2014-2015 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II here just now. I was complete early August, LizzyM ~69. Have to call and schedule it - I'll let you all know what kinds of dates they have available when I find out.

Scheduled my interview today for late January. Stay positive everyone! From what I've heard Loyola interviews all the way thru March/April.

Probably a dumb question that I'll have to contact the admissions office about, but has anyone had issues with the prerequisite form after receiving an II? I went to a UC in California (quarter system) and from the Loyola prerequisite page it appears students are supposed to have one year of laboratory in biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. So four full years of laboratory? I feel clicking the box that says I haven't completed the prerequisites is a red mark on the application. Anyone have any insight?

II today! Scheduled for January 14th at 6:45 AM. I thought I mis-heard her at first. I was complete in early August. So excited!

When did you call? I got the voicemail and left a message but haven't heard back from them. Should I call again?

What if we miss the call and don't check voicemail? I'm away till the 3rd. Do they send out emails as well?

They don't send emails, but check the Loyola Secondary app portal, cause that will be updated in regard to your interview status.

Strange! I think I got in early due to a cancelation. You could always call back in a week and ask if anything earlier has come up? I'm sure they're getting a lot of cancelations at this time.

Haha yeah, I just hope I can get through to schedule a day at some point today... no answer this morning either! I just want it scheduled. I'm super excited about this one!

II just now via email!! Complete early August, LizzyM <70. Under review the whole time. I sent one update a few months ago, which covered a number of things such as new shadowing experiences and community projects.

So excited and honored to have a chance to interview at my dream school! For everyone else still "under review", stay strong! WE CAN DO THIS!

Which pre-req don't you have a full year of? I ask because I just noticed on the stritch admission website that biochem can be substituted for part of the ochem requirement, which is relevant to my current situation (I graduated from a school that is also on the quarter system). Hope you were able to get things figured out!

Any other accepted students have the date for second look? I wrote it down but I have this feeling I wrote the wrong date. Couldn't find any info on the website or portal either!
Our calendar says 10th of April...?

Received a large envelope from Loyola just now, thinking it was an acceptance off of the alternate list. Instead, just a financial aid packet... 🙁

It was just for laboratory in general. The website made it sound as if applicants need one full year of lab for each of the subjects, whereas the admissions committee told me it's one full year of lecture plus A lab (as in quarter/semester). I got it all to work out!

Thanks for the concern and best of luck!!!

Was today 1/05/2015 supposed to be a committee meeting? anyone receive a phone call?.. feelin' anxious

During my interview in december, I was also told today 01/05/2015 was the committee meeting. Haven't gotten a call yet.

Did you (or anyone else) have problems getting in touch with admissions to schedule your interview? Not sure if there are holiday outages or if I just have bad timing but with my job, it's hard to sneak in even a short call to the office.

I had the same problem for all of last week! Today I called in the morning and was able to schedule my interview. It turns out the admissions coordinator was on vacation last week. I think you will have better luck calling in this week.

No problem. I interviewed 12/9 how about you? And I am anxious just like you. Hoping to hear something soon

awesome, great news. when was your interview date?

My interview is coming up, so I'm sure I'll get my questions answered then, but I'm wondering if any current students or those who have already interviewed can chime in. Where do most med students live? Do people tend to live near campus in Maywood/Oak Park, or are there more who choose to live in Chicago and commute? (I can imagine that wouldn't be much fun in the morning though, especially on the CTA/Metra or by car). Are people satisfied with the location, facilities, and campus community for the most part?

I was told that most people do NOT live near campus. Oak Park (and another neighborhood...forgot the name) are about 10-15 mins away via car, and the most popular places for students to live. Very few people live in Maywood (relatively more dangerous) and few commute from Chicago (~30-40 mins drive). Also, realize that traffic in Chicago is horrible. I stayed in Oak Park with my student host and a 6 min drive turned into 20 just because of traffic. Every one who I talked to seemed to love the school overall. The facilities are pretty solid as well. Loyola was by far my best interview experience...I am sure you will love this school. Good luck!

Oh also, stay with a student host if you can. It will really give you a good feel for the community, and they can throw you some tips for the interviews as well. Really calmed me down the night before. You will love Loyola.

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I do have some experience with Chicago traffic and I have to agree it's awful - I actually think it's worse than DC. Do you know if they provide parking for students, or (more likely) students have to pay for it?

I've heard only good things, really looking forward to interview day!

Mind sharing any interview tips for Loyola for those that can't stay with a host?! I interview in mid Feb

Parking is $5 all day at a garage right next door to the medical school. Super convenient!

Also, one more question - do you know what grading system Loyola uses for MS 1&2? Is it P/F or some other system?

That's not too bad, but between parking and gas, I can see your transportation costs adding up after a while.

Of course. What I remember is to really highlight your volunteer/leadership experiences. Read up on their mission statement and their philosophy. It's a Jesuit school so they have a huge passion for serving the underprivileged and treat patients from a spiritualistic/holistic standpoint. Know your application well because it was clear that both of my interviewers had read my file very closely. They picked you out of 10,000 people to interview for a reason, good luck!

Oh I thought you meant for interview day. Not sure about long-term parking.
And for your curriculum question, I actually forgot lol...something to ask during interview day =)

So I just uploaded an update to the loyola application site (currently on waitlist ). How do i confirm if the file was successfully uploaded.

Officially 18 weeks under review..... c'mon Loyola

Your friendly-neighborhood M1 here!

I can throw my 2-cents at your questions...

1. Most ppl stay close to campus during their pre-clinical years. My belief is that most ppl don't live in Maywood bc it's a small burb dominated by businesses and single-family homes
ImageUploadedBySDN Mobile1420583856.055421.jpg
. It's no more dangerous than the other neighborhoods. A few native Chicagolanders choose to commute from home or live in the city proper.

2. I haven't heard any complaints about the facilities. We have a nice open school with lots of resources. Being located in the burbs is nice bc you can have the quiet and more space but you can go into the city anytime.

3. Covered parking is available for $230/ year (parking garage c on a campus map), free parking lots are a little farther if you so choose

4. Traffic isn't that bad! Ok, rush hours are bad-- especially with snow :/

5. Most classes are Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail (typically 90,80,70 scale); a few are just P/F (like patient-centered medicine). No curving = no competition!
