Great question. I talked about this with a third year in PISCES when I interviewed, but I forgot what she said!

Edit: This doesn't shed too much light, but I think she did say that there was not enough demand for these programs at their inception, but now there are more people who want in than there are spots.

There's only one school I would MAYBE consider over here. I'm essentially matriculating at UCSF, unless I get really bad vibes from second look weekend.
 
anyone know when those who interviewed in late January will hear back?

I don't remember this being mentioned on interview day. Does UCSF have high/honors pass in addition to P/F?
 
does anybody have any guesses on if the jan interviewees will hear back today/tomorrow?
 
Anyone else join the FB group? This has been my dream school since day 1 of this application cycle. I'm just waiting on the financial aid, but I'm pretty set on matriculating.
 
Just had a thought. What if Dr. Priscilla Chan had been feeling really grateful for her medical training, and she and her husband had decided to donate $200 million or even $225 million directly to UCSF? How would you feel about the Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco? (Facebook Med for short?)

I think it would become more competitive than it already is, because all the business/tech wannabes would switch their sites from Stanford to SF.

I rather them just give UCSF money for better financial aid.
 
They should create a Zuckerberg scholarship and give all incoming students free tuition 🙂 I'd go to The University of Zuckerberg School of Medicine 🙂
 
Just joined SDN, I decided it was too stressful to read while I was an applicant, ha ha. I was accepted to UCSF on Friday. I received a short email (best email of my life, to be honest) and when I log into my status page is now reads this:

Congratulations on your acceptance! We enjoyed meeting you on your interview day and hope to welcome you to UCSF in the fall. Please use the buttons below to indicate whether you plan to accept our offer.

I have a couple of questions. If anyone is able to answer them that would be great!
  • Does anyone know what it means when you click yes? Do you immediately pay a deposit or what happens?
  • Is more information coming in the mail?
  • Is there a deadline for me to accept/decline?

Congratulations Mr. October! If you click "Yes" (or fill in your SSN or whatever it asks you to do), it changes to this:
We are very pleased to receive your acceptance of our offer. We recognize that you are likely to be considering other opportunities as well. If we can be helpful as you ponder your options, please let us know. In this regard, we hope you will be able to attend our Accepted Students Weekend (April 17-18). More information about the weekend will be sent to you in March.

Wow, it's like they can't go a day without announcing another gift from a zillionaire. (This one's fortune comes from duty-free stores? I didn't know people actually bought things at those places. I'm impressed.)

That's a really good question. Dean Wofsy talked about how they try to be the cheapest option for every student at my interview day. But it seems like there are mixed reports out there about how good the aid is. Not sure how to evaluate it until the awards come in.

Congrats Octoberapplicant! I was also accepted Friday and it too was the best short email of my life! 🙂 UCSF doesn't ask for a deposit to hold your seat, which I was very happy to discover after clicking yes!

Wow this is really good news, thanks for sharing. Chuck Feeney seems like such an awesome person.

Lately, UCSF has been good with need based fin aid but I dont think they do much, if any, merit based. Regardless, their tuition is already quite a bit lower. According to this article, however, it seems like they might be having some merit based ones coming up soon 😉

Good question. This part of the process is kinda counter intuitive. It means almost nothing to click accept at this point. It seems like everyone accepts offers from all the schools them makes a final (true) acceptance late in April.

You might get some information in the mail about how to log in to the UCSF account.
 
How important is revisit weekend? I'm on the east coast and it's such an expensive hassle to make the visit
 
Does anyone know if UCSF offers to pay for flights to go to revisit weekend if someone cannot afford it?

Its importance is really up to you. If you are certain you want to go to UCSF, you probably don't need to go. If you are debating between schools, make a list of pro's and con's and unknowns and try to figure out if going to the visit weekend will help clear any of that up. For example, if your concerns are technical, they might be solved by a phone call. If your concerns are about the general vibe of the place and you wanna see if students are happy, then maybe you should go.

The other reason it can be useful would be to find people to live with. However, you should note that there is a facebook page now and you might be able to find people to live with on there.

Personally I think revisit is the most important thing about this whole process. You WILL get a vibe of how the school really is and whether you're a good fit, based on seeing who many of your future classmates will be. Interview day isn't really a good glimpse.
 
Anyone have/know UCSFs most recent match list. I'm just curious as I couldn't really find anything online.
 
Could some of you who got accepted post your stats like mcat, GPA, and ECs, i am applying this cycle and i want to know if i stand a chance.

Did you check msar for stats? ECs vary widely but are consistently good. You could look at MD apps for examples.
I don't want to psych you out or give you a false sense of confidence, so just focus on doing the best you can.

You know, the funny thing is: it isn't until after you go through this process that you finally understand how futile it is to compare yourself to other applicants. And trust me, I did. A LOT. But if I had actually acted based on those conclusions I made, I would not be holding this acceptance right now.

Be honest, be real and believe in yourself. And sure, have the general self awareness to recognize where your application is weak and strong and your overall chances. But honestly, if you think you're a generally stand up guy and feel your strengths way outweigh your perceived weaknesses, then go for it. You'll probably surprise yourself.
