2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That I was maybe missing an essay or something....this means I can pretty much submit if I leave it blank. Def one of the easiest secondaries.

True. But if you have something to say, like something you've been doing since the submission of your primary, I'd definitely put it in. SF doesn't want you to kiss up to them, but you should give them as much info that positively adds to your application as you can. You have nothing to lose but an interview invite!

I'm gonna expand upon one of my activities. I submitted my primary 23 days ago, and Iv'e been enrolled in summer ochem since then...not sure what else is new that I can add.

You guys think I could update them on my grades there? I got an A in a class since submitting (ochem I/lab)

Secondary received at 6:40 ET OOS, added UCSF to AMCAS on 7/7

Just curious if anyone can verify the secondary preliminary screen post from earlier. Are there really only that many sent out?

Idk really. Seeing so many people get secondaries I can't imagine they only give out 1500.

Does anyone know when medical students usually apply for the UCSF/UC Berkeley MD-MPH program?
On the website, it just says, "There is no admissions process for this program at the time of initial application to medical school."

This is the only school I've seen ask about sexual orientation so far. Do they actually take that into consideration for admissions? Or is it more for statistical purposes? Anyone know? Just curious.

UCSF happens to be in San Francisco. I think they just want to know more because of the large lgbt population. I don't think your orientation matters for admission though

I don't know for sure, but the way the section was introduced on the secondary made it sound like it may be a factor they take into consideration.

Primary verified 7/21, secondary received today 7/24. LizzyM score: 77
I wonder if the screening for secondary was done manually or through a GPA/MCAT cut off filter...

Received secondary today 7/24.

Primary was verified 6/8 so I'm almost certain not a GPA/MCAT cut off; at least in my case.

I just got mine like 10mins ago...be patient...you stats are good. Wonder how many research hours do you have? If anything, maybe they screen for research hours?

I just got the secondary, as I wrote higher up in my last post. Sorry for the confusion ha, I was just trying to answer the GPA/MCAT filter dilemma.

This probably doesn't help, but I'm sure you guys will hear back. Those are some impressive numbers!

Secondary received today, IS, Lizzy M : 73. Primary verified 6/23.

from people who got secondaries last year, if you're out of state and get one, is it still a long shot?

They interview about ~100 out of state so unfortunately it seems like a very very very long shot for me 🙁

Not sure if this helps much, but the MSAR indicates its about 150 out of state interviews. So a little better!

For real though, what are you guys putting in the additional information section? Anything? I could easily expand on diversity, my fit for UCSF, etc. but not sure if that's important enough to bore them with.

I don't know for sure, but the way the section was introduced on the secondary made it sound like it may be a factor they take into consideration. I certainly appreciate the radio buttons UCSF does because in my case they pretty succinctly put a lot of my primary app into clearer context, regardless of any other effects clicking them may have on my application.

I spoke to someone who was involved with this at accepted students weekend this year. It is absolutely not a factor in admissions, it is primarily for statistical purposes. It's difficult to address disparities without being able to measure the number of people applying/accepted before and after interventions. They're hoping that other med schools will catch on and begin tracking this data as well. I am super stoked that UCSF is taking the lead on this issue.

Good luck to you all!

I am new to SDN. This is cool!

My application was verified yesterday and I received an invite to complete the UCSF secondary hours later.

MCAT - 29 (10/8/11)
GPA - 3.9 top university

Perhaps a fluke? I didn't think I would have a chance after getting that MCAT score...

does anyone know if you have to be a cali resident/raised in cali/cali ugrad/cali affiliate etc. to apply to JMP/PRIME? The bios on the website for c/o 2014 PRIME seemed as if most people were cali affiliated in some regard except for one dude. And is there a spanish requirement for UCSF-PRIME?

Having no information is a very scary thing.

I haven't heard anything from this school and that's actually really frightening.

Verified on 7/17 and got a secondary yesterday! OOS applicant here.

With which spreadsheet is everyone checking their LizzyM score? The one I have is from 2012.

Does anyone know how many secondaries are sent to IS vs OOS?

How are people answering the activities question? Is anyone expanding on what they already wrote? I have a pub to add, and I've continued all the things I said I was continuing on my primary. Should I say that I've continued things as expected? Did anyone elaborate on their activities like a most meaningful? If they are going from 1500 to 500, do you think this question is a big factor in that decision, or will it likely lie more in LORs?

I didn't expand much since I submitted my primary June 28 and in didn't have much else to add.

Ya just got secondary!! I was confirmed on 6/3 so I had given up hope. Mcat 34 gpa 3.8 oos. Posting this to give hope to others waiting!

I'm really curious about the system they use to assign secondaries. Based on the posts here, its not due to IS vs OOS, numeric metrics (i.e. LizzyM), or AMCAS verification date. I'm wondering if it has to deal with the applications being sent to multiple groups of screeners who work at different speeds.

I believe that they go through two reviewers. So if one of them says no, another will read it and say if they agree or disagree. Not sure if the second person reads it if the first one says yes. If not, the applications with an initial yes may get them faster. But I think that reviewers with busy schedules are also just getting to them at different times, and this two-step process may contribute to the longer wait for some applicants.

secondary recieved!
verified 6/30
in state applicant, MCAT 34, gpa 3.8

34 mcat 3.78 gpa oos. verified 07/01, I had also given on up hope on vandy and UCSF. The secondaries are still coming- best of luck to all.

What are you guys doing for a photo? I'm debating going and having one taken or just finding one I already have and cropping it.
