Just two more weeks until April 8!
No it wont hurt your chances at all. First of all because of the way the application process works the MD committee has already formed its opinion once you complete the interview. So they wont likely see that you have applied anyway. But there are people every year who apply to both programs. Some get in to MD only, some to MD/MPH only, and some to both. They really are looking for different applicants. I know that may sound strange, but it's true. Many faculty members have commented on the differences in both groups. MD/MPHers tend to be older (literally older by 2 years average each year) and have had experience in the job field. The MDs tend to be the young bright applicants that blazed through undergrad with flying colors. Obviously this is a gross generalization but that is from the faculty's mouth not mine.During my interview they told us that it was not too late to apply for the 4 year MD/MPH program, and that they would use notes from our MD only interview to consider our application. Does anyone have an opinion about if adding the MPH program negatively affects our MD only chances, and if we actually have a shot applying this late?
Did they announce this somewhere?@amad01 Welp, it looks like all merit scholarships have been allocated.... Basically, the only chance we have at merit scholarships is if someone else withdraws.
Should we be expecting any sort of communication from Miami? Such as setting up email accounts, etc.?
Did they announce this somewhere?
When are financial aid packages coming? The more I look at places to live the harder it is to swallow the fact that I would spend $100,000 on rent alone for 4 years.![]()
Does Miami cover second day look costs (airfare?)
Awesome news!!! Would you mind telling us the amount?
1) This can be a bit annoying and doe make the students more competitive than at other schools (but not in a cutthroat way), the ranking is mostly internal (residencies will only see the P/D/F on your transcript and not the exact numerical grade). There will be one line on your dean's letter that indirectly mentions what quartile you were in, but since most residency programs won't read your dean's letter very carefully or won't even look at it all pre-interview (since they get so many applications they need an efficient way to screen), the difference is very small unless you can get into AOA. Your Step 1 score matters MUCH more than how well you did during your pre-clinical years. Also, keep in mind that med schools that are true p/f are only so for the preclinical years. No med school I know of is true P/F for the clinical years and those are the years that are weighed much more significantly.Good morning all,
I just wanted to know what some of your thoughts were on a few things I'm considering about UMMSM. I was admitted to their MD/MPH program, and I am super stoked about it; but the three things holding me back are 1) No true pass/fail 2) Cost of living 3) Older facilities (no simulation center, older testing methods--scantron, etc.) with "1" being the most concerning. I have been admitted to a couple of other schools, and I just want to make sure that I make the right career move based on what . I realize that my problem is a good one to have, but any opinions are welcome and appreciated. Just for context* I am leaning towards pursuing primary care, am a native to South Florida, and speak Spanish (from my studies--I want to perfect my fluency so that I can use it with my future patients).
Thanks in advance!
Scholarship offers at UM range from $5k to $30k per year for incoming MD. Every year, usually about 1/4 of the incoming class got at least $5k. They will go to, for the most part, students whose GPA and MCAT scores were both above the accepted average (which is around a 3.8/33 for the MD program).
Also, rent won't be $100k for 4 years (or about $2k/month) unless you're living by yourself in a high-end single in Brickell (the neighborhood where most of students live). The more affordable places in Brickell start at $900-$1000/month assuming you're sharing with 1-2 other roommates, and if money is an issue there are cheaper places to live in Miami where you could probably get the rent down to $600-$700/month. One such example is Dominion Tower which is right on the medical campus.
I'm with a SO so will need my own place. Most i've seen in Brickell are very nice and $2k seems to be about as low as they go unless you want a 400 sq ft box. I will look into Dominion Tower though!
EDIT: these reviews of dominion tower concern me...

I will look more in these areas. Can you mention/recommend any specific places/buildings?Want to lower your rent? Move near the school or look away from brickell. Think outside the box. I've never spent more than 1300 on rent for a 1 bedroom and I've lived in midtown, coconut grove, the roads (1/2 mile from brickell)...

No. Because I didn't pursue big fancy building w big amenities and I usually went with condo/private owners. Use craigslist, use the list from the school - they have a housing packet that students put together... I did the exact same thing for the last two cities I've lived in for prelim and residency and have found myself spending less than others for more value.
Got the "final decision has been made" status.
Good luck to everyone still waiting for news!!
it was an emotional rollercoaster... why can't they email the canelink infoJust a heads-up to some people...If you see a Miami envelope in your mail, it may just be information to access CaneLink. So anticlimactic haha
me too!Me also! Wednesday can't come fast enough... Good luck 🙂
Not me, but that sounds really promising!! Fingers crossed for you. I would assume that means something...Anyone waiting on the April 08 decision date.. receive a second look email?
Does this have any financial aid info in it? I'm abroad at the moment so I'm hoping they can just email it.it was an emotional rollercoaster... why can't they email the canelink info
nothing... just how to set up your canelinkDoes this have any financial aid info in it? I'm abroad at the moment so I'm hoping they can just email it.
My ASSUMPTION is that on the friday before (April 3rd) everyone who they are caught up to with a final score is listed in the final rankings, which essentially makes your "final decision." Maybe the whole committee doesn't meet on these days, rather your score is just finalized and you are ranked. Then it goes through the system and your portal is changed on monday then on wednesday they meet around 5 just to make sure everyone agrees on the 20 they are accepting and that they are meeting their quotas. This would mean your "final decision" (wl or admit) probably isn't truly final until after that wednesday meeting. This is simply me speculating, perhaps someone has more info? So, I’m confused. The committee meets on April 8 and finishes up a little before 5 then? Do they have meetings before this date?
I just checked my status on the portal tonight and it said “A final decision has been reached by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on your application. Contact the admissions committee… if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days.”
I wonder why this is the case if the committee is still meeting on Wednesday.
Good luck to us all this Wednesday, especially to those who were in my interview group! (ie @Nate S )
Rest assured my cell phone will never leave my side on Wednesday afternoon
I'm not sure if they are done yet, I'd assume so.They're done interviewing right? You would think they would have sent out mass rejections by now, but it says on my portal that my file has been reviewed and a final decision has not yet been made. It had been under review for months and just switched today.
+1, no notification since submitting my secondary in early August.I haven't received an interview or a rejection either. My status says, "Your application is currently under review by the admissions committee."

Ahhh I figured, all is well! Thanks for verifying! When I applied a million years ago several schools never sent out rejections. They just said your application is being reviewed. It was annoying then and still is now. Nobody wants to be waiting for nothing especially when they spent money on it.
Anyways, they are done interviewing and by now if you haven't received an interview you're done.
I haven't gotten to it yet ... I will let you knowYeah...was an interesting range of emotions. Did you have issues setting up your account?
I was skipped 3 times when I had that status. It wasn't until it changed to "final decision has been made" that I receive a response. Sounds like they haven't gotten to you yet, I wouldn't get your hopes up for news.My application says "Your applications and interview report will be reviewed a final time by the admissions committee...." Just being neurotic and wondering what that means since some people already have the "A final decision has been made" status... I guess I'll find out come tomorrow... Good luck everyone!
Yeah...was an interesting range of emotions. Did you have issues setting up your account?
My login doesn't seem to work. I'll probably call about it tomorrow.

do they call around a certain time?
Ah, okay! I started doubting if I knew my own birthday haha!
