2014-2015 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Have you heard anything back about your tattoo? I know that they have changed the policy several times in the last 18 months. Thanks.

I haven't, but mine is completely covered in every uniform, including PT gear, and is smaller than all of the size limitations have ever been. I'm also already active duty Navy so I think the rule changes potentially affect me differently? Sorry 🙁

For those of you who have gone through the waiver process. Is the waiver email that is sent to you by Ms. Ramseur just a generic form? If so, is someone willing to send me that template? You can PM me if you're willing and I will send you my email. I recently received the DQ letter. I have called and emailed Ms. Ramseur numerous times and she hasn't responded. I want to get this process started ASAP. Thanks for your help!!!

I just got put on hold today. Any idea how that has played out in the past?
Hope your application season is going well! I know they get through most of the primary waitlist for Army and Air Force, but last year I don't think they ever got to the hold list.

I've been following this post since the single digits but didn't make an account until recently. I'm active duty Army currently waitlisted at USU on the Army waitlist and cautiously optimistic about the waitlist movement. I'm just wondering if you had seen any stats on the movement or were you just told when you talked to admissions?

I have heard from multiple people including the admissions staff that they almost go through all of the waitlist for Army and Navy. I also saw on the 2013-2014 thread that there were 50 people on the Army and Air Force waitlist. I was accepted off the Army waitlist back in late January! Send me a PM if you have anymore specific questions.

I am beyond ecstatic to report that my husband got "the call" from Dr. Saguil today! He was on the AF wait list, so we are 99% certain it's an AF slot, but in all the excitement, he forgot to ask...haha. So he will call back tomorrow to double check. His physical is complete & he already has a security clearance, so we should see the unconditional offer in the mail soon! This is my husband's #1 choice - he looks forward to meeting you all soon! And I hope to meet some other spouses as well. 🙂

I know COT for AF starts 29 June. Is that when they first put you on Active Duty? Or is there any chance of going to DC first and then TDY to COT? Just trying to figure out for moving reasons. Also, when do you actually take your commissioning oath? I would love to commission my husband, but I have no idea how that piece works for USUHS. Thanks for any insight!

@Premedspouse Congrats to you and your husband! Uh...so in regards to your question I really don't have a good answer but I would highly recommend he join the Facebook group "USU Class of 2019". Plenty of current students there that can answer basically any question.

If you are/was an officer in the US military you can administer the Oath/commission him as soon as you guys get the paperwork in the mail 🙂 Otherwise I'm assuming he'll take the Oath at COT.

I will definitely point him in that direction on FB.

Great! Yes, I am an active duty officer, so we were hoping it was something I could do. 🙂 Thanks for the info!

From what they said on interview day, most of those questions can be answered by your husbands brigade commander.

I cannot answer with 100% certainty but I believe you have Navy and Air Force mixed up. There was very little Navy waitlist movement last year as I understand it.

You're right @Glycereine! Sorry about that. It's Air Force and Army where a lot are accepted off the waitlist. Thanks for clearing that up 🙂

He verified this morning - it is an AF slot!

Can @Glycereine or someone else speculate as to why there is less Navy waitlist movement? Thanks!
From the 2013-2014 thread it was reported that there were 80 people on the Navy waitlist. I would guess that since more people want to be on the navy waitlist, that less people give up their spots.

Can @Glycereine or someone else speculate as to why there is less Navy waitlist movement? Thanks!

I'll add that in addition to more people being on the waitlist, the Navy does not have as many seats as the Army. In my opinion, the Navy has better duty locations...not that it has any bearing on what people choose seriously, but I would consider it. ;-)

Hey guys, regarding the background check, do they notify you when you're cleared, or stay silent unless there is a problem? Thanks!

They do a preliminary screen when you interviewed at the school. A computer check with whatever major database they have access to to make sure you are who you say you are.

Better uniforms. Hands down. No debate. 🙂

Better locations in general. As my mentor said to me once, "Joining the Navy means your girlfriend will follow you."

You get to work with Marines.

Wait are you asking for a serious speculation?...

This is correct. They (the security office at USUHS) will not contact you unless there is a problem.

