2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well this is weird because it seems last year had no action after the single mass notification day in March. I also interviewed in November and heard nothing today. Not going to get my hopes up though.

maybe they broke up waitlisting and rejecting?? Or maybe itll just take them a few days....T.T

One person did post a waitlist today, but I was also expecting everyone to find out where they stand on the same day like last year

Sorry if this is kinda jumping the gun, but doe anybody know when the match data for the first class comes out?

Didn't get an email notification but I just signed in right now and my online portal showed waitlist :/

Me too. I LOVED this school and it is one of my top choices, so I was a little disappointed in the WL, but I already have two acceptances elsewhere so I guess I shouldn't be greedy....

Waitlisted as well, finally. It's okay, I'll take it.

Late to the rejection wagon but yeah, same here..ah well, lucky enough to have options elsewhere. Officially signing off the Hofstra thread!

just got the email about being waitlisted.

+1
Just received email about being waitlisted. Hopefully there is a lot of waitlist movement. Really love Hofstra

WL as well. really confused, thought i really had this one in the bag

From what I can tell, Hofstra seems to have straight out accepted applicants with very high MCAT scores. I think applicants like myself with scores<30 are placed on the waitlist for the most part. My suggestion is write a letter of intent if you have a low score, you still have a good shot then.

Waitlisted. I thought I had this one in the bag as well. 🙁

I got waitlisted with a 37, but my interview invite was extended to me all the way back in mid September with only mid February interview slots available for me to sign up, so I'm guessing something weird is happening with my application.

edit: I actually got a 37, not a 38 (oops)

Same here. 35, II back in August interviewed in January

My stats for anyone interested:

Lizzy M: ~70
Submitted Supplemental App: 7/2/14
Interview Invitation: 8/4/14
Interviewed: 10/6/14
Waitlist: 3/18/15

Crazy long wait from the time I interviewed until the time I received WL status. Withdrew my app today. Good luck to everyone this cycle!

I dunno, I had a 35 and was placed on WL this week. Granted, my GPA isn't great (3.5x)...

Edit to add: I also thought the interview went really well-- it was one of my favorites of the whole season.

I think I wasn't very clear and people misunderstood what I meant. I meant to say if you have a lower end score (sub 30), then your BEST bet is probably on the waitlist. Not that everyone on the waitlist must have lower scores. Sorry if this was confusing.

Honestly, you guys kind of amazed me with your MCAT scores. I am constantly shocked by how competitive this process is.

Waitlisted with an upper 30s score; MCAT really isn't everything

Withdrew today, good luck to all the rest of the people!
Probably should have done it earlier but I was lazy 🙁

Hey guys - had a thought/question that I just wanted to pose to the forum :

How much weight are you placing on the significance of the match results from Hofstra this year? My question arises from the fact that Hofstra SOM's first class was, from what I understand, composed of rock star applicants that were poached with full scholarships. I don't know how objectively competitive I will be in four years, but I am inclined to say that this first graduating class out of Hofstra will be skewed towards the upper end of the competitiveness spectrum because of the quality of candidates in the cohort. Do you all think this will affect the match results this year in ways that make it so that we cannot interpret them as the typical match record for the school on a given year after this one?

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing... Thanks for your thoughts!

Holy match list, people. I'm not sure when it'll be posted officially on the SOM's page, but, since I know you all are curious, here are some of the highlights. 100% match (29 people), ~30% matched within the health system, almost all of them matched to one of their first four choices, and the majority of the class that did not match within the health system is going to a program where most medical schools have never sent a resident. Big names include: Duke, USC, Yale, MSK, Jefferson, Columbia, Sinai, Einstein, NYU, and Vandy.

Aren't there 40 students in the class of 2015? Doesn't that mean that only 72% matched? What about the other 11 students? If you are a current student, could you or anyone else shed light on this? Thanks!

BUMP.

Can anyone give more information on how significant the match list actually is/if it's more of a reflection on the students or on the school as a whole? Not trying to downplay the results; obviously it's a major accomplishment for everyone involved...just asking out of curiosity.

They said at my interview day that most of the students were staying for an additional year to pursue research or some further degree to increase their chances of matching to a top residency. They said that this is common and that this is why only 29 students participated in match.

I completely agree with you. I wasn't even going to look at match results knowing that most of their first year students were selected from Johns Hopkins, etc. and would be likely to place that way. I attended a public school and do not expect these rock star residency opportunities to reflect the ease of my residency application in four years. So to answer your question, I'm not weighing it into my decision, but instead considering if the school is a good fit for me.

The admissions stats have only improved since this first class was accepted. Our percent acceptance continues to go down, numbers go up, and financial incentive has changed. Each class is certainly more rock-star than the one previous to it. The belief is widespread that this match list is what we will continue to produce. It may not matter to you, at this point, but it matters to us for the following reason.

Thank you for your very insightful reply. I agree with you when you say that the match list is indicative of the degree of confidence that established residency program directors have in the graduating class. That being said , can you comment empirically on the quality of students following the first class? I was under the impression that the first class included many rock stars who attended partially because many full-ride scholarships were offered. These scholarships were not offered to matriculants in later years, as far as I know. Can you comment with statistics about the rising quality matriculants at the SOM?

To answer all of your points, 29/40 because of research, couples match, etc. as stated above. 100% of those that applied matched.

This list shows that people trust NS-LIJ to produce great doctors. These programs are long-established and have a historical precedent for who and how they train. The biggest question for all of us in these early classes was "will this school produce doctors that the world trusts and respects?" All of us, obviously, believe that answer is yes, and this is evidence of that

Thanks for your reply. Among other things, there's one thing this school definitely has and that's passion. This is evidenced in yourself, the students, the faculty, and everyone else involved. Seriously congrats to all of you and we all hope for your continued success.

The link above shows a rising GPA and MCAT score trend. Furthermore, there is an increasing number of applicants per year so I would guess that naturally results in increasingly higher-caliber students being accepted each year.

So, does anybody know when the match list comes out?

Really curious about it...
