2014-2015 Mercer University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Been lurking on this site for quite some time and finally decided to create an account.

I just got my email at about 11 am today offering me a position on the alternate list. I also got an email from MCG to be on their alternate list this past Friday. Been waiting with crossed fingers all month, I guess I will just have to keep waiting for a little longer and hope that good news comes my way!

Anyways, I was wondering what you guys think they mean exactly by "substantial updates" when they said that the list continues to be reviewed and encouraged students to submit updates to applications since your interview? Would that just be if you decide to take a class or get a new job or do some kind of new research (something big like that)?

Also, are those of you who did not get accepted so far going to go ahead and start signing up to take the new MCAT? And, if so, when are you guys going to start preparing for it? Any recommendations on study books? I'm really not looking forward to studying for and taking the new MCAT, but I don't want to wait till it's too late to start studying just because I may have a chance of getting accepted this year. I know that I should definitely try to retake the MCAT if I don't get in this year as that was my one weakness on my application, so I'm trying to gauge if I should just go ahead and start preparing for it.

No email here, either. I guess that means rejection from Mercer and wait listed at MCG.

I don't understand why they haven't sent out rejection emails..if they are sending out waitlist invites it must already be set.

I just need some peace and closure at this point

Depends what you scored on the MCAT. I'm in the minority here, but I think spending your time elsewhere is more beneficial than retaking the MCAT of you got like a 25-27 or higher.

I'd get a medical job, do some shadowing, go on a missions trip, and get involved in your community. Do some life changing stuff. You know, like make yourself more well-rounded than just a better test score.

But let's not talk about this here. There are lots of threads about retesting, and reapplication all over this site. This thread is really about Mercers Application process.

Good luck!

I think it's sensible to conclude we have been rejected. I would just plan on that being the case and not think about it anymore. I do wish Mercer, as well as other medical schools I've applied to, had a more standardized process for their applicants. There is certainly a lack of transparency in my opinion.

Congrats @aosoas , @Jedeye555 , @thagoodywoody , @Craftymedgirl , and to all others who were alternate listed today!!! Maybe you guys are the first wave to be place on the listed and potentially the first who'll get the chance to be accepted off. For all us other guys/gals who haven't received anything, maybe they are slowly sending them out or just sending out a few at a time. Either way, we've just gotta stay positive about this never ending process!

Yea joining the waitlisted group. Got email this morning. Pretty down. Hoping for the best but planning for the worst

Wailisted at 10:59 AM this morning. Not sure where I am on waitlist or how many people get waitlisted...just glad I am not rejected. I feel like I am top 20 waitlist material, but of course completely unsure of my ranking.

Do they waitlist every they interview???? or did some who interviewed not get the waitlist invitation?

No waitlist either. It would be nice to think there is still a chance but realistically this probably means a rejection. Unless someone knows that they've sent waitlist notifications separately in the past.

I received my wait list e-mail this morning as well around 11AM.

Do you think we will get a confirmation e-mail saying that they received our e-mail? I'd like to be sure they actually got it.

Just email someone at the admissions office and they told me that Mercer will be sending status updates this entire week. So to those of you who haven't heard anything back yet, including myself, just be patient because you may be next in line to hear something back.

For those that saw the waitlist tab earliest..did you happen to be those that have been waitlisted thus far? A couple of days ago..there was no waitlist tab for me...but I have one today. I have yet to receive a waitlist email... but I'm wondering if there is a relationship between the appearance of the waitlist tab and the subsequent waitlist placement?

Then one must assume there's something to it....we must be pretty far down on the WL 🙁 considering how much earlier others saw the tab..oh well. Let's hope for the best! MCAT Content review..here I come!!

I now have the waitlist tab although I find it funny that it still hasn't stated I've gone to my interview! LOL!

I am so confused because it states there in that waitlist tab in the paragraph that "the waitlist is not ranked" ... so how to do they decide who gets in first when spots open up?

