2014-2015 The Commonwealth Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@peanutsnjuice @mmzy @farnell Did you guys hear anything back today?

It seems like most of the people who were on differed list or at least the ones posting about it on SDN have been simply transferred to Alternate List, which is apparently ranked. So I'm guessing if someone withdraws their acceptance from here an out..they will start pulling people from Alternate list based on their rank.
So I didn't receive any email, nothing about an alternate list....which I guess means they've come to final decision for me - bout time! For those curious, I interviewed early October and have been deferred since November. Hoping the decision will be good news....

This is new for them correct? It seemed like in previous years mid-april was the date for an alternate list.

I didn't get that email, so I guess it is time for the final decision...😱

Gonna feel like a long wait to hear from them. I'm hoping they tell us before the weekend!

I'm the same boat as you are. Hoping for a miracle here.

I didn't get an email yet so I guess this means they have made a decision?! God I hope it's a good one.

*Apparently they have rejected after deferrals in the past so now I'm more nervous.*

I'm thinking about withdrawing my "alternate list" status. Maybe it will go to someone else. Good luck!!!

I was also alternate listed. I interviewed on the very first day of interviews in September.

If we haven't gotten the alternate list email nor the background check email, it is likely a rejection then, right?

Tough to speculate. Last year they accepted a fair number of deferred people throughout the cycle. This year that hasn't happened. Last year the waitlist came out in mid april, this year late march. So they're really not following their old trends...

Also no one on here received an acceptance yesterday either (last year there was a few acceptances mixed in with the waitlist notifications I believe, so perhaps they've broken that trend as well?). So its quite possible that they still haven't sent them out.

I'd be pretty shocked if they straight rejected me. My faculty interviewer and I hit it off and I really enjoyed our conversation. My student interview could've been better but I still thought it was pretty good. Getting waitlisted after a pretty good interview would be understandable, but getting straight rejected would be very very confusing. 😕

Guess we just have to wait it out!

My interviewer straight out told me that he thought I'd get in. He shook my hand and said he looked forward to working with me. So getting rejected after that is going to hurt.

Hmm @JaneAustenFan any speculation on your interview?

It seems both mmzy and I felt our interviews went really well (mine wasn't quite that strong, but she did give me a fair amount of praise and really connect well with me on an ideological level.)

This wait is going to kill me 😛

My faculty interview went very well; I thought they paired me with him on purpose, because his area of interest and mine matched and it is relatively specific. The student interview went okay; we ran out of time and continued the conversation in the hallway on the walk back to the waiting area. Also, he was a non-traditional student with a similar background and route to medical school as myself and I could relate to him well. I inquired, and there was no pairing so I guess I got lucky.

I am in the same position! I did not receive an alternate email. I have been deferred since December and had a great interview with both but especially with the physician. He told me some great things and how shocked he was that I interviewed at 2 schools the previous year and did not get accepted because I interview so well (I don't think he knew that my stats are well below the average of any school which has prevented me from gaining acceptance I believe so I am now considering special masters programs). We had great conversation, but I just figured I'm getting rejected due to my stats. So I wouldn't be surprised if I did not get in based on that, but it wouldn't be because of the interview.

Details please!!

Sorry guys busy on my phone calling everyone. Email. Interviewed in march (10th i think). Really nice acceptance letter. I'm a late applicant (primary verified in late sept (like the 29th) and then secondaries submitted in mid october). LizzyM is really high (78.5), I'm oos but not from too far away. Also an avid outdoorsman so the area was such a good fit for me, I'm almost positive it played a role.

Good luck, I hope this means good news for all!

Did anything in the application portal change at all?

Do the acceptances roll out throughout the day or do I basically assume its a rejection now?

I've no idea honestly.

My acceptance email had a slightly personalized letter (first paragraph was personalized, alluded to the parts of my app that were key in my acceptance). So it is certainly possible that they may take time to send them out.

I'm pulling for all you guys!

Wow congrats!! Especially with such a late interview! Your a BOSS 🙂🙂🙂🙂 If you dont mind can you share your stats?

Yeah I'm a bit atypical with my app this cycle. Applied late because I was planning on two gap years to do research, then my research prof moved. So i applied in sept and was complete in oct. I had mediocre clinical exposure on my primary but volunteered throughout the year to bring that up (and this was mentioned on my secondaries and interviews). I also have extensive tutoring and teaching backgrounds, by matriculation I'll have somewhere around 2000+ hours of teaching experience. I have a few other activities sprinkled in there too. Reason I got away with such a late app -- I have high stats. 3.95 gpa and a well balanced 39 Mcat. I'm very lucky in that regard...

best of luck!

Well I'm gonna assume rejection at this point. Good luck to all those on the wait list

I was deferred in February's and havent heard anything else. Does anyone know if they do rejections by snail mail?

I called because I am nosey and I hate surprises. Admissions says that they are still sending out notifications, and that everyone will receive notice of their status within a week or so.

Got my financial aid award notification today! So exciting to see how much debt I get to build up!

How did you log in to see your financial aid award? Did you get an email asking you to set up your username and password beforehand?

Same here. I was lucky not to have to take out loans in undergrad and I was naively unaware that a financial "aid" "award" = loans that I have to pay back. For some strange reason I assumed the words aid and award indicated that I was getting free money. Boy was I silly.

I got an email a week or so ago giving me my empower log in info. The award letter is on empower

@doggieblaze

They sent us an email a little while ago with a username and password to log on to the student network. It was my first initial and last name plus a password of their making. That worked to log me in.

@CharmanderMD and @emraldragon

Thanks, I called since they never sent that email. Bummed it's not exactly an "award." Well, I wasn't expecting anything from a school with minimal funding.
I think massive debt is just part of going to med school unless you're fortunate enough to have a cheap state school. Unfortunately, Pennsylvania doesn't have any so crippling debt, here I come!

I ended up with a small need-based scholarship, but it would only really put a small dent in my loans. I guess it's still something to be grateful for, though 🙂

Snail mail rejection today. Interviewed Oct, deferred Nov. All the best to those still waiting.

I also didn't receive an alternate list email last week, and I was deferred in January. I'm worried that my rejection letter is on its way. Does anyone know if they send out acceptances via postal mail? I was reading the forum for last year and it looks like someone received a late acceptance through mail.

Received rejection letter today, bummer. I hope a lot of you guys still waiting get accepted!

alternate list too, deferred in february
