2015-2016 Oregon Health & Sciences University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm kind of curious about my chances here. I don't really like ordering things but OHSU is in my top three. I was accepted last week at LSU in New Orleans, for which I am super grateful so early in the cycle. I came down a year ago to pursue a Master's in biochem at Tulane which I finished this past spring with a 4.0. 516 on the new MCAT, although my undergrad GPA isn't that impressive (~3.4 double history and poli sci major with the full gambit and then some of premed course work) and I am a bit older (29).

About two years of research experience, extensive shadowing over the years (rounds and surgery observation), five plus years of sustained volunteer work (non-clinical) and great LORs - or at least the writers gave me that impression. Grew up in Wisconsin, currently an La resident (which makes tuition at LSU a little bit closer to reasonable), but I know that OHSU is a fantastic school. I have many friends in the PNW and could easily see myself setting up shop there for the duration of my medical career. I submitted 8/24 and I'm still waiting. Thought about calling, but seeing as they seem to be rolling through all the billions of apps they got, I think I'll wait.

Anyone with thoughts on an OOS application with my numbers?

Best of luck to everybody!

Below are the criteria for Mission Based groups. Last year, you did not get even get an interview unless you qualify as one of these groups. Based on your OOS GPA and MCAT, you don't qualify for that group, and based on what I can see from your EC's, I don't see "significant experiences in healthcare, leadership, EC's, or community service" that would make you stand out significantly from other OOS applicants, although you can probably tell yourself whether that is true. So unless you applied for a dual degree program, the diversity group would be the other place you could fit in as a mission based applicant, but as I don't know those things about you, you'll have to figure that out yourself! Basically, if you don't fit in one of these groups, you probably won't get an interview. But if you do, keep waiting! Good luck!
  • Residents of Oregon.
  • Non-resident applicants with Oregon Heritage. The School of Medicine uses the Oregon Heritage Policy for student selection, but it is not used as a basis for determining residency, and therefore the tuition a student pays. Oregon Heritage is defined as 1) A student with one or both parents residing in Oregon at the time of application, 2) A student who graduated from high school in Oregon with at least two years of attendance at a high school in Oregon, or 3) A student who graduated from an Oregon institution of higher education with a bachelor’s or advanced degree with at least two years of attendance at an institution of higher education in Oregon.
  • WICHE-Certified residents of Montana and Wyoming.
  • Applicants applying to the M.D./Ph.D. Combined Degree Program.
  • Applicants applying to the M.D./M.P.H. Combined Degree Program.
  • Non-resident applicants with superior achievements in academics and other related experiences. For the 2016 cycle, superior academics is defined as a cumulative Total GPA, as reported by AMCAS, of 3.70 or higher, and a cumulative score of 32 or higher (for MCATs taken from January 1, 2013 through January 31, 2015) or 513 or higher (for MCAT2015) on the most recent eligible MCAT. Superior achievements is defined as significant experiences in healthcare, leadership, extracurricular activities, and/or community service activities.
  • The School of Medicine Admissions Committee fully recognizes the importance of diversity in its student body and in the physician workforce in providing for effective delivery of health care. Accordingly, the OHSU School of Medicine strongly encourages applications from persons from all socioeconomic, racial, ethnic, religious, and educational backgrounds and from persons from groups underrepresented in medicine.

How soon do you get an answer regarding interview/hold/ rejection after secondary application review has been completed?

A friend of mine told me she was complete last year in September, but didn't get an interview invite until January. It's a long cycle!

Can anyone give a brief synopsis of the interview day?

8AM - orientation
9:30AM - MMI circuit
12PM - Lunch and Schnitzer tour with current students
1:15PM - Information session

Day wraps up around 2:30

They give you a tram coupon and instructions for a self-guided tour if you want to explore the other campus

Finally complete! Submitted my secondary on 8/26. I am in the game now! 😉
Oh goodness, that a long time 🙁 I submitted my secondary 9/28, and they said 12 weeks until they review it. Still hoping for an interview though!

Are the people that are now just getting complete after like 2-3 months OOS? I heard OHSU completes IS people much faster even if they turn in their secondary much later?

I am OOS. I submitted secondary late August and committee letter mid-September and I was just marked complete this week. I don't know if they process the applications any faster for IS, but my current status on the portal says they aren't going to evaluate non-mission-based groups for interviews until January...

I'm OOS, submitted 09/08 and am not complete yet. :-(

I'm also OOS, submitted 09/09, not complete.
My friend (IS) submitted late sept, complete early oct.

Serious lurker here, popping in to say I was accepted this week. I hope to see all of you next fall!

Complete 8/25, interviewed 10/14, status updated 11/10 (e-mail 11/11... appropriate).
31 MCAT, 3.93 sGPA, 3.89 cGPA. Non-traditional in-state applicant.

OOS, submitted 7/30, complete 8/20. Patiently waiting until January...

I was also accepted last week on 11/13! In-state, Non-traditional. Median GPA/Scores.
Application complete 8/2, interview 9/16.
Only wanted to post to give y'all a heads up - I was initially placed on hold after my interview on 10/19, then accepted 11/13 and was completely surprised since I didn't anticipate hearing anything until April 30. Good luck to everyone, Hope to be classmates next year!

Let the compulsive portal checking begin.... Lol

Just out of curiosity, where do you see this on the portal? I'm also OOS and submitted late August but the info on my portal page seems super generic. Just says it can take up to 12 weeks for files to be processed.

I was just marked complete last week and submitted my secondary on 8/26. When they have processed you, the 12 week statement is replaced by what was written in the previous post.

That must be a relief. I submitted 09/08 so hopefully I'm anxiously awaiting complete status!

I'm definitely glad to finally be complete after checking the portal obsessively for months. Haha. 😉 But honestly, I'm not super optimistic about my chances as an OOS applicant... We'll see! Hope you're complete soon!

congrats and thanks for letting us know 🙂
My timeline and stats, FYI:

Secondary submitted: 7/23/15
Interview: 9/30/15
Status update via portal (Hold Pool): 10/30/15

IS; 3.80 cGPA; 3.61 sGPA; 511 MCAT

Overall tremendous interview day, school is very impressive, as are the people running it. Students seem happy, but motivated. MMIs are no joke around here, but certainly serve a good purpose. Hope to hear before April, but definitely worth the wait!

Hey all thought I would drop in and let everything know I just got accepted after being put on hold! So not everyone on hold is going to have to wait until April this year!!!! Cross your fingers! I am so excited this is my top choice school! Can't wait to start!

Hey guys, can anybody point me to OHSU's COA for 2015-2016 please? For example, at VCU it is: http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/studentaffairs/financial_aid/cost_attendance/#out

I can't seem to find this data anywhere besides on the MSAR, which is always slightly off from the actual numbers. I'm sure it's hidden away somewhere on their website, but I could only find their estimated tuition/fees (not COA) here: http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/education/sc...ic-programs/md-program/admissions/tuition.cfm

II on 11/24, OOS! LizzyM 70-72, been complete since August. For all of you OOS applicants, keep your head up, I had almost given up on this place and was shocked when I saw.

Good for you! Twelve weeks since completion is quickly approaching...

It's been just over 12 weeks since I submitted my secondary and I'm still not complete! Trying to keep my head up though.🙂

I'm interviewing at OHSU on the 18th this month! Could anyone please describe how their interview day was? What was your impression of the MMI? Conversational or 8 minute monologues? I know you all probably signed a non-disclosure agreement, but any thoughts on it would be helpful!
