The Georgetown University School of Medicine strives to ensure that its students become respectful physicians who embrace all dimensions of caring for the whole person. Please describe how your personal characteristics or life experiences will contribute to the Georgetown University School of Medicine community and bring educational benefits to our student body. (1000 characters)

Why have you chosen to apply to the Georgetown University School of Medicine, and how do you think your education at Georgetown will prepare you to become a physician for the future? * Please note: Essays should not exceed one single-spaced page at 12 point font (c. 5,000 characters).

Is there any further information that you would like the Committee on Admissions to be aware of when reviewing your file that you were not able to notate in another section of this or the AMCAS Application? (1000 characters)

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

i also am applying to georgetown, despite the disapproval i will surely get from jalby 😉 i really like how much georgetown emphasizes treating the whole person, while still offering a lot of focused research opportunities. i'm a bit curious about the prominence of the jesuit faith into the med school -- any current students have input about that?

I'm not a student but being a Jesuit school just means that it is Catholic school run by the Jesuit order of priests who strongly emphasize service and education (so it's not its own branch of Christianity). When I interviewed they said they will teach you about every aspect of medicine even those not condoned by the Catholic Church (abortion, contraception, etc). I got the impression that it influenced their values and mission but they wouldn't force anything on you if you weren't catholic. Hope that helps!

Very helpful!! Thank you 🙂

Applying here, top choice for me! Anybody know what aspects they value highly, besides what Brono posted?

I added this school to my AMCAS list and submitted it with my primary without looking at their mission because it is located close to home for me. Seeing their secondary app price dropped my interest in applying by 10%. After reading about their mission statement, my interest dropped another 30%. Their secondary question made it drop another 20%. Then i read their application handbook and how they view alcohol-related institutional actions. you guys now have 1 less applicant out of like 1,000,000,000 premeds to compete with. (not really but this school gets so much love!)

that being said, Goodluck to the rest of you who are applying!

What was it about their mission statement that was so discouraging, if you don't mind?

And how exactly do they view alcohol-related institutional action?

I am not religious at all. However I am not atheist, and I do not judge anyone based on their beliefs. And I realize the values behind their mission statement are not religious at all. However by using a phrase typically associated with a certain religion, it implies a strong religious affiliation - which is right if you look around the website. I just don't want religion following me into school - which is the exact same reason I turned down a half tuition scholarship to a local respected catholic university for a lower ranked state school where I got no money.

The Committee on Admissions takes seriously criminal convictions (felonies/misdemeanors) and institutional actions, especially those involving alcohol, drugs, and plagiarism.

I had an alcohol institutional action where I paid like 100$ and went to a 1 hour class because they found an unopened bottle of beer on top of my apartments fridge. Kinda weak.....

Anyway its just not a good fit for me. Goodluck for all those applying!

Makes sense. I'm atheist and dislike when religion is forced down my throat, but I hear that Georgetown is pretty lax compared to other religious schools. Look at Loma Linda for example. lol

truth.

I'm glad this is being discussed. I typically have an aversion to religious associations, but I really do respect the idea of cura personalis.

I'm on the same boat man, RAs found bottles in my friends dorm and since I was in the room I got cited, 100$ ticket and 1 hour class... complete bs. I'll be pissed if it interferes with me getting in anywhere

Applying here! Definitely really excited about Georgetown. The school is beautiful and the mission of the med school is admirable.

hey anyone know if they prescreen secondaries?

also looking at the previous secondary, the why our school prompt is kind of daunting. 5,000 characters? does anyone know if that includes spaces or not?

Most forms includes spaces iirc. And I don't think you have to use 5,000 characters haha. If you have a good understanding of what Georgetown values in medical education (cura personalis) and why that would be useful or better when actually practicing medicine, I think you should be alright.

Hey guys, the secondary says 5000 characters, but then it says not to surpass 1 page with 12 point font... Should I keep the secondary to one page to keep it safe?

Would not being Catholic/Christian affect my admissions chance does anyone think? As a Muslim on my AMCAS it says affiliation with a Muslim organization and I was wondering if my chances at Georgetown would automatically go down tons? I already submitted my primary there, but I didn't notice how much before of an emphasis I see on the word "Catholic" and "Jesuit" in regards to Georgetown on SDN interviewee experiences. I'm thinking it might not be worth doing the secondary if this is the case. Thank you.

