Please review the following four statements or questions. Write your response, taking up to 1/2 page for each and upload individually as a pdf file. Please copy the question and place as the title of each of your answers. Please include your name and AMCAS number on each answer.

Imagine a world in which illness and injury do not exist. All hospitals and medical schools have closed because there is no longer a need. What would you choose to do with your life in such a world?

Can you describe a time when you failed despite your best efforts? How would you handle it differently now?

Other than a family member, who has been the most influential person in your life and why?

You are the Chair of the Committee on Admissions: What would you consider to be the most important feature or component of a candidate's application?

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

I haven't been able to see what the OOS % rate is at this school. Does anyone know?

Check the MSAR! It says only OOS who have ties to WV from bordering states are considered. Applying OOS.

We do give preference to West Virginia residents and to non-resident students having strong ties with West Virginia. Thus, while non-residents attending one of the West Virginia colleges or universities will be given careful review, their applications will have a lower priority consideration than those of a West Virginia resident. It should be remembered that out-of-state candidates will be regarded as residents by the medical schools in their home states. An applicant may be a legal resident of only one state. This status is verified by the West Virginia University Office of Admissions and not by the School of Medicine or the Committee on Admissions.

So I called their admissions department and here's the scoop. They DO accept people who are out of state anywhere from the U.S without any ties to West Virginia. They said half of their class starting this fall was out of state and a dozen had no ties to WV. They said they look for people who emphasize working with underserved populations as a major deal breaker. So I'm still going to apply! 🙂

Yeah that's pretty much the opposite of what I heard. They WANT those who work with the underserved, especially rural underserved!

Sorry that's what I meant, I guess I phrased that wrong in my previous statement. I worked a lot with underserved people.

That's okay! Not sure if Pharm is different on focus than med... but you are posting in the AMCAS thread... are you Pre-Med or Pre-Pharm @moonwake ?

Hey guys! I was accepted and am starting this August! My roommate and I are both out of state; I am from a neighboring state, she is not. I definitely recommend applying here if you are oos...they certainly give you more consideration than most schools that I made the mistake of applying to. Best of luck! Love this school and program.

Wow. Just got a rejection email a few minutes ago. I'm heartbroken.

Dang, just got the secondary and the essays are all different from last year's:

And also another major change is that most of the application is submitted electronically now instead of via snail mail. Only the banner application must be mailed. But the way the e-application is set up is a bit strange. You submit the different parts separately and your email address is the only piece of identifying information that all the electronic forms ask for. Thus, my guess is that you should make sure to use the same email address for all forms because they are probably using that to compile the separate parts of your application, especially if you submit them at different times.

I heard WVU only sends secondaries to those they interview. Anyone know anything about this?

Do we really have to mail the banner application to them?

I would say that you're pretty sure to get an interview invite if you received the secondary application unless you send in some really strange essays.

sweet!

Yep. At least it's just one form. Last year, you had to mail the entire secondary application and that was vaguely nerve-wracking. The page for the banner application says: "This document is not electronic. It needs to be printed off, completed, and mailed back to us." And then it has a link to the Word doc for printing.

Damn these questions are HARD AS HELL!

Hey, y'all! I got their secondary today as well. I'm really grateful since I'm OOS. I guess they really liked my passion for service after reading my AMCAS. And to those who unfortunately got rejected, keep your head up! Y'all will get interviews from other places, I'm sure!

So we're sure on the whole secondary = interview thing?

Hey guys, I was rejected..
I can't figure out what went wrong.. I'm from a neighboring state that borders WV. I live close to WV. I live in Appalachia, in a small mountain coal mining town. I have served Appalachia in the capacity of a civil servant. I have shadowed in an Appalachian primary care clinic for the past year.
My numbers are
BCMP: 3.7
CUM: 3.8
MCAT: 31Q

I have a couple of requests/questions:

1. For those of y'all that got the secondary. Would you mind sharing your stats and ties to WV?
2. Do y'all think it's worth it for me to try to send in "Additional compelling information?"

