - nice! Congrats! Guess sitting beside my phone isn't the only option. Got to continually refresh my inbox, as well.

by the way, did no one here get a response on the 23rd of April? They did say it was one of their admission dates...

I spoke with someone in admissions and from what I understand, a decision was not made for some candidates on the 23rd. They told me a decision would be made very soon.

thanks for the info! Did s/he tell you if that only pertains to newly interviewed candidates, or those on the alternate-list as well?

I'm glad you asked this because I've been getting it a lot. And when I answer, you're probably not going to believe my response, but you should, because I have no reason to lie to you. Let me start by explaining our grading system for anyone who might be confused.

Every exam is graded individually, and you'll receive your grade (i.e. 95% on your first anatomy exam...fyi you're killllling it!). You then receive a percentage grade for the course (i.e. 80% in anatomy...fyi you didn't spend enough time studying the cadavers for head and neck, standard mistake). Your official transcript, which is sent to residency programs, will say you passed anatomy. It won't show your grade, it won't show the average, nothing. Just pass or fail. Where your grades tend to matter is in your dean's letter, which is also sent to residency's. The dean will distinguish AOA, and the rest of the class by quartiles. But it won't say "So and so was in the top 50% of the class." It's subtle, like "so and so was a phenomal/excellent/great/good student" based on your quartile. And your quartile is determined by your grades.

That being said, some people will truly strive for AOA. That's good for them. Other people (the VAST majority) simply don't care, and here's why. Regardless of your grading system, you will spend an extra ordinate amount of time studying in medical school--that's the reality of it. Nothing you will learn is "difficult" per say, but the volume of information that needs to be covered in four years makes it necessary for you to study pretty much all the time. And I don't think this varies amongst schools. Basically, it doesn't matter if you want to be in the top quarter or you're content in the bottom quarter, you're going to study the same amount, and it really comes down to differences in your background (are you a good memorizer? are you better with concepts? did you take neuroanatomy in undergrad?). Similarly, our averages are ridiculously high, because our tests aren't difficult if you've learned the material. So with a 94% average, a 93 essentially puts you below the average. Does that mean you studied any less than the person that got a 95? No of course not, so it's not worth killing yourself for.

My experience: at no point have I ever said "I need to be in the top quartile." I study hard because 1. I'm going to need to know this material for my boards, so I might as well learn it, and 2. I'm in medical school, this is my job--to study. I assure you it has NO impact on how classmates interact. Every day someone is posting a new study guide, video, or resource in our Facebook group. Group studying is the norm. People want to help each other. I've never felt more stressed because I knew that my grades were going to count. And I truly believe that I would study just as hard as I do now if I went to a true pass/fail school.

TL;DR: I don't think there is any difference between our grading system and a true pass fail. There are FAR more important factors to consider when choosing a school, this should not be the deciding factor (realistically, you should take this out of the equation all together, because I assure you it is NOT important). Good luck choosing!

Hey there people. UM alum and former adcom member here. In residency now. Happy to answer any questions.

How much does the waitlist typically move at UM from this point forward? Both for the MD and MD/MPH programs?

Hi, I confirmed with the admissions office that the waitlist is ranked. Do you know if we will be informed about where we are on the waitlist?

Thanks for your help!

I had called to find that out and they told me it was confidential 🙁

I can't give you exact numbers, but the wait list does move. Particularly before May 15th and then after that point there tends to be a lull. So, remain cautiously optimistic.

Has there been much, if any, movement of the wait list for the MD track thus far? Can anyone comment on this? Are March interviewees still waiting on decisions?

There has been movement on MD waitlist.

Withdrew my acceptance, couldn't justify the cost -- would have loved to live in Miami though. Good luck to everyone waiting!

Wow so already movement on the waitlist? I'm so nervous, I really really really hope to get that email and call soon, nothing means more to me than this. I interviewed in the beginning of February. Hope that doesn't mean they already reevaluated me 🙁

Thank you for giving those of us waiting a valuable opportunity to earn your seat, Tijou! Best of luck at whichever medical school you decide in attending!

Accepted 4/28!! Interviewed in February, was put on the waitlist in March. 3.8/33 UM undergrad
