Does anybody know the best places for off-campus housing? Which areas are safe? I heard that neighborhoods west of MLK Blvd aren't particularly safe, but are there any current medical students that can give advice?

I live in Baltimore although I'm still waiting to hear from UMD. The best neighborhood to live in as a student at UMD is Federal Hill. It's one of the safest and most fun neighborhoods in Baltimore (lots of young people/good bars and restaurants), and there's a shuttle that will take you to the med school. I wouldn't recommend living downtown or in the area around the med school as it's relatively unsafe at night (especially around Lexington Market) and the rents are still in the same range as Fed Hill. Mount Vernon isn't bad either (north of the Washington Monument on Charles Street) - it's kind of a long walk though, and I'm not sure if there is a UMD shuttle that goes that way. Fed is your best bet. Do NOT under any circumstances look at living west of MLK.

PS, Fed Hill is defined as the neighborhood south and west of Key Highway, north of Randall Street, and east of Hanover Street. It's all south of Camden Yards and east of M&T Stadium (and within walking distance of both, which is nice).

A lot of students live in The Redwood apartments and Camden Court apartments (Where I live). They are really convenient within walking distance of school and there are many other students from other programs as well as doctors and other professionals in those two buildings. That being said there are a ton of people who live in fed hill and many that live west of MLK. Anywhere you live will have it's inherent dangerous... You're living in Baltimore - Duh haha. Depends what you are looking for as far as where you want to live though.

Thanks so much. That's really helpful. Can't wait to go apartment hunting!

Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely keep those apartments in mind.

I feel the same way too! Interviewed the week after you but so much anxiety every time the mail comes. Foxwell said to expect to hear back 3-4 weeks later so maybe its still early? Anyone else from end of Sept/early Oct who hasn't heard back yet?

Interviewed 10/6 and waiting in silence...I saw one person from 10/6 interview got an acceptance call (congrats!), has anyone else heard anything?

10/1 here. Total silence. I wonder how they process our applications - this out of order thing is unfortunate...

Waitlisted, IS. Interview 10/1

I had a feeling this was going to happen, so I'm not upset. It's hard to say what went wrong because I thought my interviews all went well, but sometimes you just get an overall impression of your results pretty quickly. As the philosopher Jagger said, you don't always get what you want.

Aaaaaand I have another interview tomorrow.... bleeehhhhh. Way to happen the day before!

Waitlisted, IS, first week of Oct. Interview. So bummed! Absolutely my top choice. April is so far away!
How was waitlist movement last year?

I received an interview invite here recently (OOS, LizzyM ~71). The only available dates are in February. I understand that this school interviews until the end of March, and the email didn't state it specifically, but would I be interviewing for a spot on the waitlist? I know some schools start doing that around February. Thank you!

Good luck on your interview! When did you submit your secondary? Thanks

Wait list is a crapshoot. 2 years ago nobody got off of it and last year I got off of the waitlist and I know a few people who did as well. My advice to you would be focus on other schools and plan as if you are not going to maryland. But you never know when you'll get a call in June saying hey wanna come to UMB? Good luck to you though

Just got the acceptance packet in the mail for the MD/MPH program!!!!!! FREAKING OUT!!!!! OOS and interviewed 10/6

Congrats to all on acceptances!

Does anyone know how receptive they are to pre-interview updates? Really shot myself in the foot by submitting so late and want to make sure they know they're a top choice even though I didn't submit the secondary until 9/9.

Anyone else who interviewd on 10/1 and still haven't heard anything?? Getting anxious here...

i saw in the acceptance package that the school purchases laptops for us. Do any current students know what kind it is?..just curious...

They gave us a Lenovo Thinkpad T440s which is in line with what the MS2s got as well. So you'll be getting next years version of that if anyone's curious

Wait-listed today via mail, interview 10/6. Anyone know how receptive they are to updates? This is absolutely my first choice school and if there is anything I can do to help myself out I will

If I've been complete and under reveiw since 9/3 but not heard anything is it safe to say probably a silent rejection?

hey!
to anyone who has already been accepted and has decided to attend Maryland next year. have you guys seen any webpages for accepted students- either on facebook or the maryland website? I'd like to start talking to people about roommates, living situations, etc and I can't find a webpage that's started to connect people.

anyone know of anything? or anyone looking to start figuring out roomates/housing/etc for next year?

I know it says you can't change the interview date..but does anybody know how strict they are towards this?

I wouldnt take a chance. Only for medical reasons or health reasons (not well etc) would they entertain such requests.

Do you think they would be open to a phone call saying that we would be happy to take an earlier date if someone falls out last minute? Febrauary seems so far away

That would be anyone's guess....Doubt if anyone had called in yet with that request...Hey...u wouldnt know till you try 🙂. But is it worth the risk?

I don't think it could hurt to ask! They do have that "don't come if you're sick" part of the email.. So people could drop out last minute.

I haven't seen a group on Facebook or anything.... any luck finding anything yet? I'm pretty sure I will be attending!

I just called and asked. They said no, availability hasn't changed. If you get another person at the office, maybe it will be different.

Rejected via snail mail. They sent me two different letters yesterday and today - is that a double rejection?

Was the rejection letter sent to your permanent address or your current address? Just want to know where I should be looking.. Thank you!

Accepted visit snail mail yesterday for the md/msci program!
interviewed 10/1

So nobody has called to request an earlier interview date with success? it seems like they interview very few people, something around 580 according to msar for last year...and they're already at feb =/

I got a January interview date last week.. They may offer different dates to different people or have January interview dates become available. Hope isn't lost yet!!
