2015-2016 Temple University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I wonder if they'll be annoyed that I selected "main campus" for all three... lol.

Maybe not annoyed, but honestly I think that shows some closed-mindedness IMO. I'm pretty sure they wanted you to "rank" them.

Is Temple more of a research or community-oriented school? I know there is a lot of research going on at Temple, but I wrote my Why Temple essay emphasizing their location in Philadelphia and their commitment to the urban underserved population there. Will I get docked if I don't mention research at all in the Why Temple essay?

I dont think there was a character limit. might as well toss it in

I thought about it, but honestly, there's no specific type of research I'm particularly interested in. For example, if my dad suffered through colon cancer, and there was a really big institute for colon cancer, I could talk about my interest in that. Or if I did research on a specific disease in undergrad, I could tie it in to a relevant research project or initiative at Temple, but I didn't do any significant medically relevant research during undergrad. I don't want to just say that I'm interested in research and that there is a lot of it at Temple, because it might come off as disingenuous, and not very memorable for the reader. Or is it perfectly OK to say that I might be interested in research and that Temple offers me opportunities to explore?

Speak from the heart man. If you are really interested in exploring more research, then it is totally okay it mention it. If it is true, then it will come off that way regardless of how much experience you've had.

That's funny...that's the primary interest for why I wanted to go to Temple. From a good friend that lives around there, the university really has done a LOT to clean up the north philly area and the effects are quite noticeable and profound.

Just submitted! I didn't see a link back to the application after making my payment, so i actually had to close the browser and reopen the app. I think i did it right, but their portal seems to a bit more confusing than most. Good luck everyone!

Would you guys say that TUSM is a school that has a heavy emphasis on community service? Or is the emphasis more on research?

I may or may not be interested in pursuing more research, so I don't think I actually know enough/am passionate enough about research to include it in my Why Temple essay. I think I'll briefly mention as a reason I want to stay in the Philly campus, where I'll have more opportunity to do research if I find something that interests me.

Good to know! I'm basing my Why Temple essay on Temple's commitment to the urban underserved.

How long should I aim to make the clinical clerkship essay? I chose the main campus. Mine is only 4 sentences now, basically stating that I want to work with the urban underserved in Philadelphia, and that I will have easier access to research opportunities if I decide to pursue research. Does it have to be really in-depth? Or will this be OK?

Mine is going to end up being about this short. Otherwise, I think it will be too redundant given the first question.

My Clinical clerkships answer was also only about a paragraph, about 4-5 sentences.

Thanks! Submitted my application just now, and my answer was just 4 sentences. Even then, it was redundant with my Why Temple essay.

I put being an eagles fan since 04 in my "Why Temple" essay. Huge McNabb fan back in the day. Plus Foles saved my fantasy team two years ago so...

Still haven't been able to pay them yet... Hopefully I get a response email back soon.

More and more in love with this school but worried that submitting tomorrow will be too late >.<

They didn't send out secondaries until last wednesday. I can't imagine submitting in under 2 weeks can be considered late

Anyone (if current Temple students here plz weigh in) have an opinion on the fact that it seems like you rank the clerkship years and Temple basically decides for you? So you could be sent out to middle of PA even though you don't want to? Or do they generally agree to what you rank?

Just a little confused on the different tracks within each class, any clarification would be helpful, thanks!

Status has changed from "verified" to "under review" on the portal. Interviews coming soon?

Does anyone know the process for how people get sorted into the different clerkships? Will I know if I've been accepted to my top choice before committing to Temple? Depending on what clerkship I get could make or break if I actually want to attend here.

Any info would be great. Thanks!

Do you guys think it is worth it to apply here if my letters don't satisfy their requirements? I could probably get another strong letter (which would give me the last one I require) but it wouldn't be for a while

I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming it would be like "Congrats, you've been accepted to X program." I don't think they'd just spring on you after first year like, LOL HAVE FUN IN RURAL PENNSYLVANIA

This is probably the most biased place to ask people if its worth it since most of us who applied here have decided it's worth it. But here's my two cents...

You have to decide if the school fits you, and no one else can really say that for you. Do your homework. Look at MSAR. If you decide its worth it, give yourself the best chance at actually getting in, i.e. get that letter, and get it ASAP. It's probably not worth your time if you a) don't think its a good fit/don't even want to go here b) don't satisfy the requirements (including letter requirements). IMHO, med schools have no reason to be lenient on rules when there are thousands of other applicants. They can be as selective as they want. If you don't meet the requirements, your secondary fee just becomes a school donation.

Personally, I think it's a great school, I love Philly, and I'm impressed by their community outreach/service programs. Considering the secondary hasn't been available for very long, you've probably got a little bit of time before its too late. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! I'll look more into it

Thoughts on "In the area" emails? I have another interview in philly mid sept. and don't want to buy two flights.

I'm in a similar situation and would be curious to hear any informed opinions. I'm thinking given how recently Temple opened its secondaries, we should give them a week or two to give a chance for II before pestering.

Any suggestions of which clinical experience to choose?

Can any current students speak on the research options? Are these opportunities only offered at the main campus? I'm also interested in the Bethlehem regional campus. Can anyone speak on the cost of living there?

Bethlehem is very affordable, definitely cheaper than Philly and obviously safer.

halfway done with this secondary! describing why which campus is hard! I really like the main campus one because I like more a more urban setting and serving more diverse populations! any other suggestions of what to write for "why which campus"

If you have specific interests, like maybe you play music, are involved in art, tutoring, or another activity, you can look up facilities in Philly that have those activities then say "with my passion for ____, I would love to continue this activity at ______ facility in Philadelphia". I think the specificity is nice for them to see.

So they say they dont accept letters from research PI's as science letters? But what if your PI gave grades for Research for Credit in Biology?

I'm not sure about that.

I guess I'm going to have to call them about this tomorrow ^^^

32 MD schools, I probably could have gotten away with 20-25 but I wanted to apply to a decent amount of reaches 😛

Yea, I applied to 23 MD schools. I have borderline stats, but I dont see how applying to tons of reach schools is going to do me any good. I've already selected a lot of schools that are within my range from the MSAR.

So for these clinical clerkship sites... is the Temple one the only one where they immerse you in patient care day 1? Or do the Luke campus and the Geisinger campus do that as well?

Thats what these videos are making it seem like. The main temple hospital video stresses this one point whereas the other ones do not talk about immersing students in clinical care day 1 at all.

Sorry if this has been clarified before, but when ranking our campus choices do we have to rank all 3? Or can I just rank like st lukes (my top choice) as 1 and 2, and then the main campus as 3?

Can any MS @ TUSM answer information on CSAR ? Is research available / extended to MS's or is it primarily an opportunity for post doctoral / PhD's ?

Hey all, submitting my secondary later today and just wanted some additional info before I hit submit: Does Temple have any research-based programs? I'd like to pursue some research, but it seems like I'll have to pursue this more-or-less on my own. Which is fine, but other schools have distinct research-track programs - wasn't sure if I just missed Temple's or if they support student research through other means.

To answer the posts above... it seems that research is one of their biggest attributes that medical students go for. Thats what I got from their website anyways.