There is a Muslim prayer room on campus, so you're fine.

I am about to start their SMP and I am really counting on staying for the med school!!!!

You already got a secondary?!

Just finished second year at Gtown and finished boards so I have some time to answer questions.

In terms of religious affiliation I am not religious at all (nor catholic) and I feel that catholicism isn't really emphasized in the curriculum or effects you on a day to day basis.

Things which I think are fairly unique about Georgetown include
1) Health justice scholars program: Opportunity to talk with representatives of congress about health care issues and legislature
2) Hoya clinic: Student run clinic with a really diverse patient population
3) Cura personalis and service to the community: Our first year we ran a mini-medical school for elementary students in southeast DC
4) We have a fair number of MD's (rather than PHDs) teach lectures which made it really easy to ask after class about research opportunities or scrubbing in on surgeries.
5) Dr. Suarez - Absolutely amazing anatomy professor and you will know anatomy extremely well by the end of your first year.

Finally, looking back at the first two years I think that the pre-clinical training was terrific. Georgetown being a H/HP/P/LP/F curriculum does make the pre-clinical years more intense (talking to friends at other schools). However, in terms of preparedness for boards, I would say that they do a great job and more importantly I think I have a good knowledge base heading into clinical years.

Let me know if you have any specific questions I can try to answer.

Believe me, the religious aspect at Georgetown is there if you want it, it's not in your face by any means. The Jesuit values foster values in support of education and service. I am not Catholic, I just graduated from Georgetown in May and actually did research with a professor who got IRB approval for experiments relating to the effects of oral contraceptives on estrogen levels. Two girls I lived with were Muslim and Jewish, they both could not have asked for a better college experience. I was in the nursing and health studies school, I never felt that religion infiltrating or hindered my experience as a pre-med student or human science major and of my friends who are currently enrolled in the medical school never gave that impression either.

Can someone please post the essay prompts/character limits for the secondary? I'm sure everyone would appreciate it! Thank you in advance

Is it possible to get an interview invite if you have less than a 10 but greater than a 7 in two MCAT sections?

Just wanted to let others know that I received the secondary earlier today... e-mail says there is no screening involved, so everyone should get one soon.

So there are no fields in front of "Last Name*" and "First Name*" and you can't submit the secondary without putting your name in!!! 😕

Anyone else having the same issue?!

tried to ask for help, but I couldn't find a phone # or email address on their web😕

I have 3.3 sgpa and cgpa. Should I even bother to submit my secondary?

Secondary this morning as well!

I'm having issues with the optional "did your family member go here" section. It won't let me submit without a graduation year... but I don't have any family members that went to Georgetown

I just saw this on the Georgetown guide and emailed them about it; does anyone else know of other schools that have such a requirement too? I think by the time I'd be able to get such transcripts it would be 6 weeks…

For purposes of review, the Committee on Admissions requires that official transcripts be submitted directly to the school only for academic work completed at foreign institutions not verified by AMCAS. Transcripts are not required for foreign study undertaken through US or Canadian institutions (such as semester abroad programs) for which grades are recorded by the student’s home institution and verified by AMCAS.

Any chance you guys could post the secondary questions?

idk, this place's logic about applicants is fuzzy at best. i asked them before if you get prescreened out for being a similar situation and they said no, but who knows. if you look at their guide they make some generalizations about people based off of mcat score ranges. In their email online they say "The Committee on Admissions carefully reviews all completed applications. At the same time, it must establish academic criteria to reduce the volume of seriously considered applications to a manageable number," so you have to wonder if their careful review just involves looking at mcat scores and gpa and carefully rejecting most of those with less than the aforementioned criteria, while holistically review those that match the criteria.

They mentioned in their guide that a "highly competitive" applicant should have 200-400 clinical hours, especially with underserved community, at least 10 in each MCAT section, and at least 3.6 BCPM GPA. Considering last year they had >10k application, 6k completed, 1.2k invited for interview for a class of 196, I would say the numbers will apply to most applicants regardless of the holistic approach.

I received an email from them this morning with my PIN, but just received the same exact email with a different PIN. Did this happen to anyone else? Which PIN should I use?
