2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

Yup, I called and they said the MD/MPH class is full. Waitlist movement will be very minimal, but it does happen.
Did they tell you anything about your individual place on the wait list, ie top third, not a chance, etc.? It's too late for me to call today but I'll call tomorrow if they are telling us about our actual spot on the list.

Unfortunately no. I asked the lady I spoke to and gave her my name, but she said at this time, she couldn't tell me.

Got an email that I was the next person to be offered a spot. Declined it. Good luck to another applicant.
That's interesting that they do this. Guess it saves them the time of not having to send you an invitation to attend school there only to learn you aren't interested. Given how late in the game it's getting, I suspect you're an MD only candidate?

So, I'm an idiot and should've done this earlier. I was accepted into the MD program awhile ago and after freaking out about my finances, I would like to give the diversity scholarship/need-based grant a shot. Does anybody know whether it's too late to apply?

For some reason I thought the deadline was sometime in early May, but looking back at the financial aid website I can't find anything to support that statement. Maybe I'm getting it confused with FAFSA. I would call the financial aid office and ask.

@Moon201111 i emailed Dean Weisman about my position on the WL and he said he doesn't see it moving much more.

Does Miami provide feedback about how we can improve our applications/interview day? I have had two other schools who have provided me with specific feedback on what I can work on and was wondering if Miami does this.

I tried, and received this reply.

"The deadline for us to provide a formal review of last year was June 1 with the beginning of the new AMCAS cycle. I can tell you that your major deficit last year was __________."

Most programs have a very small window for these types of feedback systems and many do not advertise this. You can imagine the flood of emails/calls they would get.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty sure I already know my major deficiency so I won't worry about sending the email.

I called the admissions office last week and they said maybe 2 people were accepted off the waitlist in the past 4 weeks

Hey guys, best of luck this year! I am a new MD/MPH student and just started classes on Monday. They shared the class profile for our program (MD/MPH) with us at orientation. Just thought I would share the numbers for you applying this year. I love this school and am SO glad I chose UM! I am OOS with a family originally from Utah. PM me if you have burning questions. I will try to respond as soon as I am able 🙂

Average cGPA: 3.64
Average sGPA: 3.54
Average MCAT 32

422 applicants for the dual degree
171 interviewed
48 matriculated

79% of the class is OOS
congrats!!!!!

Hey guys, I heard that the Step 1 and Step 2 scores for the first batch of students from the MD/MPH program just came out and they were incredibly high, does anyone mind sharing what those numbers were? I can't remember from my interview (I just remember hearing they were very high).

Actually, the haven't been. If you look at the graph of Step 1 scores for the past few years (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwtE3aqF7tA0WkZ0eXpNTlg4bVE/view?usp=sharing), for the class (both MD and MD/MPH combined) the school's average dropped from 231 in 2012 to a 227 in 2013. 2013 was the year the 1st MD/MPH class took Step 1, and around 11 people failed (in a class of just 50), pulling down the entire class's average. Things were better in 2014 (if that's what you were hearing), but still not great in that 4 people people failed (still not that good in class of just 50). We'll have to see about this year and hope things are better. The MD/MPH class always has had lower GPA and MCAT coming in than the corresponding MD so that's highly suggestive. Also, they take Step 1 6 weeks earlier than the MD students, but you get 6 weeks of dedicated time to study in either program. It's also possible to delay your first rotation (and thus use your vacation time in 3rd and 4th year) in order to get additional study time, though the deans claim to have found it not very helpful in the past.

@collegestud2013 thanks for the info-- I heard that those scores were really high at my interview for MD/MPH as the deans kept boasting about the numbers. I've heard and read that doing a four year dual degree MD program is super duper difficult, and I guess that also helps explain that learning curve. Thanks again though!

Yeah, the scores seem to be improving as the program matures. But then again, keep in mind that failing Step 1 the first time is a major issue for applying to residencies. Unlike with the MCAT or SAT (where med schools and undergrad adcoms, respectively, will essentially discount your lower score if you do much better the 2nd time), most residency programs will automatically screen out anyone who failed Step 1 the 1st time, so even if they aced it the 2nd time and aced Step 2 CK they will be shut out of most programs. And failing the 2nd or 3rd time is often grounds for dismissal. For many people, their Step 1 scorer relative to the class also will be near how they rank in the class bu that's not a reason to be discouraged if you're at the bottom or to get complacent if you're at the top. Keep in mind that UMMSM doesn't really teach to Step 1 and the school exams can focus some different concepts than covered by Step 1 (though I wish they did since some of the modules are poorly organized anyway, especially the ones where they just switch to a new course coordinator. Of course I also wouldn't pick a school mainly based on Step 1 scores.

The MD/MPH may be a bit more work for the extra degree (mostly from the summer before M1), but their students also tend to be less competitive than the MD students and there is smaller proportion of your typical gunners in the class so that can some of the workload (especially among the older, non-traditional students, which the MD/MPH class tends to have a higher proportion of).
