2014-2015 Texas A&M Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got an II today! I'm the one who applied on the VERY LAST DAY because my secondary got deleted when I paid back in May...so don't lose hope!

Congrats! are you still attending the interview having already received prematch(es)?

Thank you! And yes, I am. I am keeping all of my options open, I don't want to miss out on a school I could potentially fall in love with...especially since I'm a reapplicant so I just want to make the most informed decision that I can.

I interviewed in September, but I haven't heard anything yet. Are they sending acceptances out until December? I'm really nervous b/c it's the only Texas school I've interviewed at so far and interviewed before Oct. 15. Doing my best to stay optimistic and pray that I hear good news soon ^_^

I'd like to know too!

Okay after digging through last year's thread, it looks like one more batch went out after 3 weeks. So for us that'll be around December 9th.

Also, they sent out a few rejection letters nearing the 5th week. So around December 18th for us.

tl;dr
Pre-match batch two ~ December 9th
A few rejections ~ December 18th

Okay, thanks! Praying that we all receive acceptances in 3 weeks, which for me will be around the last day of classes, ie. start of final exams.

For everyone who has received an acceptance or hasn't heard anything yet, when did you have your interview? The specific months will suffice. I just want to see if people who interviewed earlier heard back first...

I was in their second date I think in August. Interview went really well LizzyM 72. Probably my #2 school right now. But will likely drop this pre-match if I can work out a Masters with UTH.

For those who have been to the interview-Did they mention that they mostly want engineers and MD/PhD's in Houston? I am wondering if that is something that will actually be the case or if they just mentioned it as a minor aside at my interview.

Do you guys think a Dec 4 interview has a shot at prematching? Or will it be up to the match?

The pre-match period continues until December 31, so you do have a chance of pre-matching. Also, I read somewhere on this thread that the second batch of pre-matches were sent out December 9 of last year. I am also interviewing December 4 so good luck to us!

Does anyone know how many students they interview on one interview date?

Just got a II for mid December. I was complete since end of June and thought all hope was lost by now. I'm honestly so happy right now. For those of you still waiting, I know it's so much easier said than done but PLEASE don't give up on yourself yet! There's still hope!

I got an II few days ago at the temple campus 🙂, does anyone know the difference as far as quality of teaching/resources/student body between the temple and College station campuses?
Also does anyone know the nature of interviews at the temple campus and how many they accept?
I know that there's Scott & White at Temple but the school of medicine looks smaller with less resources (as I see from researching).
I really appreciate the help

You're interviewing at Temple, but you'll be going to medical school in Bryan if you get accepted.
That's what I thought, but from reading their website, they have a four years program at Temple too. But you might be right, i'm really not sure.

That's the old system. They're implementing a new method starting this year. Basically, all students complete their first year in Bryan (College Station). Students then have the option of completing their remaining three years (i.e. the remaining half year of pre-clinicals and then all clinical years) at either Bryan, Temple, Round Rock, or Dallas campuses. They are also offering a new Houston option starting next year, though they don't have the facilities for pre-clinical education so you would finish that at Bryan if you chose the Houston track.

For those of us interviewing on December 11- will there still be time for us to pre-match before December 31?

Ha we both have interviews on the 1st at San Antonio and 12th at A&M! I hope we still have time to pre-match though

Does anyone know when we submit our preferences for 2-4th year? I seem to remember them saying it is during M1, but last year people submitted and knew before they started first year (however, I know a lot of things are changing this year.) Just curious!

It'll happen right after match. They said during the interviews that they will send out a link to a site where we can input our choices, then they will decide from there.

Guess I missed this on interview day but if you go here you're also considered a regular a&m student and have access to all their undergrad facilities, rec center, sports season passes, etc. that's pretty dope

Congrats to everyone who has prematched so far!
If you have any questions about med school life, feel free to ask here or PM me

And don't worry if you haven't gotten in yet, there is still plenty of time. A lot of people match and there's also the waitlist!

Can you comment on life outside of med school? Are you able to have a life and use sport passes or do anything else besides study? Anything you don't like about A&M?

Yeah I study about 2-3 hours a day and I'm pulling pretty high grades. On test weeks I study much more though. You can study as much or as little as you want, but you will have time to go workout, watch movies, spend time with your significant other, play video games, etc. The med students get tickets together for games. M1 year is not as bad as M2 or M3 year.

I didn't like splitting the classes first year and I didn't like having to drive to undergrad campus to go to anatomy lab, but your year is changing so you guys will all be together first year and you get a new anatomy lab on the HSC campus. I'm kinda jealous how much more perks you guys are getting than us.

How do you feel about the student atmosphere? I know every school swears that they have the most collaborative student body and no one feels competitive etc etc, but I was just wondering what your opinion on all of it is. Do people all hang out with each other or do people tend to stick to a specific friend group? Thanks for your input!

It's kinda hard to say because I don't know the atmospheres at other schools. But we help eachother out, we have a google drive with a lot of stuff on it, people post review stuff in the facebook group, and you can always ask anyone to clarify something or get some notes.

Friend wise, people hang out in groups, but peeps post get togethers/movies/activities in the facebook group that are open for anyone to attend. I would strongly recommend you to attend the "disorientation" camp before school starts so you can meet people.
