2014-2015 University of Wisconsin Application Thread

Rejected in the mail today. LizzyM 76. IS. 1st day interview. Absolutely shocked. Good luck to everyone else though

Oh man, ndafife, I am sorry to hear that. That is very rough news.

I believe the admissions staff said they will talk to interviewed applicants about why they weren't accepted, right? Maybe they can shed some light on what happened.

Sending good wishes on the rest of your cycle--your stats are fantastic, it looks like you've got some great interviews, and things will come right in the end.

Well seeing this made me sweat. Best of luck to you elsewhere!

Were you rejected or wait listed? Not sure if they clarify or not.

Also were you a UW undergrad?

Has anyone been accepted via snail mail yet without the phone call?

Still waiting for some UW love. Have many people received an interview after being placed on hold?

Wisconsin doesn't do silent rejections. If you're accepted, they usually try to call you + inform you by inviting you to the fb group over email before the acceptance letter officially arrives (a couple weeks later).

If you're rejected (which isn't very common this early in the cycle) or waitlisted, you will receive your notice in the mail. Your post-interview note should have said you should expect to hear back between 4-6 weeks after your interview day. If by then you haven't heard/received anything in the mail, then you should call the admissions office to check on your status. Other than that, not everyone in your interview day will hear back the same week for various reasons, as kittykattat said 🙂

Do you happen to know if pre-interview rejections also come through snail mail? Thanks!

Site said we'd get an email. I know some got straight up rejections, some got holds, and some have heard nothing to date. I'd imagine at this point a hold is better than hearing nothing, and hearing nothing is a slim-to-none.

I am in thr latter category, just been watching this forum and drawing assumptions.

This is kind of a funny year since they had that buggy situation with accidentally sending everyone secondaries earlier in the cycle. I don't know if this has anything to do with the delays/why some people have not heard back, but generally UW is very good with their turn around time.

At this point, hearing nothing could mean anything, and not necessarily "bad news." Remember, if UW makes a final decision, they'll let you know pretty quickly - if you haven't heard anything, that could be for a million reasons, such as delays in verifying residency, interest in interviewing but they're waiting to see "when" would be the best time to (they know how to maintain their yield every year, so I trust they know what they're doing), or that they haven't even gotten to your application yet. Thousands apply every year (especially for OOSers), so they have to carefully and strategically make the "right" decision for every application. Hang tight!

Thanks - I try not to drive myself too crazy with trying to make sense out of the admissions process, but these 3 months without any news have felt looooong!

Rejected after interview via mail. Off to Iowa for Med school next year ))

I got my interview invite today at about 3pm! So excited! I submitted my secondary on 8/17 in the early afternoon and my residency was verified on 9/22... My interview date is December 2nd. I will sleeping like a baby tonight🙂

Good luck to everyone!

Got waitlisted via letter today. OOS, LizzyM 73, interviewed 9/19. Very disappointing as Wisconsin was probably my top choice, but since I have an acceptance at my state school(my #2 choice) I guess I am happy with how this cycle has gone. Just a little frustrating as both interviews ended with the interviewer(s) saying good things and the dean saying 80-100% of us would be admitted(for first interview day people). I had really started to see myself going here.

My letter states I should hear back in late April and looking at past threads it seems the waitlist for OOS students does not move at all since they already give acceptance offers to more OOS than they can take and really just pull from IS waitlist(so I’m essentially rejected). I will probably just wait and see where I fall in the OOS waitlist, but make plans to attend my state school. Overall, I was just surprised to get an interview as an OOS, but disappointed I couldn’t show I was a good fit for the school. I can honestly say there were a few interview questions I could have answered better.

Seems like a great school. Glad to be basically done with this whole application process and grateful I only had to do it once. Best of luck to everyone else!

Rejected via mail after interviewing 10/3, oos. Devastated :-(

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that 🙁 From the info posted on SDN, it doesn't seem like they are following their statistic of a 50% acceptance rate...2 acceptances, 2 waitlists, 3 rejections. Now I'm even more nervous to hear back!

