2014-2015 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The #4 secondary question "Your patient has a rare disease and would be a great candidate for an experimental new treatment. You are the principal investigator for the research project and you and your Chair would like to pursue this experiment with the patient. The parents of your patient are adamant against the treatment. How would you handle this situation?" sounds like something that happened in an episode of greys anatomy!

Dr. Bailey got in a lot of trouble for secretly applying an experimental treatment for a patient although the parents were strictly against it!!

Haha can I talk about this on the secondary?

Of course you can. But be warned that medical dramas (Scrubs not included) are notoriously inaccurate and not how a potential doctor should frame their opinions. Remember, you'd be talking about a TV show in a medical school secondary. Just my 2c though!

I totally think of Greys every time something medical comes up haha...

The important thing to remember is the concept of informed consent (minors cannot give consent by themselves - only assent). I work in clinical trials so this is familiar territory, but in general physicians can't just do whatever they want. If they don't get sued they will likely get fired. It's a huge deal that Greys only slightly captures.

I will rely on Scrubs to get me through medical school

I'm prewriting this secondary. Does anyone know the character limits? I don't see them on the OP.

Thanks!

Off the top of my head I think it is just a two paragraph limit, no character/word. Previous years had 25 lines but there is none this year. Just be respectful to people reading thousands of apps and keep it to two brief paragraphs!

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem but I recently had to email admissions because my status was stuck as incomplete even though my letters and app were in.

They were super nice and fixed it right away!

Had the same problem and I agree! I emailed and they were so friendly and fixed it the same day!

Just submitted the secondary! I hope they get back to me soon!

Under review here too.. Any idea on when their interview season begins?

EDIT: Looked it up from last year, earliest was 8/7. The rest followed the week after and then steadily after that.

Anyone know if the "you have been reviewed" status is a sign of anything?

Check out page three of this thread.

It means they have decided not to offer you an interview at this time, but that doesn't mean you can't get one a few weeks/months down the road. They'll look over your application again as the cycle progresses and re-evaluate it. You either stay on hold or they'll invite your for an interview.

Turned in my application last Friday and by Monday I had gone from preliminary review to under review. I've read that quick status changes usually result in hold status. I'm curious, on average, how many days before going from under review to hold status?

it's normal...You don't want the status to change from "under review" to "reviewed" quickly....it's normal to go from "under preliminary review" to "under review" quickly.

Does anyone know if the former EAP (Early Assurance Program) candidates who didnt get accepted their sophomore year from Loyola Undergrad are interviewed early or if they have a higher chance of acceptance?

how long is too quick for status to change from under review to reviewed for the app to be considered hold? My app is under review for 2 weeks since i completed....is it a good sign or normal?

I don't think anyone can really answer that question; everything is pretty up in the air right now.

status changed to "reviewed"....sigh...i guess I'm on hold after two weeks of being "under review"

any status changes guys?

Been under review for about three weeks.

Thank god I can recycle answers from previous secondaries at this point...

Is anyone else having trouble uploading the picture? All of the requirements (less than 2 MB and less than 20 characters) are fulfilled but when I go to select the picture, it does not allow me to. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Also, I will add this exact same picture has worked for all other secondaries that have requested headshots.

I believe I got the advice from somewhere upthread to drag and drop the picture directly instead of hitting the upload button. Worked for me.

I was able to resolve the same problem by saving the picture as a GIF file.

PSA for the pictures you upload: If you get accepted, these pictures are what they'll use on your school ID. Make sure you look nice!

I had the same problem on a Mac, but when I tried it on a PC it worked. And when you go to upload on the PC make sure you select "All files" on the bottom as it defaulted to GIF only

Hahaha oh man. On the print application page, my pic got super stretched and I look like I gained 40 lbs.

I was complete 8/5 and I checked back today and it says my file has already "been reviewed." Seems like I've been put on hold rather quickly, no hope 🙁 I'm starting to get pretty anxious and worried about not getting any interviews.

If you're not on the pre-interview waitlist, you're fine. Relax.

Why is the "been reviewed" status an indication of pre-interview waitlist? To me, the status says that the committee has looked at the applicant's file and will make a decision in the near future.

You and me both! I'm super anxious as well...keep hope though it's still early in the season! Who knows, "been reviewed" may mean exactly what the previous poster said.

Because they reviewed your application and decided not to invite you for interview at this time. If you were going to get an interview right away, your status would have changed from "under review" to "invited for interview".

For people who are already stressing out, keep in mind we are still only in August. Our admissions committee only just had their admissions orientation, so that means they were still processing last year's applications up until just a few weeks ago. It is still very early in the new cycle, and even if you are on hold, that doesn't mean you won't get invited for interview later this year or early next year. That happened a few times in last year's thread.
