2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Still deciding if I should apply here or not. OOS and I want to apply to one FL/CA school, and this might be my best bet. I think the Miami lifestyle might be for me, too! (not that I even really know what it is)

OOS and applying here. Hope to get some love :xf:

OOS and applying here! Good luck everyone 🙂

Aah..the only OOS-loving FL school I'm applying to. Not a lot of sun all year round here in the northeast😎 Best of luck to all of us applying!

What are some of Miller's strong points (aside from having that awesome Jackson Memorial Hospital connection and being in a very diverse city such as Miami)?

Research, early clinical exposure, and very strong departments ie: ENT, plastics. Something to look into considering there's some heavy hitters over there who can write good LORs. Also they just got new faculty who are heavily pushing work with the under served. Applying in state. Love this school. Miami is amazing.

Will speaking spanish at a native level and having a focus on working with underserved Hispanic populations be a bigger advantage here than at other schools because of the extremely diverse population?

Just sliding in to wish everyone luck :luck: UM is awesome...

Yeah, Miami native here. Would be ecstatic attending UM.

I would certainly hope so! I am hoping my language skill/interests help too.

Looking at secondaries from last year... does anyone know character/word limits?

Thanks!

EDIT: Found it on the 2013-2014 page - 500 words or less

Hey guys, best of luck this year! I am a new MD/MPH student and just started classes on Monday. They shared the class profile for our program (MD/MPH) with us at orientation. Just thought I would share the numbers for you applying this year. I love this school and am SO glad I chose UM! I am OOS with a family originally from Utah. PM me if you have burning questions. I will try to respond as soon as I am able 🙂

Average cGPA: 3.64
Average sGPA: 3.54
Average MCAT 32

422 applicants for the dual degree
171 interviewed
48 matriculated

79% of the class is OOS

Wow, so you can apply directly to the M.D./M.P.H. program? This is news to me and I am really interested as I have a background in public health. Do you mind outlining the program for me? Do you have to take the GRE to apply? Thanks!

Hey Sundance,

You do apply separately. When you are filling out your application you will be able to choose one program or the other or you can choose to apply to both. You do not need to take the GRE and the program is only four years. UM makes this happen by having you start early (hence why I am already in medical school classes now) and by having a couple classes double dip for both the MD and MPH degree. The class size for the MD/MPH program is 48 students per year and we hold our classes completely separate from the traditional MD students. Any other questions?

Do we need any specific experiences to apply to the MPH program? Or would you say an interest in Public Health that we can back up is sufficient? Also did you apply to both programs and interview for both? Thanks!

Wow, that's so awesome! Thanks for all the info. I will definitely be applying to the program. Is there a separate secondary and is it as long and painful as the M.D. one?

Here are the prompts from last year! 500 words each I believe.

Please describe any experience you have had in public health - -this could be experience in the field, in training, in education or other related experience.

Please describe how you envision you would use the public health training provided in the joint MD/MPH in your future career as a physician.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your interest in the MD/MPH program?

Can somebody post this year's secondary essay questions? Thanks!!

This year's essays aren't out yet. Here are the ones from the cycle 2013-2014:

500 words or less for each

1. Briefly describe the one clinical experience you have had that has most significantly influenced your decision to study medicine.

2. Why have you selected the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for your medical education? Please be as specific as possible.

3. Please provide a chronological list with dates of your clinical experiences/shadowing.

4. Please provide a chronological list with dates of your community service/volunteering.

5. Please discuss a situation where you had to use your leadership skills.

6. Please briefly discuss your research experience.

7. Please provide a chronological list with dates of your employment.

8. [OPTIONAL] Fine arts descriptions

9. [OPTIONAL] Please provide a description of any activities involving SPORTS (organized team sports, recreational activities that you play, watch or follow)

10. [OPTIONAL] Describe your most meaningful involvement in STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS.

11. [OPTIONAL] Please provide a description of your most memorable TRAVEL experience.

12. [OPTIONAL] Please provide a description of your HOBBIES and what you do for fun and relaxation.

13. Re-applicant?

Assuming that the secondary does not change, what constitutes Fine Arts?

