2015-2016 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What do you guys generally think about taking step 1 after year 3? (since this is the plan for class of 2020 and perhaps other classes thereafter)?
I don't mind it-ish. I think having more time to study and added clinical knowledge can be helpful, but who I network with/electives/order of rotations etc would be different if I score 220 on Step vs 260. It would be nice to know my score before 3rd year. And then you take Step 2 basically right after. --> Not a plus, but not a reason not to chose Penn State. Still loved the school

I'm friends with the med student son of a med school program director at a school that does Step after 3rd year. He said that so far the data shows a little bit of improvement, but the sample size is so small that there is no way to make a conclusive statement as to whether or not it is better or if the students admitted are just getting stronger. The program director's son chose to take it 2nd year fwiw

Congrats on the II!! Did you notice by any chance if your updated transcript appeared on the portal document status page? I sent a transcript a week ago, but am unsure if PSU received it. Thanks!
Sorry for the late response but no I did not see it updated on there. I just called admissions a couple of times to make sure they received it. It did take about 10 days after I sent it for them to process it and I live about an hour away.

Does anyone know anything about the 3 year Medical school 3 year family medicine residency program beyond the general info on the brochure? I am genuinely considering it.

What if someone starts the program and soon discovers they would like to do a different speciality. Can they change their speciality or are they stuck with family medicine?

I'm pretty sure they said that for the 3 year program you get charged for 4 years' worth of tution, but the last year is covered by a full-tuition scholarship (so you pay for 3 yrs). If you don't do family med, you need to pay for that 4th year. Plus it will probably be hard to match non-FM specialties if you don't switch out of the 3yr program before you finish?

For people who used student housing for the night before the interview, how long after filling out the housing survey did it take for them to contact you about who you'd be staying with?

Actually, the student contacted me pretty much less than a week before my interview (I didn't get a confirmation or anything after submitting the form). It didn't work out because of the blizzard for me but I did have a hotel before the student even contacted me just in case. But most students seem to want to be able to host, so if you have a hotel that you can refund like 36 hours before, that would be safest.

Yes, I've been on hold for quite some time. IS LizzyM 67.

That's awesome! Congrats! Looks like a slight chance might be available for those of us who have been on hold

where do you guys see your application status? because I haven't heard anything from Penn at all and I am getting really worried that maybe my application isn't complete or something. Thanks!

This program will be discussed at Second Look Day by the family medicine MD who runs it, if you happen to be coming 😉

Yes I am coming. The program sounds pretty interesting. I love family medicine but I'm not 100% sure about committing this early on. Thank you!!

One more thing. So if we get the email about the second look day, does that mean they have received our snail mail reply form? I just want to double check because I'm not comfortable with snail mail.

Anyone else still waiting on a decision after interview from mid-December?

Got the hold e-mail :\, interviewed 1/27. Really sad :[ hope this isn't the end for me.

Congrats! Do you mind sharing stats. IS/OOS?
I'm OOS, MCAT 504, science/cumulative GPA ~3.75, 4000+ clinical hours and 200+ volunteer hours. Not sure what dates they had open. I declined the II because I got into my IS school. Good luck to everyone! 🙂

have any January interviews heard back yet? getting antsy
I got a hold email about two weeks ago, interviewed 1/15.

I love this school. Any idea when Hold List movement occurs, anyone?

The Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application and interview evaluations and placed your file on the “Hold List”. This designation indicates that your credentials warrant further consideration as the remainder of the applicant pool is evaluated. You should be aware that a subsequent decision will be based on the information presently contained in your file with the exception of updated official transcript records.

Should your application remain active beyond the AMCAS reporting date of April 30, 2016, you will remain in the Hold category. If there are withdrawals prior to the start of classes, you may be considered for a position in the Entering Class of 2016. During this period it is important that the Office of Admissions has an updated mailing address and phone number where you can be contacted.

You will be promptly informed when a further decision is made. Due to the large number of applications, we encourage you to wait for this notification rather than call for information on your status.

We appreciate your interest in The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine."

does the pre-II hold even mean anything positive at this point?

still patiently waiting for something...

Just got offered a II. Any idea of the turnover for interviews this late in the season?

In other words, if I interview next Friday, how long should I expect to wait until I hear back from them?

Thank you! And yes, I was put on hold I believe in November.

I'm IS, as well. Non-Trad applying with a 31 MCAT/3.75 undergrad GPA (and 4.0 after 1 y ear of a master's program). I actually interviewed at Penn State two years ago, was put on the waitlist but wasn't pulled from it.

Sorry about that having a bad morning. I quickly misread your post as arrogant and it was not at all. Congrats and please accept my apology. I hope it goes well.

No worries, early morning misreads are a common thing. And thank you, too!

I interviewed in mid February and they told me 6-8 weeks.

What is the likelihood of receiving an interview invite after being placed on pre-interview hold?
Do they still have any interview spots open?
Just out of curiosity, when did you submit your secondary?

Pre-II hold. Has anyone gotten an II from such a status previously?
