2015-2016 New York University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@theo177 I also have the waitlist check. I doubt it means we're waitlisted outright seems way too early for that. My guess is it's more of a hold to revisit the app at a later adcom meeting. But maybe that's wishful thinking??

To everyone concerned about the Waitlist thing you're seeing... I wouldn't worry about it.
Techinically by AAMC standards no medical school can release an admissions decision before October 15th. Which means we're still 2 weeks out from the earliest possible decision date. I'm guessing it's probably just a default that happens after you've interviewed.
Again, this is just my opinion. I could totally be wrong. But I personally see no reason to worry about it yet. 🙂

Interviewed 9/14, I do not have any wait-list checkmark. Maybe they haven't got to my application yet?

Guys PLEASE calm down. What is it with people working themselves up over this kind of stuff? Is it enjoyable in some twisted way?? 😕

We have no idea what they do behind the scenes or what glitches the system might have. Who cares if one guy has it and the other people don't. Post-interview decisions at NYU are typically released in mid-Nov. until then, nobody knows nothing. Stop fussing! Go, like, enjoy your lives in the meanwhile and literally stop screaming and comparing. You'll be healthier that way

First SDN post: Meant to post earlier but got my II!! I did get it about 2 weeks ago and complete Aug 27th. Scheduled for Oct 28th and Lizzy score ~72

You know they usually make decisions as soon as 2 weeks post interview.
Too much of a generalization; every school is different. There is little reason to prescribe to such a notion now when it is still speculation. Too many heart attacks and too much disappointment for a hunch. We'll have to find out in 1.5 months when actual decisions come out

Strange.. I also interviewed earlier this month. No waitlist tab.

It appears there was a glitch in the matrix. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming:whistle:

@avgn just sent the LOI and it's September if you check your calendar:corny:
Lol ok that's even worse...still absolutely unnecessary to send an LOI this early in the season based on a neurotic interpretation of a weird system glitch. If you're actually on the WL, you're gonna stay on the WL. Why would you think they would change their decision so quickly at this stage just because you wrote a love letter?

Are the waitlist checkmarks still up? I checked mine, and do not have one...

To anyone who's interviewed already: how was it? What did you think about the way they did the MMI? This is a super reach school for me and I've got mine on Monday so I'm pretty nervous!

The MMI was pretty fun imo. I enjoyed finally getting to talk about topics other than the usual "Why medicine?" or "Tell me about yourself." The first mini interview might not go smoothly because you're getting used to the format, but don't dwell on it and let it psych you out for the subsequent interviews.

Does NYU offer Friday interviews?
Is it a negative if I have to move my Interview date? will the admissions folks frown on it?

You have to do what you have to do. I think with sufficient notice it absolutely does not burden them. On short notice I think they will still honor your request, though it is probably an inconvenience. I wouldn't think that this influences the selection process in any way, except of course that you will be reviewed later which has its implications with rolling admission.

I moved my interview date like 3 times in one day. The lady was obviously annoyed but I was coming from California so maybe there was some empathy there...also it was like 4 weeks in advance. I mean I got in but maybe it just depends on who you talk to.

Also something I learned today which I thought was interesting - AT Still University from Arizona does 2nd-4th year in Brooklyn at Lutheran, which is now NYU Lutheran. So I guess they technically have half a DO school now??

This MMI stuff is kinda scary, I don't even know how to prepare. I work well(ish) under stressful situations, but I need a framework to approach it. Got my homework cut out for me.

Don't be so worried. I've had Duke's MMI (and I have NYU's tomorrow) and it was actually a lot of fun. From the comments above it seems like both are really similar in terms of friendliness. They really just want to see how you think through complicated problems (like ethical dilemmas) and communicate your thoughts. Just make sure to say which side you're taking, the pros and cons of both sides, and reiterate your choice. Good luck! You'll be fine!

For those interviewed: Are we allowed the use of a notepad for the NYU MMI? Ignore this post if responding breaks any sort of confidentiality agreement.

you have a piece of paper, but my pen stopped working so I couldn't even take notes 🙄

To those who have interviewed, does NYU do a straight-up MMI? I am just wondering if it is worth reading up extensively on the school as one would to prepare for "why NYU"-type questions. I am not sure if NYU's MMI leaves any room for such interaction, or if it is just based on unrelated prompts. Thanks!

Smh the Twitter chat email NYU sent got me so excited when I saw the notification and sender, but alas...

Did anyone else (not with II) get a twitter chat invite about admissions process and finaid process?! I'm wondering why I received this if I hadn't received an invite? haha

Yeah I got it haha

Dear NYU,
It is cruel of you to send an email that begins
"mehc,

I would like to invite you to..."

...to applicants who have not yet received an II, especially when it's just to a twitter chat and your subject line was too long to display properly on mobile devices (thus the first lines being what are read first).

Sincerely,
mehc012

I was JUST thinking that. My heart jumped, and then crashed through the x floors of my office building. lol

+1.
I had just gotten a coffee and accidentally squeezed too hard.
Poof.

I mean, it's useful info for everyone...these threads are full of people asking for details on
"how many interviews are sent out? How many have been sent out by now? What percentage of people do they interview? Do they go chronologically, or skip around, or assign things to individual reviewers, or..."
and the twitter chat may be a way to answer those questions en masse rather than getting 85,000 neurotic calls in their admissions office every day.

That being said, the presentation was excitement/subsequent-plummet inducing. :biglove::heckyeah::thinking::smack::annoyed: :nono: :wtf:

Ah, well... +pity+

I got the same thing. No II here either. The first part I read was "We'd like to invite you..." Talk about freaking out lol

I received one as well without an II. The worst trick ever on a Friday. 🙂

I came here to see people freaking out about the non-II related email.

I am not disappointed.
I mean, most of those are just annoying, but you have to admit that the phrasing of this one could be very misleading, especially on a mobile device!

Getting it and going: 'gorramit, that was cruel!' is just making conversation; it's a mutual experience.
Getting it and freaking out about 'what it means' once you read it is a bit neurotic.

Either way, posting just to demonstrate how smart you are for not reacting is unhelpful/irritating.

Dude, you are in every forum criticizing people and their reactions/questions. If you don't like what's being said, don't follow the forum or better yet, just don't comment unless it's something helpful.

I didn't say I didn't react. I reacted the same way many others did. The language was annoying and thus I expected a discussion on SDN

Jesus, lighten up. All of yous wound up wayyyyy too tight. I was just as surprised/slightly put off by the email as well. But you gotta admit it's pretty funny that all of us expected this big discussion/complaint-fest on SDN and found one. If that's not even a little bit amusing to you, then idk what to say.

Told you people think you're hostile 😛
