2014-2015 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II just now. I hadn't checked my portal in quite a while, but I know last month I had the "has been reviewed" message that everyone treated like a death sentence.

Just wondering if this constitutes sending an update. I mentioned on my secondary (in the additional info section) that I would be auditioning for a professional choir and I just found out that I got in! I'm currently in "under review" status, should I send an update?

Has anyone here sent any updates?

Others might have different opinions on this, but I say go for it. They allow three updates (if I remember right), and if you're doing cool stuff, I'm sure they want to know! I'm starting two new volunteer projects next week, and once I start I'll definitely send updates. Showing interest and that Loyola is important to you must be good!

Sent in an update and the website glitched and sent in 3 of the same file. Dang it. I guess I shall email tomorrow morning.

II via email just now! 🙂 Complete 7/17, status was "under review" and then changed via the portal after receiving the email. 9/17 was the earliest available day. Keep your hopes up everyone!

Hello applicants!! Like my lovely classmates M.MD and MedicalHopeful, I, too, am an M1 at Stritch.
I know I found great solace in last year's applicant thread and advice from current students, so we're here to help anyway we can 🙂

My advice: 1. Take the secondary seriously! Loyola conducts a holistic review and your essays help paint the whole picture

2. Don't freak out! As I told a group of interviewees the other day, none of us have any idea how adcoms come to their conclusions so don't stress about it.

3. That picture you uploaded for your secondary may very well be your ID photo next year so choose wisely!

Cheers!

Hi there! Thanks for your help on here. I'm wondering if it is worth it to use 1 of the 3 available updates if I'm currently on hold? Did any of your classmates receive an interview after a hold? Thanks!

Not a student, but just wanted to offer two cents. I submitted an update (1 out of 3 lol), but only because it was 2 new publications, a drug for a study I work with getting FDA approved and a volunteering update for some things I've been doing from June till now. So it was kind of a packed update to my application.

I think it depends on whether you think it will make a significant impact to your app. Someone on another thread said the hardest part is crossing that threshold into II territory, so if you think this update will give you that extra push, I say go for it. 🙂

I agree with OgieMe. Updates are more for items you would've added to your app had they occurred earlier. And yes, plenty of people get IIs and acceptances after being put on hold-- we had a couple classmates accepted the week of orientation. So no one knows how adcoms think so don't give up hope!

First year here and loving the school! For those waiting, I didn't interview until March and was accepted 2 weeks later. Don't worry, if you were put on hold or haven't heard back.

Best of luck this cycle!

This is really reassuring. Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback @Mmedran and @OgieME. So first author publication being accepted = worth using update 2 of 3? I have other publications listed on my app from before but no other first author ones. I've been on hold for awhile....

Does Loyola have a student hosting program? I can't find it on the website and Chicago is expensive...

EDIT- It's under "Your day at Loyola-Stritch."

  • Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail.
Changed today. I've been complete sometime in July. Sucks.

AHHHHH PANIC MOMENT PLS HELP
I was out of the country for the end of July and the good bit of August. Struggling on finishing up secondaries- was starting to work on Loyola and I realized that they said they closed my file? Writing to the adcom now, just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this? I didn't realize there was a time constraint 😱

It says in the email where they invite you to complete a secondary that everything needs to be submitted within 4-6 weeks. Has it been longer than 6 weeks since you received the secondary?

Yup 🙁 Exactly 2 months. I've emailed them tonight, and sitting on my fingers crossed. Hopefully someone will take pity on me- my internet connection was slow (dial-up modem) and I was only able to skim the emails on my phone. I must have missed that bit. Of course, it is only my fault, I should have been more careful, but I wasn't expecting a tight turnaround time

I'm sorry 🙁 I hope it works out for you!

Thanks. I sent a very grovely email letting them know how much I would appreciate the chance. Will probably follow up with a phone call in the morning. I'll just be super bummed if I get turned down because I wasn't organized enough to keep track of dates... especially since I already paid the application fee

The people in admissions are really nice. I'd be surprised if they didn't let you finish your application. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks. TBH, this is one of my first choice schools besides my state school. I should have worked on the application first thing when I got back, but it was so long and I had schoolwork to do, so I put it off until I could spend more time with it. Mea culpa.

Love that SDN is here for these freakouts otherwise I'd just be complaining to my roommate, and she probably just wants to go to bed. You guys are dabomb.com

Update: all is well. The admissions people were super nice. Now Loyola has moved even further up my list if everyone at the school is that nice

Everyone really is that nice. The friendly environment at this school is almost unmatched in my opinion. It's a great place spend 4 years of your life (or longer if you decide to do residency here). Good luck to you!

Went to "has been reviewed" status sometime in the last day or so. Went under review 7/30.

What would you all venture their acceptance rate of interviewees is in the first month or two?
(From their website, it says that over the whole cycle it's ~67%.)

Good question, I'm also curious, as I'll be there this week.

Also...I apologize if I missed this, but does anyone know when I'll be notified of a decision if I interview this week? I know they'll tell us at orientation; I suppose I'm just excited!

It's usually a month after you interview.

If I recall, the AAMC does not allow the first months' decisions to come out til Oct 15 (this may have changed??)... Thereafter, it's about 2-4 weeks ( I interviewed Oct 3rd and got the call Oct 18). All in all, I believe Viviana tells you when you can expect a decision.

@ M.MD & Mmedran, thanks!

I'm also still curious about bolloX's questions: "What would you all venture their acceptance rate of interviewees is in the first month or two?

No idea. I think the general correlation between interviewing early and getting accepted is the small size of the applicant pool early on and the availability of seats. Basically, odds are better than mid-cycle bc you have less (in number, not talent) competition and more seats to compete for... Alas, those are just MY thoughts.

Also, if any student student can answer another ridiculous question: regarding Loyola's application cycle, and only theirs...how early is a late September interview? I think the first date was the 2nd, so probably early, but every school is a bit different in what they consider 'early' or 'mid'.

Told ya it was ridiculous. But thank you!

Pretty damn sure September is early anywhere dude.

II just now by phone!!! Super excited, I've heard great things about Loyola. Ill update with available interview dates if possible.

OOS, 32/3.63 - submitted secondary on 7/20

Edit: As I was scheduling my interview nearly every day in the second week of October was available. Looks like there are plenty of interviews left to go out. Good luck everyone.
