For current students... Have you seen a trend of more people living on the East side since the Tilikum Bridge opened? Seems to me like that would be the most cost effective thing to do.
I'm not a current student, but an incoming class of 2020. I just got a house in Milwaukie, which is a super cheap area compared to the rest of Portland. They just put in the new max orange line with the Tilikum bridge. I live right next to the furthest stop on the line (relative to OHSU) and the train ride is only 22 minutes and is essentially a door-to-door service.

Props...I'm over here just trying to pay for lunch and the occasional interview...you bought a house!

Apparently I was rejected 3 weeks ago. Thanks for letting me know OHSU...

(OOS, but I had the stats for the mission group.)

Does the portal usually update on Friday? Does anyone know when their ADCOM meetings are? I'm just so tired of checking so much...

I had heard that ADCOM meetings are on Thursdays, but there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason as far as when announcements come out on portal. Most commonly Fridays, but it looks like there's also been updates throughout the week.

They do meet on Thursdays and they process the scores on Fridays. Sometimes it takes them longer to do so and you may know about your decision on a Monday or a Tuesday.

Can any current students speak about OHSU's financial aid? It seems like it's mostly loans, regardless of IS or OOS.
I've been wondering about this for a while as well. It seems a bit odd to me that according to the MSAR the average graduate debt for OHSU is $217K, which is considerably higher than most schools (highest of all the schools I applied to, actually) when most of the students that matriculate are IS and get cheaper tuition. Compare that to many private schools that charge $55-60K per year yet the average grad debt is lower.

Anybody understand this phenomenon? Poorer people go to OHSU and so need to borrow more? OHSU just doesn't give out as many grants and scholarships? Something else?

Hey Breakneck

Mine currently says the same thing as yours. But for about the past 4 months it has said that I am on hold for an interview and they will reevaluate my application at a future time, yadayada decision will be made by February.

Who knows what it all means. Just try not to worry. Good luck.

My status was like this since September after submitting my supplement so I assumed I was not going to be offered an interview. I was especially discouraged since I work at OHSU and saw multiple interview candidates. However, last week I was offered an interview. They gave me 3 dates in March as options so I get the feeling they are now re-evaluating everyone so if you are still in status limbo hopefully you hear something within the next week or two! Good luck!

April 3oth will be a very stressful day....Also I bet there is a crazy amount of moving around after that based on people who get acceptances elsewhere and what not.

April 30th
On that day they either accept, reject, or put you on a ranked wait list if you were in the hold pool

Thanks!
I'll def be withdrawing based on my conversations with current students, but part of me just wants to know if they want me anyway.

Could you expand on this? Do you no longer like the school, why?

I just don't think the school is a good fit for me. Current students were talking about how administration was pushing towards mandating lecture attendance, flipped classroom initiatives, and they also complained about how they felt they were being micromanaged too much. They also have exams every Friday, which is great because your weekends are free, but horrible during the week. I study much more efficiently independently and would rather study a decent amount every day and have a better work/life balance rather than a ton during the week and not at all on the weekend. It's a great school and the students seem happy, but it's just not for me.

I don't have much personal experience with this (thank god for MD/PhD funding), but my impression has always been that there is very little scholarship money at OHSU. Most students rely on loans only, and there are always a few IS students who choose other schools because their OOS attendance elsewhere is actually cheaper than IS tuition at OHSU.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great school. It's just not a cheap one.

From my understanding most of the scholarship money goes into the Scholars for a Healthy Oregon initiative (full ride, NHSC-like funding for primary care, commitment to stay in Oregon and practice at designated sites). Other than that, I don't think there is much non-loan funding out there.

Congrats to all accepted!

Just got my acceptance email 2/22 on the day I decided not to check my email! Unreal. OOS, interviewed 1/13

Has anyone started look for housing? Any suggestions for couples on the hunt for long-term leases with space for a little one (small homes??) down the road?

Hi there! I'm on hold but work at OHSU. For small houses near OHSU I would suggest looking in the Terwilliger/Hillsdale area, Lair Hill, Corbett or just across the river towards Milwaukee since the orange max connects to CLSB now.

Anywhere out towards Beaverton/Hillsboro will make your commute a tad difficult. But buses like the 68 connect Goose Hollow (blue max to Beaverton Hillsboro connects there) straight to OHSU...also the B loop streetcar connects certain areas of the East side to OHSU. Hope this helps a little!!

@green113 it does! I am liking the Terwilliger area a lot--nice, full of options, and near nature. Truthfully, on interview day we were pleasantly surprised at how accessible Marquam Park is to just about everything. Hiking opportunities abound!

Thanks for the help. I hope we get to be classmates! 🙂

Definitely nice having the outdoors close! And thanks, I hope so too 🙂

I am also on hold here and work at OHSU! I currently live just on the other side of the NW hills, and if you stay on the west side and move away from the city, I highly recommend staying close to any of the MAX lines! It will cut down your commute considerably 🙂 Same for the East side really but I can't speak to that personally 🙂

MAX over car? How is the traffic near the medical school?

Traffic can be pretty heavy depending on the time of day, but the problem is parking. It's something like a 5 year wait list to get a parking permit, and the daily rates are pretty pricey, about twice the cost of a two way MAX/bus ticket - and the discount for yearly/seasonal Trimet passes is something like 70% off. Also, street car is free for students. Financially, Trimet or biking is really the way to go.

5 years, WOW! And I'd imagine daily rates would be steep. Well we were thinking about sharing a car between us, but now we might just ditch it altogether in favor of public transportation. We're big on biking, too, so that's another plus in the ol' book of OHSU pluses! 🙂 Can't wait to start in Fall, and I'm pulling HARD for all of you nice people waiting!

Thanks kindly for your tips 🙂

I have my interview next month but I also work at OHSU and I live on the East side right off the Ross Island bridge, about an 8 minute walk to the Orange Line/Tillikum Bridge. Has worked pretty well for me as it is very easy to get to the waterfront and to the Tram!

Does anyone know if OHSU provides feedback if a rejection is given pre-interview?

I believe it's via portal

Edit: Misread your post, I thought you meant "notice" when you said "feedback." That being said, I do not know. I plan on calling them if I do receive a rejection so I'll let you know.

^helpful....

I'm not sure if they do, but if you get an answer make sure to post, i'd like to know as well especially if we were on hold (close enough to be strongly considered, seems like they would actually have some feedback)

Can anyone give me the email address of the Dean of Admissions, Mark A. Richardson?
Thanks!

Nope, but I think it was said earlier that the committee meets on Thursdays and posts to the portal on Fridays. This should be the last wave.

Oh? How come?
I've just kind of got a unique situation (don't we all?). I'm a veteran with 7 years of service and a small family to take care of, so I think the military medical school (USUHS) is probably my best bet. I love Oregon and know it is a great place to live, but I'm also excited at the prospect of hitting the road again and seeing more new places. I'd probably still try and go here, but I just think the amount of debt I would amass from living in expensive Portland, likely with no scholarships/grants since OHSU doesn't give many out, would be too much. On top of that OHSU is mostly geared towards producing primary care physicians. Nothing wrong with that, and I very well may go into primary care, but massive debt and the lower pay of primary care is a tough combo.

A lot of this decision is timing too. If I had gotten an interview here earlier and, by some amazing stroke of fortune, accepted, then the financial aid office would have had time to process my information and make me an offer before the deadline to only hold a place at one school. Really doubt that's going to happen now, and I'm feeling the need to start making some definite plans with summer drawing closer.

Not trying to put the school down or anything. It truly is a great school, but I'll probably be better off elsewhere. Best of luck to all of you with the rest of the cycle.
