2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the number I listed are outside of that. The current MSAR lists "tuition and fees", "other", and "health insurance". So I guess my question was if the cost of living, transportation, and health insurance quotes were appropriately highly.

Edit: For another data point, NYU and Cornell both cite "other (living, transportation, etc.)" as ~19k. Might have something to do with subsidized student housing?

It might have something to do with the fact that Hofstra requires you to have a car, so that cost would be included. Because of the nature of our initial clinical experiences, it requires that you be able to get to your site every week and some of the sites are a bit away.

Does that mean the minority of us who don't know how to drive should not apply? Just curious since I have an II but will withdraw if that's the case...

I feel as if every medical school requires students to travel at this point. I have yet to hear of one that doesn't (i.e. going to community clinics, volunteering, going to different hospitals, ummm grocery shopping!!!). I'd for sure learn if I were you. Of course, I've never really lived in NYC and I understand a lot of people use the metro there, but I'm not sure if the metro's really prevalent throughout Hempstead if anyone could comment on that.

I know long island very well, I don't live too far away now and lived there for some time; driving is definitely a necessity. The roads/streets there are built for cars, and not pedestrians. It isn't the same as metro NYC where driving is unnecessary. You can, of course, get by with a combo of hitching rides/taxi's/the occasional bus that MAY go your route, etc., but it will become a huge hinderance and very difficult to manage, for necessities like groceries, etc. I'm making an assumption but, fortunately, for someone applying to med school, you definitely have the capabilities to learn to drive (short of some unknowable physical ailments). As long as you can muster up the cash/resources to get a couple lessons in, you should be ok. Driving in Long Island is relatively safe and benign (vs driving in manhattan). Buying a car can be difficult as well, but if you can muster up $2000-$5000, possibly through school loans, etc., you can get a working car to last you throughout all 4+ years of school/training. Best of luck

There were several people in our class that didn't drive coming in who learnt to drive within the year.

For people who submitted a email requesting to be placed on the waitlist for an earlier interview date, did you received a confirmation afterwards?

I emailed them over a week ago, and have not heard anything. Have you?

Hey guys,

I may be just experiencing an adrenaline high from all of the excitement from today's events, but that may have been my best interview experience so far. Hofstra's faculty and students naturally foster a very welcoming atmosphere simply because everyone is happy to be there. There is a clear mission directed towards positivity and excellence that is defined not only by the plaques on their walls, but by the actions, mannerisms, and smiles of the people that represent their institution. It is a brand new school with a truly unique (I don't use that word lightly) curriculum that I think has the potential to change the landscape of medical education across the country.

I really wish I had time to write more about this school, but I've got to meet a friend in NYC in a short while. Good luck to everyone! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

@daveiscool I'm so glad you had such a great experience! Did you know who your interviewers were ahead of time? Were they both faculties or a mix of faculties/students? What impressed you the most about this school in terms of the curriculum? Was there anything you felt like you learned about the school on your interview day that wasn't as readily apparent/available on the website? Thanks for taking the time out to answer this!

Hey @EndoAdduct,

Good questions. They supplied us a packet with a lot of information in it, including the names of our two interviewers. There were two 30 minute interviews with faculty that were relaxed and casual. There are so many aspects of the new curriculum I like, but if I had to pick one... it'd have to be the Structure Lab. I highly recommend checking it out on their website - it's a very novel and complete way of approaching the subject of anatomy. Finally, I did a good deal of research on the school before attending this interview, and for the most part, the things they talked about in the presentations can be found on their website. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see how excited everyone was about this new school and curriculum - the positive atmosphere was definitely addicting. I was also lucky enough to have some awesome student hosts who shared their experiences with me and answered the myriad of questions I had as a prospective student. I would definitely stay with a student host if it is available to you. I hope this helps!

@daveiscool Thank you so much for the detailed response! I really appreciate the time you took to write it.

I am very excited for this school. I've heard some amazing things about Hofstra. I'm interested in schools with a more hands on/integrated approach and am glad to hear that Hofstra seems to be one of them. My interview is still months away but I'm beyond psyched for it. Thanks again!