My waitlist tab is blank...so can't really help there..but the assumption I would make is that the waitlist applicants are tied to their original scores? still not sure how that would qualify as unranked though...

It wasn't unranked last year as I had a meeting where it was explained and we were clearly told about the scoring system. I wonder if they changed it? WL tab still blank for me and I still did not get an email.

Im assuming those that received a wait list tab within the last few days will probably receive an email Friday. It took others around 5 days between appearance of tab and email.

Who knows if there's a correlation between the two. I do hope the tab means something and we get an email, however.

Wonder why we would be notified days after the first waitlist emails went out? Lots of questions and not enough answers lol

Might be because Ms Spear is out for the next few months (I hope it's nothing serious) starting a few weeks ago so I assume other people in the office are having to do her job as well as their own and given the nature of all of this, they might not want to give it to a temp. It would be a logical conclusion. I am not sure if it is an *accurate* one, but it is a logical one.

Hmmm

I believe its for maternity leave. When I interviewed late in January she seemed to be well along with her pregnancy.

That is what I assumed based on the 8 weeks off, but I didn't interview at Macon this year and I didn't want to publicly write my assumptions about her health in case I was wrong.

I know better than to make assumptions about pregnancy.

Well hopefully I didn't say anything I wasn't suppose to O.O

And isn't that right lol. I am sure you can find plenty of YouTube videos of people asking the WRONG question!

There is thread about dumb things said in interviews over in Pre-allo. One of them was one of those awkward questions about pregnancy. Spoiler alert: the interviewer was not pregnant.

Waitlist tab is on mine now, as well. Not sure if this is something I should be excited about or not, lol.

Has anyone who interviewed in Savannah been waitlisted? Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

I interviewed in Savannah and was waitlisted. They may just be sending out the waitlist in groups arbitrarily since so many people have yet to hear anything. And for the record, my waitlist tab has actual content now. Before the email it was blank, but now it says something similar to the email.

I figured. It's just fun to come up with reasons as to why the time differences (assuming those with a tab will get a spot on the list).

Maybe they saved the best for last!!! Fingers crossed! :-D

Does anyone know how they select who to pull off the wait list if it isn't "ranked?"

My thoughts exactly. Last night, my roommate and I were speculating about how they could possibly decide on someone from the wait list if the list isn't ranked. Our only quasi-logical suggestion: a lottery system. And that almost makes less sense than not having a ranked list. So who knows. lol

Maybe by not ranked they mean they haven't actually given us a number position on the list but they have given each person a score based on their interview. That way they can just accept the person with the next best score without them being in a ranked order on a list. Of course then everyone is essentially 'ranked' just without admissions having to specifically say they have a number 1 through 200 or whatever describing their position on the waitlist. This probably sounds a little ridiculous and is basically the same thing as being ranked, but I just can't imagine that every time a person is pulled from the waitlist admissions meets to decide who it is or it is random. I don't know... I just want to be accepted so I can stop thinking about this stuff!

So today we should hear something right? It is the end of the week..

None here.

I am reminded of the interview two years ago where Mercer never sent me a rejection or a WL and they had interviewed me. :/

One would assume the waitlist is finished by now...unless they keep extending the deadline. Was a tough cycle for me...already looking forward to turning the page...just need some closure now.

I agree I need some closure. It frustrates me that they wouldn't stick to their deadlines about at least letting people know.

I called the admissions office and asked about my status and Ms. Jackson said Mercer doesn't abide by the deadline (if there is even a real deadline in the first place haha) and that we could still technically be waitlist now until July as well as rejected. I also have a blank waitlist tab on my app now too. Good luck to everyone!

For what it's worth, I didn't have the tab and got a rejection post interview last week. I was on the first interview day of the season and I knew I wouldn't fit the mission after the interview, so not surprised in the slightest. But I think that's a good sign for those of y'all with no correspondance but a wait list tab on the portal
