Can we get back to discussing the University of Minnesota's 2013 app cycle and not have an argument between just a few people. This is getting tiring.

I just received an II at the Duluth Campus yesterday. I submitted on 8/1, verified 8/1. OOS sGPA 3.75 Mcat 32. No ties to the state except being partially native american. They are actually paying for my plane ticket, lodging and other travel expenses to interview at the Duluth campus and the Twin Cities campus.
Anyone else interviewing tomorrow?
I am. There will be 24 of us
Great. Looking forward to meeting you folks.
Literally confused by this question:
Have you considered alternate career options to fulfill your commitment to providing healthcare other than medicine? Please talk about what you might do if you are ultimately not accepted to medical school.
Do they really want us to talk specifically about the other healthcare-related careers we've considered outside of medicine? Because that doesn't leave a whole lot of options (RN, NP, PA if you don't view them as practicing medicine, per say, and maybe public health)...like I seriously considered getting a PhD, but that wasn't "to fulfill [my] commitment to providing healthcare."
Hey guys, do you know if we can send different letters to the Duluth and TC campuses? I already submitted Duluth's but I tailored my letters more towards their mission.
It was great! Pretty generic, but great medical school! They don't want students to know who will be interviewing them lest they google them haha
Nice meeting the interviewing bunch yesterday!
Did anyone who got their interview confirmed get any information about student hosting?
The winters here have been really variable the last few years (I'm a U grad and current MS1). But overall, it's more cold than snowy here than say, the east coast. As other have pointed out, we have a wonderful tunnel system (the Gopher Way!). I can walk from our lecture hall to the anatomy and histology labs without ever stepping outside. It's awesome and sad at the same time.
Good luck with the application process!
Are you interviewing at TC or Duluth? I will be up at Duluth next Friday. Getting nervous/excited for the interview!I'm also wondering about the student hosting. Did anyone get any leads on that?
I'm interviewing next Friday..maybe I'll see someone from here!
I'll be at the Twin Cities campus. Good luck on yours! Are you interviewing at TC or Duluth? I will be up at Duluth next Friday. Getting nervous/excited for the interview!
Did anyone send in their primary and not hear back from them about a secondary? I got an email saying they received my primary and over the next few weeks they would send me the secondary. Silence since. I think that was about a month ago and I am about to email them and ask.
I just got their secondary Friday and my application was verified well over a month ago. And I'm in state.
I am so excited and anxious now (post interview 9/9). MN is without a doubt my #1. I looked at the thread from last year and comparable interview dates heard back anywhere from 10/21-11/mid. Good luck to everyone who applied!
Feel free to message me to share in the anxiety!
I had a question about the secondary...there is a question "If you did not designate Minnesota as your state of legal residence on your AMCAS application, briefly describe any ties that you might have to this state. (1200 characters)" and it is required to write something. What did all you other in-staters do for this? Could I use this space to talk about all the family members who have attended the U and how I want to stay and practice medicine in MN, even though the question is geared towards OOSers?
For those that have already interviewed, was there any sort of dinner/coffee social the evening before your interview day? I know there has been something like that in years past. Thanks!
No. I know 5 other people that have interviewed this year at UoM (I interviewed there last year as well and I know what you're talking about) and no one has had this. I think it's safe to say this has been discontinued.
That was the impression I was getting too. I wish they hadn't discontinued the social activity. I think it would be a fun way to get to know some of the students and to get out some of the nervousness of interviewing.

I have been invited to a dinner the night prior to my interview (9/18) at the Duluth Campus. I believe this has to do with being native american. I have not heard anything like this from the twin cities campus (interviewing 9/19).
Ahhhhhh ok- I am OOS too so I figured it would be a while- Thanks for the update- I will keep waiting!
I just received my II to the Twin Cities campus-- first one of the season! IS, traditional applicant, cGPA 3.65, MCAT 31. Complete 8/17. They were offering October 4th, October 14th and October 18th as dates.
So I need some opinions- for the "ties to the state" essay, I wrote something with a little bit of humor about the freezing cold in Minnesota and how my wife warned me about it. I am not from MN but she is. How do you think UMN would feel about a little humor? Yea or nay?

The interview questions at Duluth were really laid back and seemed specific to my application. I don't know if there is any real way to prepare for their interview, other than being comfortable speaking about why you want to be a primary care doctor or practice in a rural setting. It is a really friendly and relaxed interview and the school typically only has two people each day.
