2013-2014 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can we get back to discussing the University of Minnesota's 2013 app cycle and not have an argument between just a few people. This is getting tiring.

How about any OOSers who are with me, still waiting on a secondary? 🙁

Edit: Just got one this afternoon! Hope I get a gold star for <30min turnaround 😀

I just received an II at the Duluth Campus yesterday. I submitted on 8/1, verified 8/1. OOS sGPA 3.75 Mcat 32. No ties to the state except being partially native american. They are actually paying for my plane ticket, lodging and other travel expenses to interview at the Duluth campus and the Twin Cities campus.

Great to hear, congratulations on the interview and best of luck. Looks like I won't hear back for a few more weeks.

Did anyone who got their interview confirmed get any information about student hosting?

Literally confused by this question:

Have you considered alternate career options to fulfill your commitment to providing healthcare other than medicine? Please talk about what you might do if you are ultimately not accepted to medical school.

Do they really want us to talk specifically about the other healthcare-related careers we've considered outside of medicine? Because that doesn't leave a whole lot of options (RN, NP, PA if you don't view them as practicing medicine, per say, and maybe public health)...like I seriously considered getting a PhD, but that wasn't "to fulfill [my] commitment to providing healthcare."

I decided to write something that was true, even though it doesn't quite fit given the exact wording of the prompt. I have similarly had a strong research background and was considering a PhD alone before I decided to go to medical school. I talked about how I would pursue research but direct it towards clinical questions as opposed to the basic science I have been working on. My goal would be to provide healthcare by aiding physicians in developing better therapies and medical technology.

Hey guys, do you know if we can send different letters to the Duluth and TC campuses? I already submitted Duluth's but I tailored my letters more towards their mission.

Send, as in have AMCAS send specific letters? i do not think so. However, each secondary application you specify three letters that are to be included in your application. Hope this helps.

Also, anyone writing the secondary essays/going to interviews should check out the UMN medicine YouTube Channel. Lots of cool, helpful information!

On another note, my experience thus far with both of these schools has been wonderful. I am an OOS, with ~avg stats (32, 3.75sGPA) and they have really gone above and beyond any expectations I have had for any school. The staff in the admissions office is very friendly and helpful. As a CA resident I had never really heard much about this school and had no real expectations of actually obtaining an interview, however now it looks as though this is one of my top choices. I cannot wait to visit the campus. If this is how they treat you as an applicant, I wonder how they treat you as an enrolled student! 👍

Can anyone who currently attends University of Minnesota describe winters? As I said, I am from southern CA and literally have a summer type climate all year.

Best of luck to everyone!

It was great! Pretty generic, but great medical school! They don't want students to know who will be interviewing them lest they google them haha
Nice meeting the interviewing bunch yesterday!

How would you suggest people going to an interview prepare? (besides thoroughly reviewing primary/secondary app, researching school and reviewing one's publications). Are there any specific resources you used in preparing for the interview? Thank you.

Did anyone who got their interview confirmed get any information about student hosting?

Just wanted to bump this question. Wondering if I should just wait for another email with the information, contact the office to ask or find myself a hotel. My interview confirmation email did not say anything about student hosting.

The winters here have been really variable the last few years (I'm a U grad and current MS1). But overall, it's more cold than snowy here than say, the east coast. As other have pointed out, we have a wonderful tunnel system (the Gopher Way!). I can walk from our lecture hall to the anatomy and histology labs without ever stepping outside. It's awesome and sad at the same time.

Good luck with the application process!

Also the med school is pretty localized. Coffee shop, diner, lecture halls... All in the same area. Then there is all of stadium village right near by. Oh and parking garages available by tunnel. But as someone who came to undergrad here from far down south, the winters are manageable. You just need the right clothes haha!

i got into an in depth discussion about long underwear with the other applicants on my interview day. apparently it's a must have if you live there

Long underwear are a must. Cuddle duds are my fave.

How long did it take for y'all to get the secondary?

Do you guys think it's too late to submit the secondary today? For whatever reason, I fell through the cracks in U of M's application process. I e-mailed them a two ago, and they sent me a secondary yesterday. I feel like mid-September is getting kind of late. =/

I'm also wondering about the student hosting. Did anyone get any leads on that?
I'm interviewing next Friday..maybe I'll see someone from here!

Are you interviewing at TC or Duluth? I will be up at Duluth next Friday. Getting nervous/excited for the interview!

had a dream last night where i got an email from dean Patel saying that the quality of in state applicants was unusually high and that OOS interview invitations were rescinded, and also that if you're oos and already interviewed you'd be automatically waitlisted.

weird, huh?

Hey, looking for a bit of feedback from any of the perspective Duluth applicants.