Good luck in the rest of your cycle!

That's how I feel. Obviously SDN is not a complete/accurate representation, but it is disconcerting. I am really hopeful and can see myself at Madison, but there has been a lot of bad news on this thread!

i agree with the sampling bias but it seems like it has been really quiet in terms of post interview decisions released...

Is there anyone who interviewed 10/10 or earlier who hasn't heard back yet? I'm starting to feel a little of this premed anticipation craziness coming on and I'm afraid to check the mail! I can't remember if they said they go through the interview days in order or not.

My impression is that it's really based on the schedule of your interviewer and when they can make the committee meeting to talk about your file. They did say 4-6 weeks so I would bet you'll hear soon enough.

Thanks for the info about scholarships! Any idea what a "typical" award might be? Or what criteria are considered when awarding scholarships?

Mine was ~half tuition... so 15k per year (60k total). I believe some girl on SDN got like 100k or full scholarship? I don't remember.

In regards to me, I was an OOS Caucasian male. My numbers might have been slightly above their average (don't remember their 2012 stats).

It was all about my EC's, imo. Very public health heavy which is right up their alley.

They were pretty transparent during our group talks/presentations on interview day. It went something like "We are a great school (I agree btw) and score highly on all rankings. Nevertheless, we have trouble getting top applicants here because a lot of the people we accept are also accepted to the brand name top 20 schools. So we will try to increase interest with generous scholarships."

Interestingly enough, they foreshadowed my eventual decision and their plan worked to some degree. They did make the decision very hard. In fact, now and then I still think "hmm, wonder what it would be like over there". Nevertheless, I love where I'm at now -- but one of those 100k scholarships would have likely swayed me over from my "dream school".

Long story short, if I wasn't a Panther, I have no doubt I'd be a Badger today.

It really varies, but I've seen 10k/year (IS and OOS), 15k/year ("half"), 3/4 tuition, and full tuition scholarships. I don't think they really play around with the numbers much beyond that. The school also offers "need-based" financial aid during the 2nd year based on your FAFSA.

There seems to be "some" merit to it (maybe more so with their IS cohort?), but I think it has more to do with how much the school believes what you have to bring to the school "fits" into their academic/school goals. I feel like our school does what it can to offer scholarships (like recruitment money) to sway applicants who may otherwise choose other top schools/their in-state school(s) over UW too though.

All of the people I know from OOS who got scholarships had very specific niches/experiences (public health, leadership, etc-type commitments) and weren't necessarily the "highest GPA/MCAT" type applicants. I have a scholarship and I can confidently tell you that my GPA/MCAT wasn't the deciding factor,

It seems that the two most common (merit based- not sure about need based) awards in my class are either full tuition (25k/yr IS or 35k/yr OOS) or 10k/yr which is tuition remission for OOSers or about 40% tuition for ISers. They do not give full rides (full tuition plus cost of living stipends) to my knowledge.

The criteria are demonstration of dedication to community service and/or public health, academic success, and URM status among other things, but like Frazier said, often times they will use the merit awards to keep their offer competitive with brand name schools like Ivys and UC's.

Thank you so much, all of you are awesome! Wisconsin left a wonderful impression on me and I can definitely see myself there, but I need to take COA and other factors into my final decision. A scholarship would definitely help swing the balance. And you've all given me hope, bc the strongest part of my application is my ECs, leadership, etc. We'll see what happens, but the dream is still alive!

Got the rejection letter from the WARM program today.... Here's hoping to better luck with the regular MD admissions committee...... Interviewed 10/10.

Hey all, has anyone been accepted to the WARM program yet? I'm OOS and interviewed back in September. Last week I received a letter that said I would't get a decision until March... It sounded awfully waitlist-y without actually saying I'm on the waitlist. Does anyone know whether it's normal for them to make decisions for the WARM program so late?
Thanks, and congrats to all who have been accepted!
