2014-2015 Texas Tech University - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am from Lubbock and go to UT Austin. I have received 6 interview invites—including UTSW and Baylor—yet Tech is the only school I haven't heard back from. They received my secondary app on 7/18. I don't understand their selection process because I do have West Texas ties, strong ones. My mother was a nurse at Tech for many years. Oh well, it just sucks because it would be nice to have going home for medical school as an option.
With your numbers, in no way do you need to write your chances off yet. Interview invites can go into December so this is way too early to fret. Congrats on your other interviews!

Any tips for folks with Oct interviews? I won't be able to make the coffee social, unfortunately, so any interview advice from current and/or prospective students would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

The interviews here are relaxed and nothing to worry about.

How are Yall traveling to tech? I'm thinking about taking a plane but it's so expensive. And a bus trip will take 10 hours from houston 🙁

You drive it! It's a little over ten hours from where I am on the southern border of Texas.

Long road trips are the best!

I was only coming from Dallas and it was about a 6 hour drive and I dang near died falling asleep driving back after the long interview day. If you have the money, I'd def recommend flying

My School Rank Preference finally showed up on tmdsas for this school. I interviewed on Sept 5 just fyi. So hopefully the problem is fixed for everyone now

Can anyone who has interviewed comment on the agenda? I'm trying to book my flight for an interview on October 31st and I wanna leave the same day with a flight at 6:55pm. Would that be cool? Thanks!

you would have PLENTY of time. We were done at 1 or 130...

Yes, that is plenty of time, they get done by 4:15pm and the airport is 15-20 minutes away if you have your own car. They also drop off interviewees at the airport which may take a little more time but 6:55pm would still leave you with a lot of time to spare.

Thanks!

What are applicants' and current students' thought on doing the MD/MBA or waiting until later on in training to do an MBA?

Does anybody know the exact breakdown # of students who will complete years 3-4 in each of Lubbock, Amarillo, and Odessa out of the total 180?

I think about 100 stay in lubbock and 40 each go to the other campuses! They just added more residency spots here in Lubbock this year at a separate hospital. Good luck guys!

Did anyone else have the bug that had the red exclamation point at the bottom of their application status page that said you were missing things (but weren't actually missing anything?) I called in about it about a month ago, then followed up last week since all my stuff has been in since beginning of August and they told me it was a bug in their system and it was all received. However, I logged in today and saw that my status changed on the bottom to: Application Complete (Green check mark) Completed: 10/10/2014. Just wondering if this could mean they finally fixed the bug, or if they finally got through my file. I'm crossing my fingers for an II! :xf:

For people who recently got an ii, what dates did yall get? early Novemberishh?

The exact same thing happened to me! they told me on 9/18 that it was a glitch but that my application was in the "screening process" not quite sure what that means though...

Mine showed up in about a week, so I think it's being fixed.

Can IS FMAT applicants hear back as of today? Or do they have to wait until regular pre match?

Just to be clear, regular MD applicants definitely can't hear back until November 15 at the earliest? Acceptances now are for OOS, FMAT, and MD/MBA only?

The exact same thing happened to me. I called their office probably around 10 times over a month and a half trying to fix it and get rid of the red exclamation mark, but they said it was just a "glitch" in their system and that my application was complete and under review. Two months and three days after my I submitted my completed application, they marked my application as complete with a green check mark on 10/10/2014. Everyone at the front office has insisted that we are fine. However, after talking to some other students, too, I have a feeling that this isn't the case.

It's just my hunch, but unfortunately for us, I think that this glitch delayed the evaluation of our applications by 1 or 2 months, depending on when you originally submitted. Despite what the front office told me, I think the red exclamation mark on our app electronically flagged our applications. I have discussed this issue with other TTUHSC faculty and physicians and they think this is the case, too, unfortunately, and ultimately I believe that it their collective concern that led to a resolve of this issue - albeit a very late resolve.

Just out of curiosity, but when did you two take your MCATs? Everyone I know that this has happened to, including me, took a little bit later MCAT. I took mine in June. I think the glitch (that I think they have now fixed) had to do with submitting an MCAT score onto your app after you had already submitted the primary TMDSAS application. For whatever reason, I think that TTU didn't realize you had a valid MCAT score on your app unless it was already loaded onto your primary app upon submission.

Anyways, I really hope that this funky little glitch doesn't cost us our chances here, but I think there there is at least a chance that it did, unfortunately. Sigh. Glad to know I'm not alone, but I'm sorry to hear that this happened to yall, too. Such a silly and potentially unfair thing to have happened during an already stressful time.

