2015-2016 Loyola University Chicago (Stritch) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
no - just logged in. i'm under review, but wondering what other people's statuses of on hold mean. is this common for loyola?
Yes. After they have reviewed your application, they will either decide to give you an interview or place you on hold. People who do not receive an interview will see their status change to something along the lines of: "Your application has been reviewed and has been placed on hold for further review."

aw ****...dang. nerves, man...i really want to interview at loyola. we'll see.

Had my first interview of the cycle here this weekend and it was a great experience overall. I definitely recommend getting a student host as I learned a lot about the social vibe of the school. Also check out forest Park because that's where most students live and hang out (although, if I'm lucky enough to get in then ill be staying in the west side of chicago). The campus is great. The med school is housed in one large building, but the campus includes their hospital, a new science building, nursing school, and oncology center, and a great fitness center (probably missing some buildings there). They truly are a mission driven school and that is clear in every interaction you have w staff and students. They have a lot of special programs that are really hard to find on their website. For instance, they have medical Spanish classes once a week to learn medical terminology in Spanish. They have loads of opportunities to work in the community. They also have lots of social events and seem to really enjoy hanging out with each other outside of school. The environment seems truly collaborative and nurturing. And while a jesuit institution, i did not at all feel that they were pushy about it at all. They seem to embrace the great social justice aspects of religion without the pushy dogma. Interviews themselves were in general really casual, they kept mentioning that to us. One interviewer was a bit tough on me (asking me about my high school experience...I graduated hs in 2005 so im not sure why he was asking me what classes my high school required us to take..)Was excited to have an interview here and am now walking away truly passionate about the school.

Let me know if anyone has specific questions. I hope to see some of you there next summer!

Ps typed this out on my phone while at airport so forgive me for any errors or lapses in eloquence 🙂

@timsk

Thanks for posting! Super psyched to visit this school, getting a great vibe from it.

Quickly skimming this thread, but has anyone ACTUALLY been put on hold? Didn't see any...

Or is that just something done in past years that we've extrapolated will be done again?

Yep.

People are still being put on hold, maybe just not in this thread.
Ah, ok, thank you! So my app hasn't been scoffed at quite yet.

Really appreciate people like you taking time out to provide informed answers to questions!

Has anyone who was complete in late July and beyond even gotten an II? All I've seen from this thread are mid-July apps

I sent in my secondary on 7/11 and im still under review. There is no way they haven't looked at my app by now

In the same situation and I agree. My status changed to under review on 8/11 so it seems strange that they haven't taken a look at it

Same. My guess is they are giving IIs to people they have the most interest in now, then they will come back to the ones they reviewed, but didn't want to put on hold. I think its just a process of multiple reviews until the time when you are worthy of an II as compared to the rest of the bunch. The status process would be very complicated if they tried to accurately show what their methods may be.

sorry if this has been asked...but those of you on hold: did you get an email or it just showed up in the portal?

Those of you who already interviewed do you know when we will hear back. I interviewed already and I wanted to know when we would hear back. The admissions person said that they give out acceptances on october 15, december 15, and january 15. would we hear back october 15 or could we even hear back after that?

If you already interviewed, you get a call on October 15th if it's an acceptance. A minority of those accepted get a call the 16th or 17th. No call = waitlist or rejection via snail mail.

Just got an II here! I can't make the dates listed so I emailed them to see if they can give me an alternate date. AM I SCREWED?! I feel like crap..but on those dates I'm either travelling for other II or I'm at an interview. I didn't want to say it in my email to them so I just said I wasn't available on those dates. I feel bad for making this an inconvenience for them..and almost guilty like I should be moving my other dates. I don't want them to think I'm not interested...

Can you tell us when you were complete and stats?

You never know until you ask. Even if you ask, I'm sure they understand they are not the only school you are applying to this cycle...

Complete 7/15 with LizzyM 69.

Yes...but like with dating, we all know we're courting multiple people. Doesn't mean it's okay to say that you are.. 😉

I haven't received an II here (yet, hopefully!), but I've had to request alternate interview dates to a couple of schools due to conflicts with other interviews or with work. They understand! I haven't had a single school give me trouble. Just be vague and say you aren't available those dates (as you did) and they will accommodate.

Does your status go from preliminary review to interview or is there a step in between

By the way...does anyone know if Stritch is rolling basis? Now I'm also worried about interviewing later = disadvantage.

Yeah just tell them I'll come in on those dates and see if they can give you another! Haha 🙂

II today! OOS, LizzyM 66

Can anyone who has already interviewed describe what their day was like? Just want to get some insight about what to expect.

Your day starts around 9am meeting in the Stritch lobby with about 15 other candidates. Then, you have a brief intro from some admissions staff while you eat a light breakfast and coffee(with healthy options!). During this intro, you get your interview schedule. You have two back-to-back 50 minute interviews--the first is open file (they see everything) and the second is partially open (everything but MCAT/GPA). That being said, both care 0% about your grades and MCAT at this point--those got you in the door, now they want to talk about your experiences. Both my interviewers were extremely friendly and conversational, and both knew my file WELL. They asked great specific questions about what I'd done, and probed me a little bit about what I see for myself in the future, how I align with their mission, and my thoughts about the future of medicine and health care. For this, I can truly say I was just being myself and they weren't pushing me or challenging me, they were just interested in learning more, which I appreciated. Everyone has a different interview schedule, and you have to find the rooms yourself (one of mine was in a different building). You meet for lunch with current students (salad or sandwich option) and get a campus tour. Everyone meets again around 2:30 for a brief exit survey. The day feels quite long, but it was my favorite interviewing experience so far. Hope that helps!

Also info for everyone: Admissions informed us they only meet to decide acceptances for 3 dates: October 15th, December 15th, and February 15th. So if you're an Oct. 16th/17th interviewer, don't panic after 6 weeks of not hearing anything.

Small detail but the "15 other candidates" only applies to weekend interviews, unless they changed something since last year. If you're interviewing on a weekday you'll be in a group of around 4 people.

There were about 15 of us today.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation! This was really helpful in knowing what to expect.

Ugh submitted 8/23 but MCAT score (510) didn't come in until 9/8. Been under review. Want an II so bad. I really like this school. Impatient. 🙁

when did you take your MCAT?
Aug 5. Had a previous score so was able to do everything before my score came in. Thankfully, 510/83rd percentile. App was submitted August 23 or so, and marked as complete when my score came in on Sep 8.

Better went from a 31 to a 513...so I guess it was worth it.