Haha thanks for sharing @Red Lobster Actual

I know the appeals of the Navy - that's why I selected it as my top USU choice and why I also have the Navy HPSP as a back-up. But I'm wondering if there's any explanations aside from the appeals for there being less waitlist movement...

Not really sure, aside from the most direct answer of most people that join USUHS with the Navy really really want it.

If this has been answered before, apologies, but does anyone know about switching from Army to Navy pre-matriculation?

Yes! Since December.
I would find it hard for that to happen. There's a bunch of people who preferenced Navy and are sitting on the waitlist. Your acceptance was based on your service choice not the university at-large. I know it's not your intention, but getting accepted for Army then asking to switch to Navy seems like you're trying to pull a bait and switch.

Then again I don't know s**t. Best to just call Dr. Saguil and get the answer straight from the horses mouth.

You're probably right about their policy. Had originally ranked both of them equally. And it does seem like a bait and switch at this point.

On a side note Dr. Saguil has been one of the most reachable assistant deans I've met throughout this cycle.

In general it seems as others have mentioned that the people who choose Navy really want to go Navy so less back out. It does seem weird and unfortunately hamstrings those of us that don't have a choice.

My release paperwork wasn't finalized until Navy was full so I never even had a shot at being accepted prewaitlist. Unfortunately that's something active duty have to deal with.

i was hoping to hear back today from the jan 22 interview but i guess not 🙁

Hey @BlueMax, it looks like you and I were in the same interview group. Were you told that we might hear back today?

I just sorted through my USUHS e-mails and the interview invitation states that applicants with a January interview may hear back within 8-10 weeks. This week is our 7th week post-interview, so it's getting close. Hang in there, and best of luck to you! It would be great to get some news soon.

I just saw that the jan 8 and 15 interviewers heard back 2 weeks ago which would have been less time than the 8-10 weeks as stated in the email. Hopefully next week!

Just got my letter in the mail.

Moved from hold status to ON THE WAITLIST!! Army was ranked #1 with Navy and Air force equally placed at #2 (out of 5)

In a difficult situation now as I just sent in my HPSP application for a school where I'm already accepted. If I accept HPSP I can't back out if I get into USUHS. It's very tempting to turn down HPSP should I get it and pray for USUHS. I'm dubbing it the "$200,000 gamble"

Depending on why you were placed on hold this might be a good or bad decision. If they were just waiting for something from you then that's one thing, but if your record put you on the fence that would mean you are probably near the bottom of the list.

I won't recommend anything, but I personally would not turn down HPSP unless I already knew I was in a USUHS.

It was definitely my record. My stats/resume are very average, interviews went reasonably well (from what I can tell). I'm most likely at the bottom of the wait list.

However, I love USUHS so much more than the school where I'm accepted and would be distraught if I got in off the wait list only to be committed to the other school/HPSP. I may have lightheartedly said it's the $200,000 gamble, but it's not the money. It's about being happy, or in the worse case scenario, being happy in knowing that I didn't close the door prematurely.

I can definitely understand that. And I didn't take the 200k part that seriously 🙂. I just wouldn't want you to not get accepted and have turned down HPSP 🙁

You get to become a physician, you get to do it free of cost, and you get to serve your country. From my seat you got it made in the shade. Congrats and good luck!

i was hoping to hear back today from the jan 22 interview but i guess not 🙁

One of my husband's classmates interviewed on Jan 22nd and he received his notification last week (Mar 13th)...unfortunately he was rejected. So maybe it's a good thing if you haven't heard yet. I'm sure it's coming soon! Good luck!

Did anyone else have trouble with their 5512/base access form and have to go to the ID Office the morning of their visit? I interviewed before they started requiring them, and just got notice that my guest's wasn't able to be processed, so I'm trying to figure out exactly how early we're going to need to arrive on base to get that taken care of.

Looking forward to seeing some of you on Friday!

Yep, I just got notice our base access forms couldn't be processed either. In my email they said not to get there any later than 7am because it can take up to 2 hours for them to process us.

Yup, mine said the same; wish I knew what it was that couldn't go through. I was just wondering if anyone had done it on interview day and knew if it was a "real" 2 hours. I was planning to get there no later than 6:30am to make sure we're not late. Guess I'll see you bright and early in the ID Office!
