Do you have limited Interview availability for the 2014-2015 admissions cycle? (500 Characters)

Summarize your activities during the 2014-2015 academic year. Describe how your activities are preparing you for a medical career. (2000 Characters)

How will your unique attributes (e.g., cultural or socioeconomic background, lifestyle, work experiences) add to the overall diversity of the Alpert Medical School community? (2000 Characters)

What are your aspirations for your medical practice? Fast-forward to 15 years in the future: where do you imagine yourself? (3000 char)

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

This school looks amazing. I've seen a lot of different MCAT and GPA averages though (nothing too consistent). Does anyone know what they REALLY are?

Same as above. Came here to get more info on this school.

Most matriculants are apparent BS/MD. Is this true?

Is it worth applying here?

Applied last Tuesday, verified today. Now, we wait....

I like their selection criteria -- seems as if they really dig ECs and finding an appropriate fit for the school. Definitely a top choice. Good luck, everyone! 😀

Brown is one of my top choices. I almost applied PLME when I was an undergrad, because I firmly believe in their mission of an art background being a beneficial attribute for medicine. I hope I get the chance to join the class for med school, even though I missed out on the BS/MD opportunity! 🙂

This is my concern too...Can someone (maybe current students) please clarify?

from what I remember as a HS senior considering PLME, I don't think they take up the majority of the seats but yes there are seats reserved for them!

From the Brown website - class of 2017 consists of ~120 students: "Sixty-three students applied through the AMCAS route of admission, which is the largest cohort in the class. Forty-five students were enrolled as undergraduates in the Program in Liberal Medical Education. Ten members of the class entered through Postbaccalaureate Linkage Programs at Bryn Mawr College, Goucher College, and Columbia. Two members of the class were selected through the Early Identification Program, a brother-and-sister duo from Tougaloo College."

So 57 spots of the 120 are already allocated. So 7,949 applications, competing for 63 spots? Are the BS/MD applicants interviewed as well? Another thing, are the BS/MD matriculants required to take MCAT?

I heard they like unique applicants.
I think I'm a unique applicant ...

Hopefully those 10% accepted numbers aren't the PLME kids.

Imagine that you are approached by a multibillionaire philanthropist who wants to donate a substantial fund of money to a single project with the goal of "fixing the US healthcare system." He/she asks for your expert opinion on what project this money should go towards; what would you advise and why? (2000 Characters)

Often when we talk about medicine, we focus on the individual physician-patient relationship. Why should medical schools train future physicians to care for communities and populations as a whole, and not just individual patients? (2000 Characters)

^ Those last 2 prompts are for the MD-ScM program. The 3rd prompt for regular MD is the same as last year:
What are your aspirations for your medical practice? Fast-forward to 15 years in the future: where do you imagine yourself? (3000 char)

Speaking of which, what does anyone know about that program? I'm interested in primary care so I'm definitely intrigued, but I don't know enough about policy to properly answer the first question 🙁

Ah yes, that is correct. I didn't notice they changed when I selected that program.

While there are tons of great books on this (go to amazon or even a local library!) if you are short on time and want to learn more, look around the internet and read multiple sources on how the healthcare system functions and then decide what you think is inefficient or should be changed.

Also, browns website gives a great breakdown. I love polictics and plan on incorporating that into my career as a PCP, so I was also really interested in this as an alternative to the MD/MPH

Does anyone know if you get rejected from the MD-ScM program, that you are still considered for the MD program?

Of the matriculating class, how many students are part of the MD-ScM program??

Also does brown screen for secondaries?

Secondary received and submitted!

@dr.0ne it says on their website: "All applicants who designate “Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University” as a receiving school on the AMCAS application will receive electronic mail instructions for the online secondary application."

Brown has an amazing match list and the students talking about their rotations said they are amazing compared to their friends at other New England programs. Definitely a top choice school!

How much did you all write for the last question? I am spending more time thinking about what to write than actual writing.

Wrote about 2000 characters until it felt natural to stop. I had written about a career goal in my PS, so I used the last question to elaborate.

Oh man. Just finished the secondaries. I spent around 10 hours writing these essays. Brown is such a good school and I really want to go there. It's sad to think that all of this work may be for nothing. 🙁

Don't think like that, instead be excited that all your hard work may pay off!

I feel really dumb asking this, but does semester hours mean credit hours?

Also: if I go to a school that is on the quarter system I should use a conversion like this to convert quarter credits to semester hours?

Edit: I am silly and don't know what I am talking about.

does showing an interest in doing this program increase my chances of getting in here?

anyone know how many md students that matriculate here get involved in this program??

@Temerit Generally, the conversion is 3 Quarters = 2 Semesters. So in other words, take your number of quarters, and multiply by~0.7.

plz correct me if im wrong, dont want to spread misinformation.

if brown is a semester system which i think it is, then for quarter students you need to be dividing by 1.5, not multiplying by .7

it makes sense that a 4 unit quarter class is 2.7 semester hours. (4/1.5=~2.7)

If we took, say, more than just the one required course of calculus, are you guys listing all the calculus courses you took? Or just one to fill the requirements?

I'm also confused/curious about the quarter vs. semester thing too, as my undergrad was on the quarter system

Psssst dividing by 1.5 is the same as multiplying by 2/3 which is ~ .7 just like the person you corrected said.

Also doesn't your verified amcas convert to semester hours for you making all this moot?

Touché, you're right, it's listed right on the AMCAS application post-verification.

Same thing isn't it? Yes, I rounded up (0.67--> 0.7)

Edit: Lol, just saw that this was already discussed.

the earliest II's are sent the first week of August right? thats what I see from past years

Do we only get secondaries once our primary is verified? (As opposed to Ready for Review...)

In any case, thank you for posting the prompts! I suppose by whenever my primary is verified, I will be able to have the secondary essays finished.

More info about the MD-ScM Program is on the Brown website:

From what I understand, the 24 students that will be admitted into the MD-ScM program are in addition the 120 MD students, for a total of 144 students for the class of 2019. I've also heard that the number of students entering through the PLME route will be slightly reduced, so a total of 90-100 students will be admitted through AMCAS this coming cycle. Good luck, everybody!

I asked, and the MD-ScM acceptances are not through a separate admissions pool - you get admitted regularly, and then in March they decide who to admit to this program. Based on this I cannot rule out that it's 144 total, but I would guess it's 120

Just got an email saying I'm complete. Would love to get an interview here. I really think this school is one of my top choices.

Hmmm, so I'm not sure if it's for this year or for future cycles, but I believe the goal is 144 at some point -- last fall, I overheard the director of the anatomy course musing about whether it would be better to add an additional student to each cadaver, or try to fit more cadavers into each lab to account for the new program.

I just visited Brown medical school while in Providence. LOL don't believe the pics you see online, it is by far the ugliest medical school building I have seen, in a really run down part of the city. Check it out on google street view if you don't believe me. Sucks because Brown's UG campus across the river is beautiful.

For the supplemental info you can send to the email listed, do you think they would accept videos? A friend of mine included a video of her dancing at a performance in one of her applications and was wondering if it might be allowed to do the same here. Or are the more so instead asking for additional essays, like a biggest challenge type response? Thank you!

Completed email. Really wanna know when first II are out.

Not looking forward to dealing with missing class to make the trip though! (OOS)

Tell me about it! I live on the opposite coast from the vast majority of schools, and while I would love to get a bunch of invites, I'm worried about cost and time! It'll totally all be worth it in the end and I would be so honoured to get invites (def not complaining, don't get me wrong!), but it is certainly trickier to manage interview season when you are a 10 hour one way flight from most schools.
