2013-2014 University of Minnesota Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They said usually they interview around 120-140 people a year for their class of 60, but last year they received "way more" applications than usual and invited around 180-190 to interview. So depending on how many acceptances they hand out (no idea, if anyone has a clue I would love to know) you have a 1/3 chance on interview day, give or take. I have no idea how being an OOS NA will affect your chances. Good luck though.

The interview and campus is quite intimate and friendly. I am sure you will have a blast on interview day. Relax and have fun.

Thanks for the information!! 🙂 I'm really looking forward to it!

This is my Undergrad and I still haven't received the secondary. Grrrr.

Finally got mine. I was complete (from my perspective) 9/11 and I believe I added Minnesota on AMCAS around 8/25

Has anyone who has been invited for an interview for the October 4, 13, 18 dates not heard back to confirm our selections or with an itinerary?

II! Duluth campus, I'm very excited to check it out! I was complete August 5th

Fairly sure my file has been complete for more than three weeks, but haven't heard anything yet, and I'm worried that the admissions office maybe didn't get my committee LoR.

For those of you who have gotten IIs, when you log in to the status page, is there a place where it says they've received your LoRs? At the top of the page, I have a green check mark next to "Fee Status" and "Application Status", but there's no box for LoRs, period, and I'm not sure if there should be. When I review my submitted application, the LoRs page says my status is "Letter Received". So I'm probably just being neurotic, but I wanted to double check.

IS, btw.

hey im international too! mind sharing your stats? Any affiliation to Minnesota? Im just wondering whether they have high standards for international applicants

Hey, friend.
Do you mind to share more infor about your interview there? Did you interview at Duluth or Twin Cities?
What kind of questions did they ask?

I interviewed at TC. I put the Q's they asked in the Q bank on this site (under Articles & Interviews at the top, Interview Feedback).

Nothing out of the ordinary. Very laid back and friendly; just what you'd expect from MN! 🙂

Recently interviewed at the TC campus. The new dean is great and does an awesome job of helping ease the interview day jitters. Overall enjoyable day

When asked the dean said that they will likely be interviewing between 550 to 600 people this year and extending offers to between 240-270 of them for the class of 170. She also noted that they are planning on offering twenty acceptances on 10/15.

Good luck everybody!

Thanks for this info. I figured they had around a 50% yield. I take it you mean 10/15?

20 seems like a low number, even with that yield. I know they interviewed around 25 people in August and the first admissions meeting was September 15, so I suppose maybe? Thinking about it's making me nervous. I don't know why, considering I'm oos, but gosh I'd like to go there.

October 1st was the deadline for early decision process and thankfully.... I got the call today!

Figured I'd stop from lurking and ofter my help or advice to others still going through the process. As others have said, the U of MN is very friendly and Dimple Patel (and others) have done a great job improving the overall feel when interviewing at TC. I really believe this will have an effect on the incoming class and I'm definitely excited to be a part of it.

If you have any questions to ask about the process, fire away! Wish everyone the best of luck!

I agree 20 seems really low. The adcoms started meeting on 9/11 and they meet every other Wednesday they said.

I don't know, that is what Patel said on the 9/30 interview day. She also noted that it was the 8th interview day and each day had between 18-25 people present. Who knows how quickly they can discuss candidates.

That's not quite true. I had a relatively early date which had a few less than that. Maybe it was like a "test run" interview day?

Just to contribute to the ongoing data as I know a lot of people are interested and worried about timelines.

Just got my Interview Invite for Twin Cities campus today (Oct. 2), I had finished my supplemental app 8/26.

Was rejected from Duluth campus back on 9/17 and I had finished that supplemental app on 8/20... I guess they saw right through my willingness to work in rural medicine haha

4.0 GPA, 31 MCAT, In state applicant - grew up in MN but doing undergrad out of state.

Edit: for those interested, the dates they offered me were Oct 21, 25, or 28

I received my confirmation the next day, complete with an itinerary.

I just finished my interview at Duluth, and it was great! Everyone was super friendly and easy to talk to. I was worried when I saw that you do two 1 hour interviews, but I felt relaxed. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I enjoyed the entire experience! 🙂

IS interviewed 9/9, 3.9, 36, waitlisted today. :/

I loooove the school. I'm sad.

