2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is now a cool Curriculum Blueprint dated 12/30/14 that shows Step 1 after rotations. I think the calendar starts in 2016, implying that this won't go into effect for the next entering class. (It says "Click to Enlarage" [sic], but that doesn't seem to work so the writing is very hard to read.)
Update: The page has been corrected (both the coding and the spelling 😉) and the full chart is now visible. It definitely starts in 2016 like @pyrrion89 confirmed. It also starts in early August, a month earlier than this year's entering class will.

By the way, here is the academic calendar for next year.

anybody know when those who interviewed in early Jan will hear back?
I don't think there's anyway to know for certain. It seems like they're accepting, waitlisting, rejecting, and also just leaving people hanging. I interviewed in Nov. and it's been all quiet on western front, though I think many people who interviewed in December have heard one way or another.

Waitlisted back in December, but I get a letter in the mail from UCSF today asking me to sign up for MyAccess so I can apply for financial aid. Ugh, why are they bringing my hopes up??

Got the same letter. My understanding is that this is fairly typical for waitlists - in the case that you get accepted later on, you'll have all your paperwork ready rather than trying to get it done in that ~2 week window.

Have any accepted ppl gotten an email about MyAccess?
I haven't been accepted or waitlisted, but I did just receive a letter (by mail) today requesting I set up my account. It scared the living crap out of me - thought I had been rejected right after my interview.

I think I got that too. The one that starts "Thank you for applying for admission to UCSF?" Still no email about financial aid, though.

In the same boat, interviewed in November.

Waitlisted in December and just got the financial aid letter today (postmarked Jan 29th though, so it must have taken a little while to mosey on down to SoCal). However, I'd gladly trade this finaid letter for an acceptance notice. Any takers?

A little confused by the instructions. Does UCSF require the CSS Profile (with parental info) to be completed for grants/scholarships?

They require the FAFSA, the CSS profile for both parents, and the survey on MyAccess (all three for full scholarship consideration, I believe).

Yea. For full fin aid you need

FAFSA
UCSF online survey
regular CSS profile
NCP CSS profile
Tax returns from you and both your parents (note: if you or parents did not file, they have special forms you can fill out)

Thanks for sharing. Last detail I forgot to ask. Are you OOS? I am and I feel like they may be taking more time with our apps compared to IS applicants.
Whoops, didn't see this question. I'm in state 🙂

Anybody know how many people get waitlisted overall?

They told us on interview day that of the ~500 interviewees, 1/3 get accepted, 1/3 get wait listed, 1/3 get rejected. Approximately half of the wait list ends up receiving an invitation to matriculate.

Does anyone know when the White Coat ceremony is this year? I couldn't find anything on-line...

Houston, we have a planner.

If you just want to know when school starts, I posted the academic calendar not long ago (on mobile now or I would link again).

Hi All,

I've been reading a lot of posts here on SDN but I haven't really had much to add until now.

Unfortunately I just received a post interview rejection email from UCSF. I'm so so sad. I guess words cannot describe it when the one you love doesn't love u back.

I realize how melodramatic this may sound to a lot of you, but this was my #1 choice and incidentally also my only interview thus far. This late in the game I'm wondering if I may even get anymore chances.

And for the curious, my LizzyM score is 76. I'm from Cali and I applied to about 30 schools.

I'm sorry to hear. I know how upsetting it can be- I've been there with another school. If you don't mind me asking, did you happen to interview in January?

Yes, I interviewed min January. Are you waiting for your post interview answer?

Btw, sorry for my emo rant earlier everyone. I was just so devastated after my rejection email.

I wish everyone accepted to UCSF and everywhere else the best of luck!

I feel your pain- had a lot of rejection this cycle, and have learned to try not to take it personally. I am awaiting a response as well... Just wasnt sure about the time we'd hear back. It sounds like some jan applicants are hearing back but then others say we may have to wait til end of feb/March

Anybody else hear news?

Was waitlisted yesterday, interviewed in November. Very bummed to hear that I'm just gonna have to wait a lot longer to hear, lol. Does anyone know when movement typically comes to the waitlist?

Last year, the first post-waitlist acceptance reported on SDN was 5/16, which means that people will probably start hearing back soon after the April 30 deadline.

Sorry for all of you wait-listed or rejected. When I got the W/L, I was heartbroken. But now I'm an MS-1 here. UCSF pulls a lot of people off the waiting list, so if you're still eager to attend and were wait-listed, I suggest writing a very brief letter saying you are still interested. If you have any major updates, feel free to briefly add those too!

Things seem to be moving fast at UCSF's hospitals.

The Mission Bay hospital opened last week.
With 40 ambulances, approximately 300 UC San Francisco staff and faculty, as well as 100 emergency medical services personnel, UCSF Medical Center on Sunday, Feb. 1, safely transported 131 patients to the new UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay from its Parnassus and Mount Zion campuses.

And a UCSF alum (and resident) and her husband just donated a ton of money to revamp, and rename, San Francisco General. (@Satire5Texul first posted this on Pre-Allo.)
The San Francisco General Hospital Foundation says the couple's $75 million gift is "believed to be the largest single private gift from individuals to a public hospital in the United States."

Is this the women and children's medical center? I'm really excited to see it. I saw the plans for the patient rooms, and they were BEAUTIFUL!
Yes, women's and children's hospitals, plus a cancer hospital. Looks like yesterday they got another $40 million from a Silicon Valley person (not married to a resident this time) for the outpatient part of it.

Interestingly, a resident there told me that while the patient rooms were indeed beautiful at the new hospital, she didn't think there would be enough space or computers for house staff.

Not much space in SF in general, haha. I'm surprised they found room to build a new center. Are you starting there next semester as well?

The funny thing is there is quite a lot of acreage at Mission Bay despite the overall city crowding. Mission Bay is the last frontier of development, as it used to just be an industrial/shipping warehouse wasteland that's been gentrified out. Now it's all social media tech/biotech firms, UCSF, and uber-rich postmodern townhouses, with more room to build. There is some hubbub that some of the docs at the new hospital are using cubicles and don't have offices, probably because the hospital allotted a lot more space to gargantuan patient rooms, maybe at the expense of doctors' offices.

getting antsy! Interviewed in Jan and awaiting that email...just hoping it's a positive one!

Apparently, this is a change from traditional offices starting with the new 118 million dollar Faculty "Office" Bldg 25A across the street from the Mission Bay medical center. It incorporated "Activity-Based Workplaces", a modular open air workstation (or cubicle) with "Focus Rooms" for private meetings. Before the bldg, many faculty and physicians at Mission Bay (and now the medical center) were scattered in leased office spaces. The design team and UCSF considered traditional offices, but were concerned that the space limit would be quickly reached after move-in, along with the political nightmare of who got an office and who didn't. They felt this concept was "creative and inspiring" encouraging open communication among those using the stations. Guess the same concept was incorporated at the new medical center.
