2015-2016 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
High priority waitlist. got the email at 4pm. IS interviewed 9/23. they said last year that there was less WL movement than last year. anyone knows roughly how many people get off of HPWL?

Better than alternate WL or a rejection... they gave 400 acceptances last year according to the adcom at interview... since upstate has a class of 155, that means that 245 will be taken off the waitlist

Accepted via portal as well!!! In state, interviewed 9/23. Congrats to everyone else accepted today and good luck to everyone still waiting to hear!

Proud of my 9/23 people! Congrats to all who were accepted and to those who were not yet, don't lose hope! Maybe some of us will be classmates 🙂

That is not necessarily true. They definitely accept more than 155 off the bat. I am not sure of the exact numbers, but I'd say they accept 250-300 people, and the remaining 100-150 come off the waitlist. Most schools operate this way.

how do you know that? that seems really risky for schools to do

I've heard adcoms mention it during interviews, seen adcoms discuss this hear over the years, and I heard this from other med students (live and on SDN). Its common knowledge. For example, Columbia P&S accepts ~250, then another ~100 as the cycle moves on.

I've also repeatedly read several times (on SDN and on a few admissions pages on FB from schools like Hopkins) that no one knows exactly how the Deans match up the numbers, but year after year they never oversubscribe the class. These places have tons of statistics and know well how many of the accepted will actually matriculate and what portion to keep as a backup via the waitlist.

I'm not going to search for direct links now, but if I casually come across a few to support this I will paste them here.

Other veteran SDNers can verify this. @WedgeDawg

Schools generally accept more than the number of seats they have and then will accept more from the waitlist in May+

The number thrown around is 2x but it can range from probably 1.5-3x overall.

woo accepted via portal yesterday afternoon! IS, interviewed 9/23

I interviewed on 9/16 and my portal has been blank since last Monday. Do you think it would be wise to call to make sure everything with my app is fine (i.e. my campus preference selection went through) or should I wait at least until the end of the day to see my decision?

I dont know if this has been posted earlier, but does anyone know the stats of roughly how many people end up on the HPWL and how many people get in from there and is everyone ranked on there?

I don't know the stats for HPWL but I remember one of the admissions people saying that if you're on HPWL you have a good chance, but if you're on a regular WL you are very unlikely to get looked at, and haven't been in at least the past 3 years.

The waitlist is dependant on each year. All they said was that all you can do is check up in march/april for further information

ya ive looked at some past threads and i think roughly 50% get off which is pretty good but far from a guarantee. it also seems like very few people get put on the low priority alternate list or rejected, and most people just get accepted and go to HPWL

I interviewed at 2 other allopathic schools besides SUNY Upstate but I must say this school was my favorite. I really want to get in here!!! Interviewed 11/11 so I got a while to go 🙁

Does the portal change only for those who have been accepted? Or does it change for everyone who got a decision?

PORTAL CHANGE!!! Just now. Interviewed 9/30. Fingers crossed for hopefully my first good news.

How long post portal change did you guys wait to get your decisions?

Wish they weren't so far behind..i'm in the 10/21 group.. looks like i'll have to wait several more weeks 🙁

This is kind of late.... but I know SUNY Buffalo does it the way I mentioned: accept few people and take many off the wait-list. I assume Upstate would be the same because the word on SDN is that SUNYs do not do rolling admissions

I heard during my interview that SUNY SB actually is rolling. I was very surprised by this because all of the others are not 😳

I interviewed 9/28 and I had a portal change on Monday, 11/9/15 and it changed again with an acceptance on Thursday, 11/12. My acceptance letter was dated 11/10/15. Hope it helps!

I'm sure someone has asked this already, but for those of you on pre-interview hold, does that status show up anywhere on your portal? Mine doesn't.

Been refreshing this page non stop to see when acceptances come out today, came across your latest post, and its not about acceptances. Heart samk 🙁

Since it's closer now, anyone interviewing here on 12/9?
I'm interviewing 12/9 as well. Any idea if December is considered late for Upstate? I assume they still have open spots or they wouldn't waste their time... But are the odds a little worse?

Anyone know how likely it is to get off of pre-interview hold? I was placed on hold awhile back, is there anything I can do...?

Mine doesn't show up on the portal either.

Thats interesting. i did hear UB is usually conservative with acceptances and likes to take off of waitlist but im not sure for the other suny schools. it seems like at upstate a lot of people are getting in which is making me feel less confident about being on the hpwl

the things is though that Upstate and Downstate are suppose to emulate SUNY Buffalo... so IDK man GL

i guess thats better for people on the WL. i called on monday and they said they cant give any info about the waitlist until the spring. didnt the admissions say they didnt get very far down the waitlist last year?

they said that compared to previous years, they are accepting less and less off the wait-list - because of the obviously heightened competition for a medical school spot

Placed on the HPW.
Anyone knows how this list works? Do they pull applicants in order or based on their "ranking" within the list?

There is still hope! As far as I know the list is not ranked. If you show interest your chances are moe likely of getting accepted. Also, if you switch your campus preference your chances probably inrease becaue the Binghamton campus is less competitive.

May I ask, when and how did you find out about your decision?

I got an email today. Interview day same as yours on 9/30. The only thing that bothers me or makes me nervous is that they dont accept/consider updates once you are placed on the list. So I was wondering if they pull based on who was placed on the list first (similar to first come first serve) or who they like better (ranking).

I'm not sure it's late, I mean the date I originally had was 2/3 and I took an opening by sheer luck to move it up to December. Are you local?

Yes you are ranked on this list. At the interview they said there's a pretty good chance that HPW get a call (depending on your campus choice). I.e., if a Binghamton spot opens up and you chose Syracuse only then you won't get a call, etc. They also said that they maybe take 2-3 max off (if any at all) of the regular waitlist -- so you should feel good IMO.

i remember them being very optimistic about the hpwl on interview day but i called this monday and they said some years not too many people come off so you never know. i also think the hpwl has a lot more people than the lpwl

So, I assume there is unlikely to be any decisions going out next week?
