2014-2015 University of Maryland Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
He made me justify wanting to be a doctor because of my gender, suggested alternate careers so I could focus on having babies, and kept saying "you realize this will be hard on your family right?"
That is completely unacceptable. I am so sorry you had to deal with that. You should call the dean directly, or you can send an email if you feel that is more appropriate/comfortable.

I would not wait until after a decision has been made. And I would not worry about anonymity. I would call the dean and stress you really enjoyed your visit at UMD and that his interview did not at all tarnish your view of the medical school, but you are concerned that you will be viewed negatively due to your gender based on the questions asked of you. Let the dean know the line of questioning.

This is just an opinion of how to proceed.

In the same boat and have not heard back yet. Anyone else?

Just heard back, Waitlisted 🙁 🙁 🙁 does anyone know if applying for maryland residency (which I'm sure I can get) will help?

Is there a status change on the portal after you interview?

My status page on the portal still says "Your interview is scheduled on 1/14". Is this normal? Should it say interview complete or app under review?

How were you notified? And I thought Maryland had a strict policy for changing residency???

a friend got an II few days ago, after being put on hold! just thought I'd share for those still waiting and praying. Don't give up hope!

Thank you for the update! I've been on hold for an interview here since november. Do you know if there was anything he/she did to help them get of the pre-interview hold? update letter or call the office?

She sent an update letter to the office. Can't say for sure if it was BECAUSE of the letter, but I do know she sent it! Best of luck 🙂

Can any of the current students share their perspective and opinion on living with students who are in the same year/program as you, as opposed to finding older med students or students at the pharmacy or dental school? My general impression has always been that it can be helpful to live with those going through the same thing as you, but recently some people have been warning me against it, saying that it could be conducive to more stress. If you live with students in the same year as you, has it worked out? Pros/Cons?

I live with two other students in my same class. It really is dependent on how you manage stress and the type of people that you live with. In my situation, I like it.

Pros: If you dont understand something you can easily ask someone, You dont miss any deadlines or forget anything, I like having people going through similar experiences as me because it is easy to relate, Nobody is going out or coming back late at night and waking you up because we are all on the same schedule (It would suck to be studying your life away while your roommate is going out and having fun)

Cons: If you can't handle that knowing someone is studying when you are not, it might not be for you, some people see this as a stressor, Also constantly being around your class can get old so I would say it is important to make friends outside of that group and a roommate might be the answer to that

... That being said you will be studying A LOT! Many people sit in the library for 8 straight hours and study every day of the week, don't get anxiety just because someone is on a different study schedule than you!

Have they sent out any scholarship information yet?

Hi everyone. I made an account just to ask this question. I'm an accepted student who is getting married in the summer of 2016 (late June). I have searched and searched online but have not been able to find an academic calendar for UMd School of Medicine. I just wanted to make sure that there would be no conflict with our wedding date. If anyone knows where I can find a calendar, or if any current students can comment on the first year schedule of years prior, please let me know. Thank you!

Calendar is hard to come by because they post all our notes and lectures on it and they don't want it going public. But we get out second week of may so you should be fine from a class/test standpoint. Many people elect to do research the first summer since you have to do it at some point so you would just have to work that out with whoever you do research with should you decide to do it then.

Hold out hope! I got waitlisted after my Feb 17th interview last year and got a call first week of June to come to MD. Had to drop my other acceptances and scramble for a place to live but It's not over until they tell you no!

does anyone know if this school keeps spots open for people this late in the interview process? I am interviewing tomorrow and I'd like to know if I'm interviewing for an acceptance or waitlist.

a friend of mine interviewed here a few days ago, and apparently at the interview Dr. Foxwell said that they would never waste your time and interview you, if they knew they didn't have a seat to offer. He said that while there are fewer seats to compete for, there is still a seat available for you and the incoming class is not "filled," otherwise they wouldn't invite you just so you could "compete" for a place on the waitlist. That would be senseless.
So while pressure is high, just bring your A-game and treat it like as if the timeline is irrelevant 🙂 if they like you enough... there will be a seat in that class for you. Best of luck!

Well said @dopa-mean . I could not agree more.
@pandoodle whether you get waitlisted or accepted post interview, the bottom line is ... THEY WANT TO MORE MORE ABOUT YOU! You got this! I will pray for you.

Has anyone who was put on hold pre interview heard anything lately?🙁

Been on hold since November with complete silence from UMD. I've basically given up hope for a late II at this point.

Did anyone receive a confirmation after you mailed back your acceptance class reservation forms?

Thanks! Has the school posted the Fall calendar yet? Can you please let me know when winter break is?

Sorry they don't have that available for you guys but for me it was 12/23-1/4. If anyone else has questions feel free to ask it's a nice distraction from studying!

Did you get time off around Thanksgiving? Any other holidays we get off? Thanks for answering!!

Any west coast folks accepted to UMD? I loved this school on interview day but I am concerned about 1) the OOS cost and 2) my ability to eventually come back to CA. I looked at last years match list and the number of people matched to CA is about 3% but I'm not sure if there's a better way to obtain this information. Also, is it easy enough to gain in-state status after a year? If any current students have some insight that'd be lovely!

Thanks 🙂
