2013-2014 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone else heard anything? I am OBSESSED with this school and would love to attend! 🙂

Accepted yesterday to MD/MPH. Interviewed all the way back in October. They e-mailed me in the morning and called/left a few voicemails afterwards. Very excited, definitely matriculating. Sent in a letter of intent last week, don't know if that helped or not.

Those of you who've been waiting for a long time like me, still plenty of hope. If I remember from Dean Weismann's presentation during our interview day correctly, ~100-130 acceptances go out to waitlisted people.

Hi, I confirmed with the admissions office that the waitlist is ranked. Do you know if we will be informed about where we are on the waitlist?

Thanks for your help!

Whoops. No, they won't tell you where you are ranked. Good luck!

Can someone invite me to Miami Miller School of Medicine facebook group? I am enrolled as an MD/MPH student and was going to look for a possible roommate on that page.

Message me your name and I'll add you!

Well I got an email response from the office after sending in an update a few days ago. They are/were out of the office until today.

Could you also add me? (I'll PM you my Facebook.) I just got a phone call today that I was accepted to the MD-MPH program off the alternate list. I interviewed way back in September and fell in love with UM, but since its been so long I didn't expect anything, when this phone call came out of the blue! Now I need to make a pretty quick decision since the MPH program starts in mid-June! Anyone have any strong opinions on UM's MD-MPH vs. Tufts' MD-MPH?

Strong opinion: Miami>>>>>>>>>Boston

Haha, could you elaborate? 🙂

Congrats! Phone or email? And just an hour or so ago?

Can someone explain how to send in the deposit? I remember it being explained in my acceptance letter, but I left that at school and I am home until past May 15th :X

Question regarding student body. As a nontraditional student, how many nontrads matriculate to UM on average? I have a feeling, comparatively, that the student body is 90% traditional? I'm very concerned about "fit" here, as I didn't feel there was much of a connection during Second Look with other students, as I've felt at other schools, but maybe that will change when school starts?

Question regarding the waitlist. What is the likelihood of getting off that waitlist given that I am an out-of state student? I interviewed in November. We were told that there is a lot of movement, however I am beginning to understand that the movement may be with Florida residents.

I don't know if you're in the accepted students group, but it appears that there are plenty of older, nontraditional students as well!

There are at least four accepted students in their 30s. A few in their 20s are non-trad, families, etc. (and I don't consider a gap year or two non-trad)
No matter what school you go to the bulk of students will be in their early to middle 20s. However, I'm sure you'll make connections with people no matter which school you attend.

Yea I felt the same way, I think the bulk is traditional students rather than non-traditional

This is true. I'd say the vast majority of our class is straight out of college or took 1-2 years off. There are definitely some non trade though, and how they choose to fit in depends a lot on their situation. The "married with children" don't tend to come out or go to any of our functions, but I'm sure they're fine with that. The "married without children" couples, however, do--and spouses are always welcome and usually come also. The "just a little older" students tend to fit right in. They still hangout with the younger students, maybe they don't go as hard at the bar, but they like find their friend circle no matter what.

I don't know your situation, but I really believe that if you put forth an effort (in contrast to how I described "married with children"), then I think you will certainly fit. HOWEVER, as much as I would love for you to attend UM because I think it's the most fantastic school ever, I would be a hypocrite to tell you anything other than this, which is my advice to every student deciding between schools: you will be happiest at the school where you DID feel that you "fit."

has a lot of the movement off of the alternate list happened or will it happen in the next few days ? or next week / not going to happen?

Accepted off the waitlist this morning!! SO happy and grateful to be attending this school!!

I was accepted off the waitlist at about 1 pm PST today via phone call. I didn't pick up so they left a message and I got an email a few minutes later.
OOS, interviewed on the last day 3/31

I wonder how many people actually release their acceptances today. Do you guys think a majority of students would have done so beforehand?

Does Miami respond to you guys when you send updates or LoI? I emailed them a few days ago abd never heard back to confirm they received it or anything

They replied after I sent my first update after my interview. Then when I sent in my LoI i had to follow up a week or so after and they replied. For my most recent update they still haven't replied but I will assume it has been added to my file
