2014-2015 Texas A&M Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Y'all, in BAMF, my status says:

"Your status will remain Under Review until you are either invited for an interview or your application is released (end of January)."

The "end of January" part used to be in "end of December." This gives me hope. I guess A&M added more interview dates?

Yes. When I called to reschedule, they said that they had January 8th and January 14th Available.

Dr. Diaz said that the next round of prematches will be released next week some time.

That would be pretty awesome. Seems higher than most I've seen on here.

Anybody have the Interview:Acceptance ratio?

The summary of 2014 entering class statistics they give you on interview day says:
Total interviews: 725
Acceptances offered: 285
Applicants matched: 169

I'm not sure how to interpret that with pre-matches, match, and waitlist acceptances given, but US News reports 2014 stats of:
Interviewed: 714
Accepted: 516

Excluding Texas Tech Foster since their class size is only 100, A&M interviews the least amount of people (by over 100), so if you get an interview here that's huge, good luck!

Wouldn't that percentage go down since A&M is interviewing more applicants this cycle?

Saw this post by @vikingsking82 the other day and thought it may be helpful for those of you on the fence comparing/picking schools like I am. Pretty good point since they have residency programs also:

"A&M has a huge advantage since they allow you to rotate in these (plus more):

Houston - #1, #3, #4 best hospitals in Texas (Methodist Hospital, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center)
Dallas - #2 best hospital in Texas (Baylor)
Temple - #10 best hospital in Texas/a top teaching hospital in the U.S. (Baylor S&W)
Round Rock/Austin - two hospitals are both tied at #31 best hospitals in Texas (St. David's Medical Center in Austin and St. David's Round Rock Medical Center)

I actually think this is pretty unique to A&M and a huge selling point, you literally can't rotate in better hospitals. So you'll rotate longer (2.5 years) than most schools in the best hospitals in Texas!"

Assuming this source was used by him. (Thanks for posting @vikingsking82)

@TCU1990 Yep that was the link. Along with rotation hospitals being a selling point, I also think the fact that we're guaranteed to graduate with research/presentation + concentration minor area (since they're part of the curriculum now) will be invaluable when applying to residency.

Who else thinks that offers will go out tonight? (Oct. 15th, Nov. 15th, Dec. 15th?) also I hope they will give out at least a couple more OOS offers!

I sort of doubt it, just because it's a Sunday night. Tomorrow during the day seems more likely if you're going for the whole "15th" things.

Speaking of 15ths,
Anyone else have an II for Jan. 15? How likely do you think one could match on match day, a mere 2.5 weeks later, with such a late interview?

They said they go over your entire application a day or two after your interview and have you essentially ranked. They then go down the list for acceptances I believe.

A&M is pre-matching conservatively this year. They said at my interview day about 50% of the class is filled through the match!

I have a II on Jan 15. I really hope I have just as good of a chance of matching as anyone else. Hope.

Any acceptances or news about next batch? I'm refreshing my email every second now....

Since I haven't seen anyone post anything, I don't think they were released today...it's still possible!...but I would think they'd send them out in the morning/afternoon.
I'm hoping to match as well! It'd make me forget about the final I just took and feel awful about! 🙂

I called A&M at the end of last week and they told me that admission is rolling, so there is no particular date when they send out a batch of prematch offers and we could hear back at anytime. I was kind of confused because that isn't what they said at the interview. The person I talked to on the phone seemed irritated though, so I didn't press further. I hope someone else has better luck contacting them!

For those of you who have pre-matched, did your status on the BAMF portal change shortly before or after getting an acceptance?

Yeah it is super annoying. They made it a point that they were open about their admissions process, but what good is that if they don't stick to what they say?

I emailed The dean of admissions. She said that they do not have a specific date that they will be sending out the prematch offers, but it will be between now and December 23rd :0

I wonder what the hold up is? The committee met Dec 12, so they already have the ranking! They could be waiting for the other schools to send out their pre-match offers to see if more ppl withdraw from the first group?

That's the same response I got when I called, which is also contradictory to what was said at the interviews. :/

I would imagine that they should all be out before (or at the latest) the beginning of next week though. It's getting pretty close to the holidays.

Do OOSers get waitlist info the same day as IS? Like after match?

Judging from past threads, I think so.

Well, I think tomorrow is the most likely day to hear from A&M. After that it starts getting really close to Christmas.

It has to be today if it hasn't happened already. They said at my interview date they'll be out starting the 22nd for the holidays.

Don't get your hopes up. They've pretty much ignored everything they've said about prematches recently.

I could see that happening. UTMB and UTSW gave out another batch of prematches yesterday. I don't know if any other Texas schools did. I only know about those two bc of a friend on FB got matched there 🙁

Does anyone know how the OOS spots are filled relative to the IS spots? Do they fill them first, towards the end, or randomly throughout the cycle? The reason I ask is because they never fill all 20 OOS available slots.

I know it makes me sound like a slacker, but could a someone please elaborate on which classes students are required to attend and which classes have optional attendance.

Here’s what I was told from a current student:

“generally speaking: Labs, clinical correlation lectures, and the weekly "Intro to Clinical Skills" and "Becoming a Physician" classes are mandatory. Tthis week I have 4 "mandatory" classes for a total of around 10 hours.” The nonmandatory classes (which constitutes most classes) are all video/audio recorded.

Though our schedule may be slightly different, as an example, here is a sample schedule of the current M1’s schedule for both core principles of medicine in yr 1 and cardio block in yr 2:

Here’s a sample schedule for 2015-2016 that our class will use:

So basically even IF you go to every class (mandatory and not), you’ll be done by noon 3/5 days, and done by 4 M/W since you’ll still have lab those days.

Their offices close today in like 5 minutes. I hope that they will send out the next batch soon! Maybe even at midnight tonight!!! CroSs those fingers!!