You should look for someway to show experience in public health, but your desire I would say is just as important. Look for anyway to relate your experiences with public health and write about that. I dont think a lack of public health experience would exclude you by itself, but they did say when they were presenting our stats that they threw some applications out because there simply wasn't any public health relation in their application.
I only applied to the dual degree program. I figured coming from Utah the only way to make the big move with it to me was if I had both degrees. If you apply to both programs you will most likely be interviewed by both programs separately. If you are accepted to both programs they will give you like a week to choose between the two.

The prompt asks about educational experiences. Do you think emphasizing the impact of reliving global developments and social courses could be sufficient if spun the right way?

I'm also from Utah, and have thought a lot about MD/MPH programs! Good to know that Public Health experience is helpful as I have a fair amount! I will have to add the university of Miami to my list. Is there an additional yearly cost for the MPH degree? If so what is the full yearly tuition?

Possibly, its most important to be genuine though so if you write it and are not satisfied that it really reflects your desire to pursue the dual program I would scratch that idea and just write honestly that you may have not had much experience but that you are public health minded. You could talk about health disparities you see in your hometown, or even about the ACA and how it makes you want to be involved in or change the healthcare policy of the nation. Whatever avenue you feel is most genuine. Make sense?

No, that is one of the most amazing parts especially for OOSers! The tuition for the program is exactly the same as OOS tuition (which is really low for an OOSer in the first place, only 42k/year) plus it is still only a 4 year program. Its an awesome deal.
You should definitely apply, we need more Utah representation 🙂.

Can I apply concurrently to MD only and MD/MPH?

Just received email they are reviewing my application and will decide if I will receive a secondary application shortly. Looked at their website which indicates most people will receive a secondary.
Thanks for sharing. Did not know UM was going to screen.

Doesn't look like its a difficult screen from their description.

"The Miller School of Medicine has a new policy of sending secondary applications to most US citizens and permanent residents who submit an AMCAS application. It will be the applicant’s decision whether to fill out the secondary application and submit it. In this regard, all applicants should remember that our last three entering classes had an average undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.7, a science GPA of 3.6, and an average MCAT composite score of 32 – 33. To be truly competitive potential applicants should have credentials comparable to those of our most recent classes. Supplemental applications received in the Office of Admissions after January 15th will not be processed."

Yea it doesn't look to bad at all.

Does anyone know if the new prerequisites for this app cycle have to be completed already, or if you graduated and are missing a course or two, you can apply and be accepted and just take the course during the spring before matriculating?
I believe if you missing one or two pre-reqs you can still be accepted with conditions. You will have to complete those courses before matriculation.

In the essay about research experience, would this only really mean scientific research experience? I worked for Morgan Stanley, Grameen Foundation, and Grassroots Business Fund and did a lot of field research for them that I find more significant to my development as an analyst. Otherwise - I did a summer research internship at the National Institutes of Health and I could keep it safe and just write about that. Thoughts?

Do you get this option when filling out your secondary or do you have to list that you're applying to combined MD/graduate on AMCAS?

Does anyone know how the screening process at this school works? is it holistic or based off of numbers alone? i'm OOS so that's another reason why im wondering.

If I remember correctly it is on the secondary.

Hey all, I added Miami to my list of schools last night- glad to be on here with you all! Here's to a great successful application cycle for us!

Something to keep in mind for when you future matriculants are choosing between the two programs: Both MD and MD/MPH spend their first two years at the Miami campus (so most of the early clinical exposure for both programs comes from Jackson). The MD track sticks around Jackson/UM campus for year 3 and 4 as well. MD/MPH moves up north to Palm Beach County to do clinical rotations at JFK Medical Center (located in Atlantis, FL).

I quote Wikipedia for the explanation:

"One of the main reasons for the final two years being in Palm Beach County is that the county has the largest department of public health in the state of Florida and still runs its own public health clinics. This contrasts with Miami-Dade County which long ago contracted out its public health clinics to private companies. This therefore allows MD/MPH students to work in a far reaching public health department and gain first-hand clinical and public health experience in public health clinics."
