2014-2015 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Like so many of you this morning, I received a status change as well.

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Admissions Committee will now do a comprehensive review of your application. Once the review is complete, your file will be prioritized, and interviews will be granted based on your priority score and the date your file was completed.

This is confusing to me. I received an email on Sept 23 that stated:

"Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decision."

So the file wasn't really complete before? The admissions committee has had it all of this time but haven't done a comprehensive review? So confusing.

I'm sure that this has probably been addressed multiple times in the staggering 35 pages that compose this thread, but I don't currently possess the desire to comb through those pages to ascertain all of the implications of my newest status update. So for me, this status update is simply a "you haven't been cut yet, but you're still waiting." I don't think I'm going to hold my breath with VCU...

I received the "further" status this morning. Funny, I am almost certain I received the same status update months ago...

ALSO, under my application status, it says "Please note that your file may be put on hold for several reasons:" and lists "hold for mcat" and "hold for grades". Does anyone else have this?

What is the email you get for the post-interview hold? And what exactly does that entail? I thought we could only hear about acceptances/rejections on certain days of the year (ie. Dec. 16th)?

I had the same progression. First I got the "Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decision.", then the other complete one that you got, then further, then interview.

For those of you who got rejected, what were your stats?
3.5, 32. But experience is my selling point (3000+ clinical, 2000+ research, 1800+ service, 2000+ other employment) since I have middle of the road numbers. Maybe VCU wants high stats for their OOS if they are going to consider you

I don't think that's necessarily true, I'm out of state, zero ties to anywhere south of the Ohio river, with a 3.6 and 31. I got an ii in September. I could be some anomaly that slipped through the cracks, but I don't think we can positively make that generalization. Sorry about your rejection, I hope you hear wonderful things elsewhere!

Any service to the underserved or indigent populations?

Well...I'm not sure. My family started a pharmaceutical that provides OTC meds to Hispanic populations in rural locations (with Spanish labels). If that fits the description, then yes, I did 6 months full time post-graduation going to place to place describing and selling product in Spanish (though I rec'd a paycheck). Currently volunteer weekly at a Free Clinic. Yet the majority of my service from four years as a Counselor & Volunteer at a pediatric oncology summer camp and support organization. In college I also did several summers of teaching to a Children's Home basic life skills (ie. cooking healthy meals).

I don't know if any of those fit the bill for "underserved" but thanks all for the support - VCU was a shot in the dark from the beginning and good luck to you all still waiting to here back!

I was complete mid-July, and just received the "May" status as well. For me, it means I'm not rejected, but until it becomes (IF it becomes) an II, I'm still no closer to acceptance either haha.

+1

Oh OK. I just asked that because VCU really values from that my understanding, and if they didn't see that on your application then that might be a reason. But sorry to hear and good luck with everything else.

There is still hope!
Just received an II at VCU today, scheduled for November 25. I am instate. I interviewed and wait listed here last year, so I'm hoping for better luck this time around.

Congrats! Complete date?

It's just the same email as the regular status updates, but you just get a new status that says something along the lines of: We have reviewed your file and put it on hold for next admission dates. You won't hear anything else from us about this.

Pretty much it means we have a score post interview and we may get an acceptance on one of those offer days if it falls within their accepted score range that day.

Oh, okay. Does everyone who interviews get this? I interviewed the beginning of November but haven't received it yet. I'm hoping to be considered for Dec. 16th, so I was just curious.

It may be a few weeks before you get that status. I interviewed early in the cycle and it took 3-4 weeks to have that post interview status. I also got an acceptance after that. So don't panic.

Keep in mind that with holidays approaching you may not get an immediate status change.
I would say give it 4 weeks before you get worried. IIRC from interview day when you get reviews is dependent on the schedules of multiple adcom members, so it may take a while. Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks for filling me in on this!

May status.... June status... Further....closer...hold...review...they have to be kidding...why do this to people??? Why such a mystery. Isn't this profession about compassion? Didn't the adcom people go thru this themselves??

Imagine trying to be thorough with 7,000+ people. Get over yourself.

Thanks for the info. My interviewer said he'd be presenting me to the adcom the Monday after I interviewed. Do they meet again, or is this the meeting in which you are given a score? Also, out of curiosity, I wonder if there is any way to know for sure if you are being screened for acceptances on December 16th? If I don't get accepted, I'd like to know if it was due to my score being too low or if they didn't review me in time.

I think that as long as they meet and you get voted on by the Ad Comm, you're up for consideration for the Dec. 16th. As long as you get the post-interview hold, you're on the list I believe!

I got this status update last night:
"Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decision."

Should I expect a real status update soon (meaning a May/further/rejection)?

So... I also read (and heard on my interview day) that we would hear from them within 10 days or so if we were rejected. I interviewed 10+ days ago, haven't heard anything, so hopefully I can assume I was not rejected. 🙂 It is still a bit confusing, as I do not know how they decide to reject me or not if the adcom has not met to discuss my file yet ( I have not received post-interview hold status yet).... but I try not to think too much about it and stay optimistic.

II! Further status yesterday ; OOS applicant.

Sorry what's "further status?"

I just received an email from VCU saying I have a status update. I check on the portal and it just tells me that I'm complete... They received my supplemental 9/9.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I got a status change email as well today. Website says:
"Your file is complete, and has been forwarded to the Admissions Committee for further decison."

Ive gotten the impression that nothing should be expected of it.

That's bs. Why wouldn't they fix that?

Can you tell me the time you got the email?

Complete mid-July, got my very first status update on Saturday (the MAY status). For anyone else still waiting, I sent multiple emails over the course of the past couple months politely inquiring about my status and reiterating my interest in VCU. Never got a response, and didn't seem to help..

I've been complete since late August. Haven't heard a status update since I was complete. When I log in it says "Your file is complete and the Admission Review committee will now do a full comprehensive...."
I hope I don't have to wait another month. OOS though.
