how many of the people receiving II and acceptances went to school in texas? Im IS have decently high stats, plenty of research at top tier institutions, plenty of community service and I havent heard a peep. I did my undergrad and masters outside of texas... i know about 7 students at UTH and SW and they all went to UT for undergrad. im a little upset with my homestate to be honest. Anyone in a similar situation?

I go to school in California and I was just recently accepted. Give it more time! With good stats/EC's you'll surely get in somewhere

Thanks! the funny part is that i have had 3 interviews at other respectable md schools which is why i am confused.

I feel like you're bound to hear back soon! But you're definitely not alone - I'm IS but went to an east coast school for undergrad, and it's been quite quiet for me as well.

Maybe, they think you are so good. You will eventually go the Top 10 schools. In addition, Texas schools are looking for people will most likely practice in Texas. Maybe, Going out of state for undergrad indicates you want to live out side of Texas, especially if you are going to out of state public school.

The above are just my speculations.

I'm a Texas resident but I go to school OOS, at a top university, I guess lol. I even did SMDEP here, which really got me interested in the school, so I'd love to get the chance to go back; hoping I get an interview here! GPA's eh though..MCAT score is ok/good for URM. Let's not give up hope yet! 🙂

I have a friend, M4 now at UTMB, and she went to school OOS; she's a Texas resident, and was actually focusing on schools OOS, but got acceptances from Texas instead. She said Texas is pretty good with trying to get TX residents to stay in Texas. Giving out interviews to people who went/go to school OOS could be a better reason to get them to come and study in their institution! Just an idea ^_^

UTH is usually slower than other Tx med schools. I applied 6 Tx schools but UTH was the last one to send me II. I got pre-matched. They have a lot of applicants, and just need a little more time. I am sure they will invite you for interview if you have good stats and EC. Good luck to you.

Do they accept update letters/letters of interest?
In their completion email, they say not to email them any update letters until after the interview. But I was also wondering if an interest letter to the dean would be alright, anyone done this before?

Anyone who got accepted, did you receive any kind of letter or paper form of information in the mail? Or had all correspondence been strictly digital? Thanks!

Strictly digital here. But I did have to send them an acceptance form by mail.

Also, can any current student comment on the curriculum? I heard about supposed "hell weeks" through the semester. How have you been able to deal with the block schedule?

Reposted from earlier in the thread:

"I'm a current MS2 at UTH. I'll be honest, the curriculum was not my favorite of the schools I was considering. Block week sounded terrifying, and I would have rather done organ based than UTH's design. It wasn't nearly as bad as I though it would be! You get used to block week very quickly, and all the classes we're in, especially second year, are covering the same concepts at the same time, so they all correspond very well. I'm way happier than I expected with the curriculum. I feel like I get what I need to know, and I think (most of the time), they present it in a way, and order, that makes sense.

When I originally came here, I came here thinking I was coming in spite of the curriculum. No one (read: residency directors) care about the first two years of medical school, so I figured I didn't really either. UTH does great on STEP1 and that was really all I cared about from MS1/MS2. I came here for the clinical experience, and I am definitely happy I did. Even as a second year, the school makes sure we get out and see real patients in the hospitals, and my preceptor has been awesome at picking patients with interesting presentations to help me learn (just examined a leprosy patient last week). I'm not sure I would have gotten such great experience this early on at other schools, and I'm so excited for the clinical years."

Specifically on block weeks - the first one feels like the worst thing that has happened to you cause you have no idea what to expect. After that, you realize they're not that bad and you get much better at managing time/stress. Everything else in your academic life is on hold until after block - no clubs, no random papers due, just study/test/eat/sleep. I like that schedule, but I'm also a cyclical kind of person - I like to have a week or two where I go hard and study a lot, and then a few weeks where I chill and go out of town on the weekends or take study free days (in MS2... its more like study free weeks....). I don't think I'd have that option elsewhere, where the testing is more consistent, so I thoroughly enjoy it. Being able to start each study period refreshed because I have had a real break after the last set of tests I think has helped the study burn out.

Finally - looking back, I think the things worth considering most are what school did you feel the most at home, where is going to give you the best clinical experience, and where do you want to live. I don't really think the curriculum for years 1/2 matters much. All Texas schools do great for the first two years... but you need to think what environment you're going to succeed in. You're picking both your friends and your home for the next four years - pick wherever you felt the most comfortable! If that's not UT Houston, that's fine. Med school is stressful. Don't make it worse by picking a school whose atmosphere is the round hole to your square peg.