I put in my secondary about a month ago, wondering how long turnaround has been for others who received interviews or were rejected.

Thanks

I'll be at the Twin Cities campus. Good luck on yours!
Have you booked a hotel, or did they tell you anything about student hosts?

Did anyone send in their primary and not hear back from them about a secondary? I got an email saying they received my primary and over the next few weeks they would send me the secondary. Silence since. I think that was about a month ago and I am about to email them and ask.

I just got their secondary Friday and my application was verified well over a month ago. And I'm in state.

Ahhhhhh ok- I am OOS too so I figured it would be a while- Thanks for the update- I will keep waiting!

I had a question about the secondary...there is a question "If you did not designate Minnesota as your state of legal residence on your AMCAS application, briefly describe any ties that you might have to this state. (1200 characters)" and it is required to write something. What did all you other in-staters do for this? Could I use this space to talk about all the family members who have attended the U and how I want to stay and practice medicine in MN, even though the question is geared towards OOSers?

I just wrote "Minnesota is my state of residence."

I am so excited and anxious now (post interview 9/9). MN is without a doubt my #1. I looked at the thread from last year and comparable interview dates heard back anywhere from 10/21-11/mid. Good luck to everyone who applied!

Feel free to message me to share in the anxiety!

The question isn't "geared" towards oos'ers, it explicitly qualifies the question for them. iirc there's another box to put in extra information if you feel so inclined, but if you're in-state they'll probably make the assumption that you want to stay and practice there anyway. If you get an interview, they will give you ample opportunity to explain that too.

good luck!

For those that have already interviewed, was there any sort of dinner/coffee social the evening before your interview day? I know there has been something like that in years past. Thanks!

No. I know 5 other people that have interviewed this year at UoM (I interviewed there last year as well and I know what you're talking about) and no one has had this. I think it's safe to say this has been discontinued.

That was the impression I was getting too. I wish they hadn't discontinued the social activity. I think it would be a fun way to get to know some of the students and to get out some of the nervousness of interviewing.

I agree, but I think it may have been scrapped due to lack of interest. When I went last year there were only 3 people in attendance including myself. I interviewed the next day with 20+ people. I'm sure there were days where no one took up the offer.

I have been invited to a dinner the night prior to my interview (9/18) at the Duluth Campus. I believe this has to do with being native american. I have not heard anything like this from the twin cities campus (interviewing 9/19).

That's so soon! Good luck later this week :luck:

I just received my II to the Twin Cities campus-- first one of the season! IS, traditional applicant, cGPA 3.65, MCAT 31. Complete 8/17. They were offering October 4th, October 14th and October 18th as dates.

I am also OOS, but with extremely strong ties to Minnesota and UMN. They received my primary a few weeks ago (submitted to AMCAS 7/2), so they must be inundated with applications. I haven't received a secondary, either. It makes me so nervous to check my inbox these days.

You must be nice 🙂

Just got a call for II at the Duluth campus!! Anyone know about how many applicants they interview? I am interested in knowing acceptance rates from interviews. I submitted to Duluth when my app was verified 8/13 for anyone interested. OOS but native american.

Just got secondary. Submitted app Aug. 8th or so. OOS, so takes time in some case. Good luck all.

So I need some opinions- for the "ties to the state" essay, I wrote something with a little bit of humor about the freezing cold in Minnesota and how my wife warned me about it. I am not from MN but she is. How do you think UMN would feel about a little humor? Yea or nay?

probably not worth risking the secondary fee over. Maybe use the fact that you've a wife, i.e. talk about how it would be a nice place to raise a family. Worked for me 🙂

Can anyone comment on the format of the interviews at the Twin Cities campus, number of interviews, timing etc?

I was just sent the schedule for my interview day, and it starts at 8 for a welcoming session, and then there are 2 interviews, 45 min each. Next is a faculty presentation, then lunch at 12:30 with some M2s, followed by a tour, and some talk on admissions. Then it says interaction with faculty through a panel or an activity. And then the day is done at 2:45.

First rejection 🙁

Secondary received 9/3, OOS, stats on MDApps

Hey, friend.
Do you mind to share more infor about your interview there? Did you interview at Duluth or Twin Cities?
What kind of questions did they ask?

The interview questions at Duluth were really laid back and seemed specific to my application. I don't know if there is any real way to prepare for their interview, other than being comfortable speaking about why you want to be a primary care doctor or practice in a rural setting. It is a really friendly and relaxed interview and the school typically only has two people each day.

I'm interviewing there 10/3, and I am super excited!! It sounds like a good setting. Do you know if they interview very few candidates overall? When I spoke to them on the phone I really felt like it was a very personal type of environment, and that made me even more excited to go there.
