2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Applying OOS, my friend who interviewed here raved about it, apparently you get clinical contact super super early and there is a lot of financial aid available.

Seems like a very small school and I'm curious what kind of students they are looking for given the low acceptance rate.

This is one of my top choices. Applying OOS. Good luck everyone!

I believe the small school and low acceptance rate has to do with this being a fairly new medical program. I read something about them not being allowed to over accept because they are new, but I didn't really look into that.

I'm applying here this cycle. I'm really excited about this school! Are there any current medical students willing to dish out some secondary/interview advice?

Applying as well. Hopefully we get a current med student in here to answer some questions.

Fun fact, received tonight:

Dear {insert name here}...,

"...Applicants who possess the following will be invited to complete a supplemental application via email:
  • A composite MCAT score of at least 25,
taken within the past three years
  • An overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0
Non-traditional applicants who do not meet the MCAT and GPA requirements but who have extraordinary undergraduate or post-graduate experience, especially in a scientific and/or clinical setting, may request a supplemental application...

...We will NOT send a supplemental application until your MCAT scores are received by AMCAS.

If you earned an MCAT score of 25 or higher and minimum 3.0 CUM undergrad GPA, you will be sent a supplemental application automatically. Please do not request one..."

Where did you get this? I am a female URM and in-state, 2.9 undergrad and a 28 MCAT but am doing an SMP this year, very extensive research experience. My older sister also went here for undergrad and my mom is from the area. Is anyone else in a similar situation thinking about requesting or not requesting a secondary?

It was an email sent from the school last night. 🙂

Agreed. Not to be mean but it just makes it feel like they want your money than reject you after you submit the secondary

True, but isn't this kind of a self-screen? I mean if you don't have extenuating circumstances/extraordinary experiences AND you don't fall into the categories described above, you would be requesting a secondary at your own risk - sort of. One argument against screening would be that unique applicants who don't necessarily fit the usual academic profile, get the opportunity to tell their story.

I do agree that it does feel like a money making business, but maybe once we're on the other side, we can work toward changing that.

Yeah but I feel like most of the people with good stories and bad stats really only go so far as the maybe pile unless the school has a very high stat class for some reason.

That's probably true, but the hope is that out of those maybes will come a yes lol. It sucks, but there's not much we can do... :/

In other news, sec received this morning. 🙂 Haven't looked at it yet though...

So question 3 is a diversity question or a why us question?

How are people dressing in their photos? Ladies, what does your make up look like?

can someone who currently attends Hofstra comment on highlights of the curriculum and expand on the early clinical exposure some people have mentioned on this post???
Thanks in advance!!!

For question 2, are we supposed to talk about what we are going to do during the application year/gap year? It's worded differently from other schools that ask about your gap year so I wasn't sure.

yup! they just want to know what you've been doing since graduation.

Actually, you're absolutely right. Lol

Well I just graduated in June, so do you think they want to know about what I'm doing for the entire 2014-2015 app cycle? I guess I could call and ask but was wondering what others thought of this question

For the "interrupted education" question...does anyone know if they're only referring to an interruption in your regular undergrad? I'm a nontrad, so I went straight through 4 years of undergrad, graduated, then went back to do a post-bacc a couple years later - does that count as interrupted? I kind of read this one as a place to explain why you might have taken a leave of absence or something during undergrad, but was curious what others thought.

Makeup = subtle. I put on my interview suit (just go with something professional if you don't have that yet - maybe a nice shirt and a blazer), did my hair and makeup just like I would for an interview, then had a friend take the picture against a white wall. From what I've heard, the key here is to keep in professional - no outrageous makeup, no distractions in the background, etc. I went with your basic headshot setup - shoulders and up.

Do you think a photo in graduation regalia would be appropriate or nah?

Can anyone comment on their "policy" on not accepting anyone with <30 MCAT? I read another medical schools adcom on SDN say this.

Haha yeah I'm a little confused, just want to make sure I don't write something off topic lol

It's what you're doing now, or if you've been out of school longer than a year, what you have been doing.

Ex: Graduated in 2012, been doing research at fancy research facility, writing books, going on research expeditions, shadowing etc

Or: Graduated in 2014, will be shadowing this and that person, volunteering in this super busy, trauma center, working as an EMT, etc

I've come to accept that as a pre-med you are never allowed to just not be doing something lol

89.6% sure they are specifically referring to your first undergrad.

Ex: Freshman Year/Sophomore Year/G1/Junior Year/G2/Senior Year

Lol mitosis joke...🙂

Probably best to use both.

I'm confused.. isnt' question 3 asking about interrupted undergrad? how is it diversity or why hofstra?

are we talking about question 5? (Please share anything your application does not include, but that you would like to bring to our attention. For example, is there anything special you would add to our School? )

Hey everyone! I'm an incoming MS 1. Let me know if you guys have any questions about the application/interview process. And once we start classes, I'll be able to answer more questions about the school, curriculum, facilities and all that (though I'll try and tell you whatever I know so far before then!)

First, congrats on your acceptance! I definitely have a couple questions, if you don't mind...

-Why Hofstra? (Was it your first choice? What other schools were you considering? What makes Hofstra stand out?)
-How long did it take between submitting your secondary and getting contacted for an interview? Interview and acceptance?
-What was the interview process like?

Thanks and happy 4th! :horns:

Did anyone who submitted the non-traditional low GPA form get a secondary yet?