I have a question regarding when I have to accept. I pre-matched on november 15th. However, I am still waiting to hear back from UT Southwestern before I make my decision. In my acceptance email it asked me to login to my portal and sign some papers and stuff and it said I have like three weeks or something like that. Is anyone else in the same situation as me? and if so, do we need to sign those documents or do we get to wait until match day before we do anything, Im a little confused as to what these documents we have on our portal are and if that means I am accepting, which is something I am not ready to do.

Best way to get a concrete answer is to email/call the school

You can hold on to that acceptance, sign the papers, have the assurance of going somewhere, and still rank them after UTSW for match day. Then, if you match to UTSW or you get a prematch from them, you can just notify UTH so they can fill the seat. This is the best of both worlds - binding for them, not for you.

just to clarify, signing the papers does not hurt my chances of getting a prematch or matching to another school?

Can anyone elaborate more on the block based medical curriculum?

Also, what's a typical weekly schedule like? I am looking back at the older threads and some say that it is from 9-5 whereas others say that lectures run from 8-12pm with histo/anatomy lab everyday from 1-5pm

Public link to the MS1/2 schedule - https://one45.uth.tmc.edu/app/one.p...sched_type=public_curric&one45_public_access=
(not everything on here applies to every student, often we rotate through activities)

Typical MS1 schedule
8-12 Lecture (usually not required, there are some occasional mandatory lectures, especially first semester)
12-1 Various clubs offer free lunch/lunch lectures
Afternoon Fall Semester
MWF 1-5 Anatomy lab. You only dissect every other lab
T/Th 1-3 Histo lab - these are not required. I literally went to three.
Spring semester MS1
T - 1-4 neuro lab, nothing the other days of the week

Typical MS2 Schedule
8-12 Lecture
12-1 same clubs with free lunch (less exciting this year)
Afternoon usually free - there are occasional skill sessions/interviewing sessions

Typical MS3 schedule
Typical? There isn't one...

As to the block schedule, what kind of information are you looking for? I wrote out some thoughts earlier in this thread (a few posts up from this one) about what block week is like/what the curriculum is like, but I'm happy to try and answer any questions not included in those paragraphs.

Yeah. Can't figure out how to edit posts. Mistake post!

Sorry I am late to the thread. I am an MS1 at UTH. I'm an URM with average stats and I pre matched. I am a New Orleans native that finished high school in Houston and went to UG OOS... Sooooo I am kind of in-state kind of out.

We have a lot of OOS students in my class. Also interviews do carry into January and sometimes a little later. Uhhh what else? The curriculum.... It isn't all as bad as you may think. Med school gets easier to manage class load due to the fact you won't have much of a life out of school lol. Block weeks are not THAT bad... Imagine a finals week every 4-8 weeks. Anymore questions direct them my way and I will try to help.

P.S. Best thing is that NO.ONE. fails out. If any of the accepted students that definitely plan on going here want to talk more feel free to message me as well... If you're 50/50 with another school I can try to sell UTH to you.

Absolutely. I was complete in July, but my MCAT score was not received until October.
Ah, okay. I got the "Your application has been received for the 2014-2015 interview season. As of today, the status of your application is UNDER REVIEW. Please DO NOT contact our office to check the status of your application. We will contact you by email with any status change."...email August 6... haven't heard anything from anyone since then, which is why I'm a little worried...but I'm still hopeful.

Do you guys think they'll send out another round of pre-matches? Or just one like they seemingly did last year. Did they make any mention to any of you all with interviews past 11/15?

Anyone else who interviewed on 11/21 not have UTH listed for ranking yet?

What does it mean to have UTH listed for ranking? Is this like ranking your accepted schools for the Match? Sorry, I'm a slightly clueless OOSer. I interviewed on 11/19 so I'm hoping I didn't miss something.

Ranking is for IS only. ISer's have a match system, so they rank they schools that they've interviewed at. OOS don't participate in the TMDSAS match.

Edit: congrats on getting an OOS interview though! I hope you get an acceptance soon as well 🙂

I know they do send out some pre-matches after Nov 15th. I have a classmate who pre-matched, but didn't interview until right after prematch day. I do not have any idea how many, but my guess would be that its just a few...

I'm in-state and got the "Application received" email on September 6. Is that too late for UT Houston? Did anyone get a II who were complete on or after that date? Thanks.

I was complete on that same date. Got my II in mid-October.
