2015-2016 Pennsylvania State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
when did you interview in January? have you heard back?

1/15, and they emailed me on 2/15 to put me on the hold list. Maybe not hearing back yet is a good sign. They already looked at me and passed me over once. I don't know. I just really want to go here.

Hmmm they're well into Feb. and I haven't heard anything (Jan. 13 interview).

I just know that Dr. Levi loved me, while the other physician not so much. I don't know how much weight that's going to have.

how were you guys able to send thank yous post interview? I can't find any email addresses online

Any interview invites from Penn state recently? Haven't seen anything after March 2nd.

just got put on hold

"The Admissions Committee has completed a thorough review of your application and has placed it in the “Continue to Review” category. Your application will be reviewed periodically during the remainder of the process until a decision is made whether you will be invited for an interview at a later date or not."

So I just interviewed and was wondering if they accept letters of intent BEFORE telling you whether or not you've been rejected/waitlisted/accepted.

I've always heard that the letter of intent is for when you are wait listed only, and that sending a letter of intent too soon in the cycle and/or before you hear back after an interview can be off-putting, appear insincere, or do nothing to help your chances of getting in.

The reason I ask is because I do hold an acceptance at another school, but I do know for a fact that I would attend Penn State if accepted and I feel like making that clear to them is important given how late it is in the cycle.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I sent an update after interviewing and they replied saying that such letters would not be considered until April 30th if your application is still active. They only accept official transcripts as updates during the application cycle.

Thanks for the info! Just another quick question: Where do I send an official transcript update to them?

I assume the following mailing address:

Office of Medical Student Admissions, H060
Penn State College of Medicine
500 University Drive
P.O. Box 850
Hershey, PA 17033

Does anyone know the schedule for second look?

I just received an II today with the hold being given back in November or October. What are the chances of this being a non waitlist interview? Does anyone have any idea?
Any idea how many more interview days remain?

I was taken off hold two weeks ago, and interviewed last Wednesday. There were 11 of us there, which to me felt like a high number of interviewees for it to have basically been a waitlist-only interview.

Also, they didn't treat it any different than any other interview day. Though I have no idea if they would reveal the purpose of any particular late interviewing cohort on interview day.

I was going to, but apparently they won't accept letters of intent before April 30th

I am a re-applicant. Undergraduate GPA: 4.0, MCAT: 29, and Graduate GPA: 3.9. I was complete in early October, and got the II late February.
Damn that's strong! Good luck for you interview/ hope it went well!

How do international applicants hear back about post-interview decisions? Mail like everyone else?

According to the new MSAR, they continually review wait listed students throughout the cycle and they accepted 25 people off the waitlist last year.
I am not waitlisted. I am just on hold pre II and I am hoping they actually interview me and was wondering what the chances of that were!

May be a good idea to call the admissions and ask if they are still giving out IIs .

Does anyone know approximately how many people off the post-II hold list end up getting accepted?

Post-II hold. Very sad about this one

Did they fix the additional info tab glitch? I haven't seen it being mentioned for a while on this thread.

Just curious, did anyone get offered a deferred acceptance if they'll participate in the committee that's looking at changing the curriculum? I checked off that I would consider this on my secondary just in case (was accepted outright though) -- maybe people waitlisted will be considered for this. Sure, it's an extra year but with guaranteed acceptance to the entering class of 2017.

I believe everyone considering the SDP program has had to outright earn an acceptance first like every other applicant. I do not believe they offer a deferred acceptance, it is up to the accepted student to decide if he/she will choose to defer in order to participate in this program. They are looking for students who will willingly want to be apart of medical education reform thus they are not offering an acceptance in exchange to be in this program (that would kind of be like bribery) 🙂

That being said, if some of the current accepted students decide to participate as a SDP it potentially could open up some spots for the current incoming class of 2016. They are choosing 6-8 students to become SDPs (student design partners) off the currently accepted pool in the incoming class of 2016 very soon (from those who said they were interested). The SDP candidate weekend is coming up on 03/31-04/01 after which I believe the SDP committee will choose those 6-8 students to be SDPs.

For those of you [including me] on the "continue to review" aka pre interview hold, they said the last day they are extending out interview invites are wed/thursday. I just called and asked.
Thanks for calling ! Hope some of us will get those last IIs.

got an II at around 8 in the morning yesterday after being on hold since November. The only date open to interview was march 30th. I am not sure if they only open up few interview dates at a time or not. Also does anyone know when is the last day Med schools have to give you a response if you interviewed?

Congrats! And March 30th is the final interview day, hence why it's the only one still listed.

I believe by April 30th schools must either accept, reject, or wait list students who interviewed.

That's good to know! thanks! At least for the march 30th people the wait for hearing back wont be too long.

9 weeks and 4 days since my interview, should I be worried? (Jan. 13 interview).

Correct me if I'm wrong but this school only accepts via snail male. I think other decisions are emailed. It may be a good sign that you haven't heard back but at the same time I would call to make sure whether a decision has been made or not (if they're receptive to that).

I'd like to think Penn State would use female snails as well, to deliver acceptances.

Seriously though, I think the only exception may be when they need to find out fairly quickly if someone would accept an offer after being on the waitlist, they'd probably just email or call since that will be happening in May.
