2014-2015 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My theory is that verification time has absolutely nothing to do with it as long as it happened before June 27th, when they were sent out to schools... Apps that were verified before that date are sent to the designated schools in one bundle. I was verified on the 26th and got most of my screening secondaries (Vandy, SF, SD, LA) on the first possible day according to this thread.

False- i got verified july 3 and also got uc secondaries on the first day...

Guys, there is no point in going back and forth about their screening system haha. The reason it takes so long is because there aren't specific cut offs by hours or stats or anything. If it was, a simple computer program could do it and secondaries would come out much faster.

Hi guys! I'm applying this cycle, and I apologize if this is a stupid question. In "update/expand activities," is it advisable to use the space to list specific researchers, volunteer opps, etc. at UCSF that interest you? Or is it meant directly as a "what have you been doing since May" type of question? Thank you in advance!

The 2nd one

I believe, it will always be a mystery lol. Maybe they really truly do it holistically. And there's nothing more to it haha
I worked with someone who used to be on their admissions committee. He claimed they truly do it holistically as soon as they receive your primary!
Verified 07/14, received 2ndary 07/28

Hey guys,

I'm a little worried I won't get a secondary from UCSF this year. I'm a reapplicant and due to living and working out of the country last year, I wasn't able to submit my secondary until the deadline on November 15th. My primary was verified on June 3rd with cGPA 3.95, sGPA 3.97, MCAT 35Q, OOS applicant, still no secondary invite. What do you guys think? Am I worrying for no reason?

Thanks

@crd775 that seems strange, especially since you got a secondary last year. Unless you didn't do anything to improve your application in the past year, I'd be surprised if they don't send a secondary your way.

I'd say it's still relatively early and you shouldn't be worried just yet.

I also worked with someone who had ties to adcom and he also claimed it was a holistic screen -shrug-

Of course we have no way to verify their claims so they could be sending out secondaries based on the length of your name, for all we know 😛

Do you guys really feel like they are only going to give out 1500 total.

So I spoke to them earlier today and they sounded as if I should be receiving a secondary and to call back on September 1st if I didn't hear anything. They said not to worry if someone else who had applied on the same day as you received a secondary invite and you didn't. Should shed some hope on some of those who still haven't received one.

Received the secondary today, was verified on 7/18. My last name is in the first 5 letters of the alphabet if that's any indication 😉

What FAQ? I don't see a FAQ site

I don't, either, but I assume UCSF removed it at some point for whatever reason; the FAQ noting "approximately 1500 secondaries given per year" was cited all the way back to the 2007 & 2008 app cycle threads. As of now, the Facts and Figures page on the UCSF website just lists total apps vs. number of interviews vs. matriculants for the last application cycle.

Secondary today!! (OOS 3.77/38) 🙂

My last name starts with a letter at the end of the alphabet, so not sure how they are determining the order that they are sent out.

+1
I had the same theory as well -- but isn't based on much. Received my Secondary today, and I also have a last name close to the end of the alphabet.
IS (3.60ish/36)

I wonder when they will start giving out interviews/rejections? They said they review in 4-6 weeks after I submitted a while ago.

Secondary Received 7/22. AMCAS Verified 6/12. OOS. Non-Trad (barely). sGPA 3.63 cGPA 3.63 MCAT 32

Clearly they do not give out secondaries based on stats alone.

Is anyone else not writing the optional essay? I don't have anything new to add that wasn't discussed on my primary already and I'm feeling a bit worn out from all these other secondaries. Hopefully it won't count against us

3.92 GPA, 38 MCAT, OOS, verified early June...still no secondary 🙁

stats, please?
LizzyM > 70.

Also, guys, I've figured it out: They're sending out secondaries based on the last four digits of our SSNs. But they're first sending them to people whose SSNs end with a prime number, then to those that end with a multiple of two, and finally to the rest of them.

I'm sorry, but I have conclusive evidence that this is not true. Then again, I just might be an outlier based on natural variation.

feels like they are giving out way more secondaries this year

"Eenie, meenie, miney, mo" might also play a role in their process.

Or maybe they use that octopus who predicts soccer games or whatever to slap our primaries with his tentacle if he thinks they should send us a secondary.

Definitely the octopus!

Sorry to break the news but the famous octopus is dead.

I reeeaaalllllyyyy like this image.
"Another long day slapping primaries," he says to his wife as he settles into his Lazyboy Tank after work.
"Were any of them particularly slappable?" she asks, sitting beside him with a glass of brine.
"A few were really satisfying to slap," he says. "But there was one, a real disaster, that I was making sure to avoid when the tip of my tentacle accidentally brushed it. Blueharbor, I think the name was."
"Everybody makes mistakes. Here, have some brine," she replies, and they watch a rerun of a seahorse ballet together.

*Officially the best thing I have read all day.*

Good god I hope we end up at the same medical school.