It might have been your PS? May not have been in line with what they wanted. How was your
PS and letters of rec? Also, I heard you can appeal or something. I'd look into that.

From my understanding WVU has a specific mission and if you don't fit this image, they most likely won't extend a secondary. As said above, maybe it was the PS?

Just got a secondary. I'm from a bordering state and have family in WV, but didn't indicate that anywhere in my application. 3.7c/3.5s/31. I talked about working with the underserved in my PS so maybe that's why they liked me enough to send me a secondary. I personally wouldn't waste time sending them any additional information because I'm sure they're swamped, but if this is your top choice, then why not? It wouldn't negatively impact you in any way that I can think of.

I'm sorry to hear that, bud. 🙁

My stats:
3.73 cGPA
3.78 sGPA (from Wash U, so they may have taken academic rigor and grade deflation into account)
36 MCAT
No ties to WV

Maybe you were lacking in another part of your application? I had lots of community service, no research, and put that I am volunteering for hospice care and working as a scribe as current activities for this gap year. You can try sending them compelling reasons to give you another chance, but I'm not sure it'll work.

I am a resident of a state that borders WV.
I have an Uncle that lives in WV but did not indicate that any where on my app.

Sorry for the early disappointment. Brighter roads are ahead. All the best.

I got the secondary also. I just have a question regarding the banner app. For the secondary instructions, it says:
  1. Complete the following Secondary Application forms on-line and submit electronically to [email address]. We recommend that you print a copy of all your submitted materials for your records.
    1. Secondary Application with a passport quality, 2" x 2" photo
    2. Secondary Application Signature Page
    3. Secondary Application Essays
    4. West Virginia University Banner Application
    5. Application Fee ( $100 ) through Ecommerce
Since the banner application is listed here also, should we just email it to them? I know under the banner app page, it says to mail it to them. However, I couldn't find a mailing address on the instructions or the banner app, so I was wondering if they just meant to e-mail it to them and that we couldn't submit it online like we did for the other pages.

I wish the best for everyone else that got a secondary. And for those that did not, I am sure that you will have many other secondaries and II's. I wouldn't let this one get you down. Have some ice cream, and I wish you the best.

Thanks!

You can probably email the adcoms about which address to physically mail the banner.

How hard/restrictive is the half of the page limit? Can I go over? I have a lot to say about #4.

I would definitely not go past 1 page. I think if you are 3/4 of a page or less, then you should be fine.

Submitted. Wow, those were some intense secondaries. When you submitted the essays did you get an email confirmation? NVM, I just got one.

How did you send the Banner Application in? Did you mail it or email it?

Question... what are we submitting through e-mail?
  1. Secondary Application with a passport quality, 2" x 2" photo - submitted online on the secondary page
  2. Secondary Application Signature Page - submitted on the website
  3. Secondary Application Essays - submitted on the website
  4. West Virginia University Banner Application - will be snail mailing
  5. Application Fee ( $100 ) through Ecommerce - online fee
Am I missing something?

They listed an address
I can't find it either... clearly I'm struggling a little with this particular application

Those with no ties, did you guys just say no ties, or describe why you wanna go there?

Yo, a bunch of us can't find the address. Can you please tell us where you mailed it?

Can't remember specific address but I found it on their medical school admissions page of their website. Scroll to the bottom and it is listed something 1 medical drive and a PO box.

Also I just got a double verification email for the essay responses? I'm wondering if my internet glitches and submitted twice really quickly? Hopefully won't effect my interview chance!

I'm a Maryland resident with no ties to WV but I was interviewed and put on wait list this past application cycle. I would suggest calling Dr. Hazard before sending additional compelling information. Ask her if she can tell you why you got rejected and how you can improve your application. I spoke to her earlier on in the year about my application and she was pretty open. I would say that your stats definitely meet their minimum so something else about your primary application (PS or work/activities) must need more work. Letters are unlikely to have played a role since many of us haven't even sent in letters yet and schools typically wait for the secondary application to read them.

Hey all, I just called the admissions office and was instructed that the banner application should be EMAILED back to them to [email protected]. It looks like they don't want any snail mail anymore.
