2014-2015 University of Texas - Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just finished an interview here. I was told not to expect any more prematches and most of the class from now will be filled with the match and then pull off the waitlist
Could just mean that they won't be prematching people who interviewed in December. But if they mean no more prematch batches period it wouldn't surprise me. Houston is notoriously light on prematches.

They re-emphasized that they are very light on prematches! Im not sure about if it just meant that they are not going to issue prematches for people that interviewed in decemember. Guess time will tell

I wouldn't be surprised if they just sent out the 11/15 batch and then maybe a little tiny one closer to mid or the end of December. Although the number of people who pre-matched on here seemed to be about the same size as the batch from UTSW so I find that odd.

Yall don't stress too much about prematch. Our class had like 30 ish pre match. If UTH is your first choice rank it there! A fair number of my classmates came off the wait list in state and out. Some as late as the day before orientation. So don't lose hope.

I'm OOS and interviewed here 2 months ago and haven't heard anything! Should I contact them or continue to wait?

Hi, all! I interviewed here on 11/21 and UTH still hasn't come up on my TMDSAS rank list. Anyone else in the same boat? Thanks!

Interesting. Mine is up and I interviewed December 5th.

Any info or timeline as to when OOS interviewees are likely to be accepted or rejected?

Did you happen to get in touch with anyone about the rank list delay?

If not, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Let me know! Thanks!

Give them a call! I called but the person who could answer my question wasn't available at the time so I just left a message. I would call again about it but I don't want to be that guy.

Hello loves! Its me the procrastinating MS1 again! For all of you who are accepted, congrats! We love you all already! Request to join us on the facebook page, and shoot me a message if you want to be approved to join the group and its taking longer than you want to wait. (Link right above in my lovely classmates post).

For all of you waiting on an interview invite, don't despair! We still have a couple interview days in January so there is still hope and you all sound amazing so I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more invites go out!

Finally, feel free to message me about literally anything. I've been through it all and am more than willing to talk about any medical school/curriculum/application/match/prematch/reapplying/life situation. Its a long grueling process and no one should have to go it alone. Lol. Keep your heads up guys! Almost there!

Talked to them about the rank list situation today and they said that they are having technical difficulties, but they they should be resolved shortly and to check back in the next couple days!

They also said to let them know if the issue continues after the next few days.

Here's hoping it'll be fixed soon!

It's up now!

Has any OOS applicant interviewed in mid Oct heard anything from the school?

Public link to the MS1/2 schedule - https://one45.uth.tmc.edu/app/one.p...sched_type=public_curric&one45_public_access=
(not everything on here applies to every student, often we rotate through activities)

Typical MS1 schedule
8-12 Lecture (usually not required, there are some occasional mandatory lectures, especially first semester)
12-1 Various clubs offer free lunch/lunch lectures
Afternoon Fall Semester
MWF 1-5 Anatomy lab. You only dissect every other lab
T/Th 1-3 Histo lab - these are not required. I literally went to three.
Spring semester MS1
T - 1-4 neuro lab, nothing the other days of the week

Typical MS2 Schedule
8-12 Lecture
12-1 same clubs with free lunch (less exciting this year)
Afternoon usually free - there are occasional skill sessions/interviewing sessions

Typical MS3 schedule
Typical? There isn't one...

As to the block schedule, what kind of information are you looking for? I wrote out some thoughts earlier in this thread (a few posts up from this one) about what block week is like/what the curriculum is like, but I'm happy to try and answer any questions not included in those paragraphs.

Thanks so much for the info!

Question 1: Just to clarify, if we dissect every other anatomy lab, does that mean if I went to the one on Monday, I would skip Wednesday and return to lab on Friday?
Question 2: I read something about having a "free weekend/relaxing period" after each block test week. Exactly how many days does this "free weekend/relaxing period" consist of?

Current first year here. Dissection tanks are normally 6 people, divided into two different "teams." There are Orange and White teams that dissect every other day. However, if you dissected on Friday, you come in on Monday and teach your dissection to the other team for the first 30 minutes of the lab period. So you're going into the lab 3 days a week but only dissecting every other one.

Unfortunately the "free weekend" after blocks are simply that, a free weekend. We finish exams on Friday and have class on Monday. The next few weeks after a block are pretty fun though, since the studying can be toned down a lot.

If you have any other questions, feel free to post them or shoot me a message!

Does anyone know if UT Houston sends out any merit based scholarships before match day?

Do you guys think all the prematch offers have been sent out or do you think they are doing any more?

Has any OOS applicant interviewed in mid Oct heard anything from the school?

I am OOS, interviewed mid November, and have not heard anything yet. Should we not expect anything until after the in-state students match in February?

Judging by past threads, a decent number of OOS acceptances seem to be sent out on match day along with all the IS acceptances. So I wouldn't necessarily expect anything until then, though it certainly could happen before that.

Please let me know if you plan on contacting the admissions office at all to inquire about this. I'm in the same boat and eagerly anticipating my first acceptance (finger's crossed).

No, I don't want to be the person to call/email and ask about when a decision is going to be made. Being patient sucks though.

Fair enough, I didn't either haha. 🙂
Thanks estanton!

Just so ya'll know, the last interview day is this Friday (so no more II's). Good luck!

I just called them and an admin said that they are interviewing into mid this month and that it's still possible to get an interview as they try to fill that last date. tiny hope.

I'll ask when I email them about something else.

I pre matched so there's not really any real or perceived repercussions!

They gave a vague answer about how they won't know until closer to the time. Didn't really specify how many if any had been given out yet.

They're starting meetings next week for both OOS and IS students to start seriously filling the seats in the class since the last interview days were today and Friday, Jan 9th (sad... kinda...excited to meet you guys!). From what I understand from a conversation with someone admissions today, most of the OOS acceptances will go out around the same time as match day on Feb 1st. A big portion of both the MS1 and MS2 class came out of the wait list, so don't get discouraged if you don't get a match!

Don't forget that rankings are due on Jan 21st, so if anyone has any questions for some last minute ranking decisions, a couple of us students will be checking in to help answer them. Also, a link again to the fb page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/337147823137875/

Just for some of the other unanswered question above...

Does anyone know if UT Houston sends out any merit based scholarships before match day?

I don't think so... not totally sure. https://med.uth.edu/admissions/entering-student-checklist/ is the link for all the entering student stuff, and there is a form to fill out be considered for scholarships. Some of these are announced before school, and some were announced during retreat.

Does anyone know when the student housing application opens?

Housing application opens on the 17th - https://www.uth.edu/housing/

As in the last interview date could be the 16th and not the 9th? Ah!

I know it's all speculation... being a match heavy school, why does UTH prematch some over others?

They really like you or the Deans of Admissions see potential I'm guessing (At least that's what we tell ourselves).
