2015-2016 SUNY Upstate Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wasn't sure if they were going to ping pong with us. Some schools apparently stare at you and contribute nothing to the overall conversation.
Not sure about other schools but the MMI here is pretty sweet. It's totally laid back, everyone is super friendly, and I ended up having a lot of cool conversations that I wish I could have continued, but alas, the timer cut them short.

That makes me feel soooo much better. Thank you for sharing your experience 😀

Just got a call from MD/PhD admissions that they will be mailing me an interview invite! Very excited, I love upstate NY. LizzyM 71, complete 8/4

Great meeting you all today, fellow 10:00 am interviewees!

This one is my first interview on Wednesday. SO nervous 🙁
I just feel like I'll run out of things to say and end up staring at the interviewer for 3 minutes...

Is Upstate ok with us leaving our bags in the admissions office if we are leaving immediately after?

Was just looking at last years thread..looks like this is a big week for hold status and II's.

Just received my first II here! Complete the last week of July

Edit: Very happy about receiving the interview, but also nervous about the MMI, especially since this will be my first. Can someone who already attended this year (or previous years) share his or her experience?

Current MS1.
I felt very relaxed about the MMI format during my interviews. At the start of the day I was nervous too, but upon seeing how easygoing everyone I've encountered was, my stress was definitely blasted away. The MMI definitely felt more natural than a traditional interview. There is no real way to prepare for it so while you are touring the school, try not to dwell on the interviews and instead, get a feel for the place, the people, and the genuine warm welcome you receive. There was nothing more calming than that for me.

I hope any other interviewees today had a nice experience too. Am I remembering correctly that they said that they interview around 750 and admit 400 for an incoming class of around 150? Rounding numbers here.

Had a great time here today! And yes! That's what I remember being told to us!

I think you're about right-their class was 176

Those are comforting numbers. 🙂
Did you happen to get that follow up email from them yet, btw? Never getting an actual II email has me wondering...

I didn't get the email either, but the link to choose a campus is on the portal page

Anyone know if there is a specific time RMSP interviews are done, or are they just interspersed with everyone else?

Was scheduled post-MMI, lunch, and tour for our group. (~2.30)

Was just fact-checking with MSAR (at 6am on a Sunday... sigh...) and saw something about Upstate that surprised me: male/female demographic ratio is 64/36. 99 men, 55 women.

Does anyone know anything about this? I'd been told 60/40 which already seemed high (thus: fact-checking) and had asked a (male) interviewer who shrugged and said, "We'd love to change that but not enough women are applying." That seems unlikely to me, but perhaps it's true and other women know something about this school that I do not?

Hey y'all I have an II from, here and I was told to upload a class list.

I was wondering for the list do I just list off all the classes i am taking on a word document or submit my trasncript?

The male/female ratio in the college of medicine changes every year. The class of 2017 was about 48/52 (slightly more women). The class of 2018 was 66/34 (many more men, the most unbalanced in years). The class of 2019 was 60/40. The administration says that they don't look at gender when they take people off the waitlist.

Ahh the waitlist! That's helpful. Thanks.

Put on pre-interview hold this morning 9/22
Complete 08/06
At least its not radio silence! 🙂

Does anyone know from previous years if people with pre-interview holds ever actually receive IIs?

is RMSP the rural scholars program? I thought you apply for that in the second year?
It is the Rural scholars program, I didn't apply for it but a handful of my fellow interviewees did. I'm not sure of the specifics, just they had a second interview (I'm guessing traditional, not MMI format) which was verbally confirmed three or four times by staff during the day.

For anyone else that had an II, does your folder have a list of students you can email before choosing a campus? Because mine doesn't and I can't decide either way on the campus without some more input.

Can anyone share the experience with the short essay after MMI? Is it hard to come up with a good essay in just few minutes?

Complete Sept. 10

Got the pre-interview hold early this morning. I'll take that as a polite rejection...

Pre-interview hold? where are you seeing your status? or was it by email?

anyone mind explaining how the MMI is supposed to work here? (i know its secret info, etc, and i'm not asking about the questions, but more so about the broader guidelines for how to answer the questions). i've never done an MMI before and i really just want to clarify how it actually works regarding the scenarios: do we have the explain what we would do/one should do in the scenario/prompt to the interviewer or do we act it out? (by acting it out, i am specifically referring to online scenario/prompt types I've found that end with "you are person X.") please forgive me if my question is silly, but i've heard conflicting things and would love to clarify how this interview type works, especially at this school since it's a top choice. thanks!

It'll tell you what to do in the prompt you get before entering the room, but the person inside will also ask to make sure you've understood the question. It's very relaxed

Check in the portal for them.

Hmm, I'm wondering if rejection is hell would the pre-interview hold be purgatory from which there is no hope to escape?

In other words, has anybody ever gotten an interview and acceptance after being placed on pre-interview hold in the past? Has anybody been straight-out rejected yet or is this "hold" actually the rejection?

Can anyone help me with this: What's the best place to fly into? And of the three hotels they recommend, which would you choose?