The same exact thing happened to my friend last year, and he never got an interview at TTU Lubbock despite having a 3.9 and a 35 and being a TTU undergrad -- a school which has historically given a very large preference to their undergrads. This year, he did indeed get an interview at TTU Lubbock and he swears that it was their weird electronic glitch in their system that prevented the evaluation of his application. In fact, last year during the last cycle, Texas Tech emailed him in May saying they never got a completed application from him, despite the fact that he had completed everything and had received interviews at multiple other schools in the state. He had that exact same red exclamation mark on his seconday app.

Funny you say that, because I had a late Mcat as well and the exact same thing happened to me. I have IIs at every Texas school except TTU-Lubbock, so it's possible that this indeed affected how our apps are being reviewed.

I was transmitted late July- 4.0 GPA, 31 mcat. I have experience in hospital administration, so I'm really interested in getting my MBA so I put down that I was interested in the MD/MBA program. Since there has already been pre match offers to those that also applied to this program, can I consider my self silently rejected?

Interview on Friday! If I applied for yhe FMAT program am I just interviewing for that or is it still possible to be accepted into the regular MD program if not the FMAT? Anyone know the statistics of applied/interviewed/accepted to TTU?

Man that's super disheartening! Is there anything that can be done now to make sure that we can get looked at? I took the MCAT early June this year. Schools overall have been super quiet for me and it makes me worried that things like this are happening.. Maybe we can call and double make sure that everything looks good on their end? I don't want to get looked over just because of a glitch that wasn't my fault. I guess I'm okay with having them look at me late -- I think my scores are well enough to compete. Better late than never I guess!

Hey y'all. I had the good fortune of interviewing at TTUHSC on September 19. Since then i've also been to UTMB and UTHSC-San Antonio. I was wondering if anyone could offer their opinions on how the ranked these schools compared to Tech. Lubbock is really not much of an issue for me as far as location. Also being one of a very small number of black students at TTUHSC is not a significant concern yet for me. I'm hoping that great opportunities at the HSC could possibly overshadow these aspects of my decision. What all do your prefer about TTUHSC over the other schools? Thanks in advance.

Personally, I loved TTUHSC Lubbock but I loved UTMB more and UTH was cool too so I rank it under those two but above the others I interviewed at (uthsca, tamhsc, el paso).

I personally did not like UTMB's interview day. Mandatory PBL and curved grades did not appeal to me either. I still do not believe that UTMB has fully recovered from Ike based on what I saw. As far as ranking of the schools go, I would venture the notion that any Texas school is solid and rank should be based on how successful you think you will be at a given school. I was torn between Houston and Lubbock (and many would claim Houston would be the preferred school over Lubbock), but I felt I would have better academic performance at Lubbock and am quite excited to begin in Lubbock. UTHSCA, if I am not mistaken, recently transitioned to 1.5 year BCM approach to basic sciences. From what I have been told by active medical students, new curriculums take a few years to iron out their wrinkles. UTMB and Lubbock have similar curriculums (no mandated PBL) that are well established. That notion is more appealing to me than a novel 1.5 year basic science approach.

Just a correction: UTHSCSA has had a new 20 month preclinical curriculum for a few years now and their board scores did not drop during the switch.

I haven't seen any posts on OOS acceptances yet which is quite surprising compared to last year's thread. Are there really no OOS acceptances yet?
I have heard of two OOS acceptances from my undergrad, idk if if they applied to dual programs or the FMAT program though.

Thanks for responding. I agree with you totally on UTHSCSA. Besides its location and the shortened pre-clinical years, I'm not sure UTHSCSA offers a more unique education than Lubbock or UTMB. What do you mean by "mandatory" PBL at UTMB vs. Lubbock? I was under the impression that both schools require PBL participation.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you love more about UTMB that you did not love at Lubbock? For me, I feel like the location is the major difference but I would like to focus less on that until I've educated myself on all other aspects of the schools

At UTMB, when I interviewed, PBL was required two or three times a week for both MSIs and MSIIs for two hours, either before class or after class. By required, I mean an attendance requirement similar to high school. From what I have been told by current Tech students, Tech certainly offers PBL but does not enforce its participation under the threat of formal disciplinary action. Some people like group learning; I personally do not benefit from that type of learning model.

Just back from my interview: the school was great! Everyone was really friendly and the interviews were very conversational and laid-back. I could definitely see myself going to school there. 🙂

If anyone has any questions about the interviews let me know!

I guess I just liked the campus feel of UTMB--the way there were a bunch of buildings integrated within historical houses, the hospitals, etc. Also the fact that UTMB is the oldest med school in Texas made the whole place feel very established. Galveston itself contributed to how I felt there;outdoorsy, small but concentrated. Not sure if any of that helps you...