Wow, you have great stats, sorry to hear about the WL 🙁 I'm OOS 4.0, 35, interviewed on 9/6 and was WL today as well, though I wasn't very confident about getting an acceptance since I'm OOS. Wishing you the best though, hopefully you'll be up at the top of that list! 🙂

It's nice to hear someone else is in my boat. I suppose WL is better than rejection! I'll keep hoping, and I wish you all the best luck as well.

Let's just hope the WL moves more than last year. Can you imagine? They got to what? #6? Ugh.

They send out wait-lists prior to 10/15?!?! Sorry about your news, good luck with the waitlist! Hopefully there is more movement than 6 this year. Also, did you call them and ask what you could improve on this year?

Separately, did you feel really well after your interview? Did your interviewers say things like "you would be a great student here" or anything along those lines? I interviewed here just over a week ago and the interviewers said these things, but I have a hard time believing they don't say that to everyone.

As I understood it from last year, they will not help you with your app until you do not matriculate.

I felt okay about the interview. They didn't say anything like that to me. I'd be happy aboutmy cchances were I you. Good luck!

Sorry guys, hopefully you get some good news later in the cycle... can you tell me if it was by email? I don't think they've a place to check status online, right?

It was by email, yes. I think updates will be via a hotline starting may 15. (could be totally wrong)

Hey the last email I received from the school was that my secondary has been paid and that was more than 1 week ago and I still havent recieved any "complete" email. Does the school send "complete" emails or is the paid fee that last email they send and we can assume our application is complete?

Can anyone post the Duluth secondary questions please. I don't see them posted on the forums.

Has anyone been wait-listed at Duluth? Almost three weeks post interview and I am hoping for an acceptance call next Tuesday, but I realize that is a little early for me to hear back. Does anyone know if they send out letters or do an email like the TC campus? Each day collecting the mail is one mini panic attack worrying that I may see a U of MN letterhead...

How is everyone else holding up? First batch of acceptances go out in exactly one week. Best of luck all!

Applied to tc only, so I can't help you with your first question. How I'm holding up, not sure. Taking each day as it comes, thinking no news ahead of the 15th is good news. I'm pretty sure my mid-late August interview date was among their first, and people who interviewed in September have been waitlisted. Cautiously optimistic, but I'm oos with zero or very weak ties and consider myself lucky to have even been interviewed. Hoping for the best, you know? Good luck to you as well 🙂

For Duluth, first batch of acceptance goes out in November. They are NOT reluctant to reject. No news is good news.
That's what I heard and what I understood. Don't quote me on this.

Did they tell you that when you interviewed? Have never heard the November thing. I am fairly certain Susan (the lady in charge of the admissions office) said that the first acceptances go out on 10/15, but I could be wrong.

And when you say they are not reluctant to reject, are you talking about before or after the interview? I am pretty sure their acceptance rate is between 50-60% post interview.

When I interviewed, she explained that it is usually 4-6 weeks after the interview that the decision is made. If it is acceptance, you get a happy phone call from Susan. Then you get an email and an actual letter. Rejections are done via email. 🙂

Maybe we'll both get in! Good luck! :luck:

Are you american indian?

Does this mean all waitlists/rejections will be sent out on Fridays? The two people from last week were waitlisted on Friday and now you. Has anyone been waitlisted on a day other than Friday?

Average MCAT for our class (class of 2017) was 33.6, highest average ever for the U I believe.

I suppose that's true! I did some quick math and that number actually seems reasonable for the amount of 33+ MCATs based on 2012 figures.

A discovery was made today: medical school is competitive to get into. 🙄

Hey do you mind posting the link, I cant seem to find how to access the "Q bank" for the interview questions. Thanks!

what day did you interview? I interviewed at Duluth on 9/19 and TC on 9/20. I think they said we would hear via a phone call (at both campuses). I have not yet been put on a WL so it may be possible to hear back tomorrow? However, this is all speculation.

Has anyone that interviewed at the TC campus on 9/20 been put on the WL?
Goodluck everyone.
