2014-2015 Stony Brook University Application Thread

Go to stony. downstate facilities looked preeeetty crappy

Yeah I agree but the clinical preparation would be better there. Stony is close to family and I prefer suburbs though... Decisions decisions

I wasn't even aware there was a HPWL. Oh well. I'm just a regular. Feels bad, man.

I am not sure how they communicate that status but even if you aren't HPWL there is typically a bit of normal WL movement as well since they go through all of HPWL. Not much movement but some with the actual amount varying from year to year.

When I applied 2 years ago the HPWL was exhausted by the last week of May.
Thanks for the answer, I'm just curious, how'd you find that out? In the email they said: "Although we cannot make a definitive offer of acceptance at this time, we are optimistic that based on our history of prior admissions cycles a seat will become available for you." I guess that makes it sound like everyone on the high priority list got in in recent years.

From that year's school-specific thread. I was on the regular waitlist and got off of it in mid June.

Ah nice. From last year's thread it sounds like sometimes they accept people from the high priority list and regular wait list concurrently, but I suppose people on the high priority list are still in better shape. Maybe it's just if they want to round out the classes demographics and nobody from the high priority list fits the bill.

Oh and to anyone who has been accepted, I was wondering when the revisit weekend was? I doubt I'll be accepted in time to be able to attend it, but I was just curious.

has anyone here ever heard of any students in a masters of physiology program that guaranteed acceptance to the med school for the following year? can current students chime in? I got offered an interview for this and would like to hear some people's opinions on it. thank you!

@DoctorLacrosse have you been accepted to this masters program or does it require an additional interview?

it is another interview I have to go on soon. they said all info will be given then, though they said the way I am describing it basically sounds correct (except they didn't give me all the details about the requirements yet).

If anyone knows of anyone in it or has details I'd love to hear!!

@DoctorLacrosse, so did they already reject you post interview? I'm in the same boat as you, many md wait lists. I wish they invite me to this if I don't get accepted anywhere this cycle

yes I've been rejected, on many waitlists. I'm not sure what went into me getting chosen for it, but I'm still excited and hope they take me for it!

After serious consideration I decided to withdraw. Good luck to everyone on the WL!

Thanks to everyone who withdrew now and didn't wait all the way until the deposit was due, somehow. If your reason for withdrawing had something to do with Stony, I'd appreciate a PM haha.

If I'm on the HPWL, is it worth doing my FAFSA now?

There is typically a lot of movement in the HPWL so if you are interested in SB, I'd do the FAFSA. Not sure if there is a downside?

My mom is just superstitious and doesn't like counting chickens before they hatch, haha. I'll do it though.

After a long and arduous decision making process, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Stony Brook. Good luck to everybody still on the wait list!

I did the opposite just now. Withdrew from Upstate and will attend Stony. Out of curiosity, what were the deciding factors on your decision?

Withdrew my acceptance from here today. Best of luck to everyone still waiting!

It was a really tough decision and I think I would have enjoyed my experience at either school. A lot of things went into my final decision: I felt like the pre-clinical curriculum at Upstate fit me slightly better and the benefits of the longer clinical curriculum at Stony Brook (more time to figure out a specialty) was less applicable to me due to my fairly wide exposure during paramedic school. The biggest factor for me was more of a personal one - my wife received a job offer out near Syracuse, so it just ended up making more sense for me to go to Upstate. On a side note, two things Stony Brook had going for it is that I really liked my interviewers on interview day and I thought the sim lab was very cool.

+1. Made the same decision. It was an agonizing one, but in the end I knew it was best for me.
Good luck to everybody still waiting! I hope my seat goes to one of you!

What date do you have to accept or withdraw acceptance from Stony Brook? Also does anyone know based on previous years when waitlist movement might begin?

4/30 as per AMCAS guidelines....You can only keep one acceptance and withdraw from others. Hope this helps,

From previous years, HPWL starts moving ~2 weeks after traffic day if that's any help. For regular WL movement it seems to start around June if there is any. Crossed fingers for lots of movement!

Traffic day is 4/30? I'm on the HWPL and have a dilemna cuz I got into a DO school (Touro) and on May 15 a $2000 is due or else I lose my seat there... :/

Yep it's traffic day! I think there's a good chance you'll be taken off the HPWL so I wouldn't worry much about it. You should still call Stony tomorrow to ask them about your chances when they see the results from today. Worth a shot.

If they don't give you a clear answer then I'd just let down the 2 grand near the deadline. It's not much compared to the tuition you'll be paying during the next four years.

Last time I called the lady who answered wasn't too helpful, but I guess it's worth another shot. Should I just say, "I'm on the high priority wait list, and I was wondering what my chances were?" I guess it'd be a bad idea to throw in the whole deposit situation?

And yeah, the $2000 is also little compared to the tuition differential of Stony vs a private DO school.

Lastly, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but how common is financial aid besides loans for SUNY students? I did look up the financial aid page on their website, but I was wondering how common an award actually was. My parents are separated and my Mom makes about ~$40k a year.

I'm sure they'll respond if you just ask how much movement there will be on the HPWL without the deposit situation. If they don't then just wait it out cause they weren't going to tell you either way 😛

For your other question, I don't know how common it is but here's a quote from last year:
Just got back from Second Look. You should email Mary Allen if you want an estimate of your financial aid package, including any need based institutional aid. The official award won't be available until June or July.
If you REALLY want to find out then I think it'd be easiest if you just emailed the student affairs office like midnightoil suggested.

I got accepted today! Nice of them to do it over the phone, although the email telling me to call them was pretty much a confirmation. Thank you so much for all of your advice here, and I'm looking forward to meeting those of you who are attending as classmates. Also, thanks to those people who withdrew their acceptances, lol.

Congrats! Just got the same email today and called to find out I was accepted. She mentioned that I was near the top of their waitlist, so I guess I was on the HPWL, but I honestly did not know that. It was news to me!

I am now deciding between here and Univ. of Cincinnati, which is where I committed at on traffic day. Decisions decisions. This is tough. Any current Stony Brook students have awesome stories about why I should go here?

Congratulations!! I'm pretty sure you're right about the HPWL considering the date but could you check your waitlist email to confirm? I'm just really curious if it was the waitlist or HPWL that moved.

Just double-checked, my original waitlist email didn't say anything about HPWL. It only ever said "waiting list" and "wait list". I sent in an update letter a little over a week ago and got a confirmation that they had received it, but I have no emails from them referring to any kind of HPWL>

Awesome, thanks for checking! So it's either they depleted the HPWL (unlikely) or they draw from both lists simultaneously. Both sound good to me though!

Anyone know when financial aid forms are due for those accepted off of the waitlist? I heard it's somewhere in the range of 2 weeks, but couldn't verify this through what the financial aid office sent.