Stats? if you don't mind. Thanks!

Has anyone sent an in the area email to hofstra? I will be in new york at the beginning of December, so I may have missed my window for them already

I actually got an email saying I had a host just a few days ago! My interview is near the end of October

You get an email inviting you to apply for student hosting, then you fill out a waiver and they try to match you with a host. I interviewed last week and they sent me host information about three weeks before my interview.

Do they allow parking on university premises? In the email they said something about across from a soccer field. Anyone know how fast it crowds up?

I interviewed on a holiday/break from classes so the small, front parking lot was open for us to use, but if class is happening it's always full and you can park in the lot across the street from the school. The soccer field is between the school and the lot. It's always got some spots open.

Hey guys, I tried to skim the thread but not sure if this has been asked yet. What would be the closest airport to the school? I'm just wondering if there's potential for a relatively cheap(<$20) taxi ride directly from an airport to the school.

Recently interviewed here as well and couldn't agree more. Hofstra's interview day was by far my best interview experience! Liked the school before but completely fell in love with it after my interview day. One of my top choices, hoping to get some love later on in November.

Will the status remain "in the review process" until the end of interview season if you're not invited to be interviewed?

Hey guys I have an interview coming up
for anyone who has already had one How was it?
an anxiety ... any questions you didnt expect ?

@member271 Can you or any other current students comment on the housing situation at hofstra? I heard the rents and CoL in general is quite high because of the proximity to nyc. Do students live in houses, apartment complexes, on campus, off campus? Thank you

Hey guys! Hope interviews and applications are going well for everyone! Any sub-30 interview invites/WLs/acceptances? If so, when were you complete and what were your stats? Thanks for the information and good luck to all applicants!

Does anyone who interviewed first week of October know when the decisions will be released? I remember them saying something about November but I don't believe they gave us a specific date.

According to last year's thread, it was around midNovember. However decision release dates seemed rather slow, and I can imagine it's because the faculty interviewers probably have difficulty attending adcom meetings. Hopefully us October interviewees won't have to wait past December haha.

Just an FYI: The interview waitlist is moving.

I had been put on it after an interview offer in Feb and I just got bumped up to having an interview next month!

This is fabulous news, thanks! When did you sign up for the February date? And did you have another NYC interview around your new date to give you ITA status?

I don't have another ITA email yet, but given that it's less than a month away, I'm not going to bother. Boston to NYC isn't much of a trek for me (~50 RT with buses) and I'm not sure if I want to bother with an ITA 3 weeks before an interview. If travel required a flight or more significant travel, I might do it, but I don't want it to look like I'm just trying to get a bump at this point.

I would have let them know if my update letter was sent in already. I'm hoping to have one out by mid november after wrapping up and submitting a few papers (like 3?).

I got the II around sept 12 originally.

Lots of interview waitlist movement. I got a mid December interview in late August and I thought I had put myself on the interview waitlist then, but called yesterday and they said they never got my email. I then was placed on the waitlist and just today got moved to an early Nov date. If you would prefer an earlier date I would strongly suggest calling into the office to ask to be added to the waitlist.

I just called today about the interview wait list and they did say a few people may have slipped between the cracks so it is definitely worth the call as those above me mentioned!

Is Hofstra pretty much done giving out IIs? This was a top choice for me and I'm starting to lose all hope of hearing from the NY schools. 🙁

No way!! Don't lose hope at all! One of my best friends goes to Hofstra, I went out with her and a bunch of her friends from med school the other night. Many of them received interview invites much later in the season to Hofstra, and other schools, so don't stress. It is NOT over! 😀

If there is movement on the interview waitlist, then this means that people are cancelling interviews and other spots later are opening up. I think it's way too early to even think about this.

For those of you who are on the wait list, can I hear your reasoning for this? It's just that their email said you have no better chance of getting in if you interview earlier, but is there something I'm missing?

We don't like waiting an extra 2-3 months?

For me, I did not want to interview near Christmas. But even though I believe that their email said you have no better chance getting in if you interview earlier, earlier could never hurt.
