2014-2015 Central Michigan University Application Thread

One of the questions on the secondary asks "what is the most meaningful opportunity in the future as a physician." What do they mean by opportunity? Is this something that you plan on doing, or something that will come up as a physician? Any thoughts guys?

I just talked about what my dreams as a doctor are.

Does anyone have any tips for the Mission Statement section? This is the one question that is leaving me stumped.

Mine was like 1 or 2 sentences about my goals and my desire to stay in Michigan to serve the people of my home state.

Last year's II first went out on 8/19. Looks like we still got a couple of weeks

Did you guys leave question 5 blank if you didn't have anything significant to add?

I don't remember the question exactly, but I did not leave any questions blank. Think of it as a "pre-interview" interview. Take it as an opportunity to talk more and let them get to know you better.

Question 5 was: 5. Please provide any additional information that you wish the CMED admissions committee to consider. (i.e., novel experiences, extenuating circumstances, alternate life paths, etc.) (maximum of 250 words)

I don't think that I have anything else significant to add that isn't mentioned somewhere else in the application

Oh for that question I simply talked about my inspiration to pursue medicine.

Any of y'all check your status recently?

My "Document Status" has my 5 letters received...but under "names" it is blank. And it's missing one of the e-mails. But there are 5 letters received. Is this just a glitch?

Congrats!! when were you guys complete? any OOS IIs? I was complete 7/4

I was complete on 7/28 (LizzyM > 70), didn't hear anything today. I took more than 3 weeks to complete the secondary but I was in Europe for vacation, do you think it is a big issue that it wasn't complete in two weeks? Should I call and explain why it took so long?

Received my interview invite yesterday morning!! OOS from Alaska. I scheduled for October 10! Hope to see some of you there soon!!

anyone mind explaining what lizzy M means lol

Does anyone here have the slightest inkling of what the post-interview acceptance rate is like? I have a significantly higher MCAT than the average here (I think avg. here is 24).
Also, does CMU equip you to work in rural areas primarily? It trains you for inner-city too, right?

The average is 28, and they focus mostly on rural areas since their mission is to promote doctors for central to northern michigan, which doesn't really have any inner city areas.

Thanks; I thought they did promote working in Detroit/Flint area though.

Hmm, I'm not sure about Detroit and Flint for their medical program since it specifically states central and northern in their medical schools mission statement. Also, I know those areas are pretty dominated by MSU and Wayne (I've lived and worked in both places and seen signs for their schools everywhere). During undergrad at cmich I saw many programs that do outreach there, so maybe the medical school will expand to those areas.

I do know that next year the medical students will move to Saginaw to begin their clinical years. That will definitely have some inner city exposure, and I'm sure it's something you can talk to them about!! 🙂

First II today! I am super excited! Canadian here... already had two rejections so this is a relief to at least be getting one interview this cycle.

edit - Forgot to post stats and such. Complete on 8/1 and LizzyM >70.

Oooh I'm jelly. We have nearly identical stats

Nothing here either... I interviewed here last cycle in February as an OOS applicant. I've since been able to switch my residency to Michigan and I've applied again. Hoping to hear something soon! 3.55 cGPA, 3.7 sGPA, 4.0 Master's GPA, 28MCAT

Do they screen for secondaries? If you received a secondary, is it a good sign?

MSAR tells me they screen applicants, but I don't know what they screen for. Also, about 20% (223/1113) of IS candidates who completed the app received an interview, and 5% (67/1429) of OOS candidates get interviewed.

Did anyone interview here last Friday, and if so, what was it like/how did you prepare?

Just interviewed recently (for anonymity's sake, there's only like 20ish people per interview group). It's REALLY nice. People are great. Facilities are brand-spanking new. Mt. Pleasant is a nice town. The people there are super open and simply fantastic. MMIs were surprisingly laid back, and the interviewers were great. I went in a bit stressed out, but after interacting with some fellow interviewees and some students, I felt pretty good about being there. I really enjoyed their MMI format as well, and yeah, overall really solid day!

For preparation, I just read through CMED's website. Their core competencies are pretty important and relevant, as well as their mission statement. Just remember to draw on your own personal experiences, answer the prompt, and smile =D
Y'all will love it here!

Any tips, my interview is approaching. How is the drive from Detroit to the school?

The drive is ~2.5 hours from DTW Airport, longer from the city itself. Traffic will be bad around the city, but most of the way there should be fine.
