2015-2016 Texas Tech University - Lubbock Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@swolebrah I would still apply. I have a friend who got in here with a GPA less than 3.2 for this current cycle (actually much less than that...but I don't want to give him/her away) No you may not get in in November, but you have a chance. If you have all the other "check marks" aka research, volunteering, shadowing, etc you're competitive. Lubbock even has an essay that allows you to explain yourself.
Thanks for the encouragement

@swolebrah no problem! I think it's really important to apply to all the Texas schools. This year is going to be really different because of the two new schools and the new MCAT. Schools will be admitting more students (I assume). You never know what they're looking for!

Submitting late June is still a little on the late side. Just FYI
No its not.
Most committees start downloading apps mid-July to early August with first set of interviews in mid to end of August. Lubbock is known to start the process a bit early but not significantly so. And you don't have to be the first batch of people to interview. In fact, in many cases more often than not, the order in which you interview has absolutely no bearing on whether you are more likely to receive a prematch/match/etc. I've been following some profiles from past application cycles and some interviewed in November, aced it, and got prematch while some candidates who interviewed in August did not get any prematch/match despite having 30+/3.7+ stats.

You should submit your application in a reasonable time frame and it should be the best it possibly can be. End of July is fine as well if you are waiting for MCAT scores, etc.

Is any one considering the MD/MPH program or answered the optional question in the secondary essay. Just want to know how long the response have to be.

I have a question regarding the following secondary application question...

"In 500 words or less please describe what you would see as the "ideal" practice for you. (where, type of practice --- clinic, hospital, both, specialty, who would be your patients, etc.)"

Can specialties such as Endocrinology or Neurology work in a rural area/clinic? Or are certain specialties primarily found at major hospitals?
Absolutely! Specialists practice everywhere!

How is the weather in Lubbock, such as frequency of storm, sandstorm, ice, snow, rain, etc?

How important is it to have a garage for car parking to prevent damage by weather (including sunlight)? Thanks!

It's typically sunny. However, if you live in TX currently (and I'm assuming so based off your username, 😛) you know that everywhere was having crazy rains last month, and Lubbs was no exception. Whenever it does rain, it's usually heavy and there'll be some road flooding. Hail shows up every once in a while, a couple times in the past year. We also had some snow days back in late February.

I would say if you have the chance to get a garage, so for it, though it's not the end of the world if you don't.

11d. What motivates you to participate in the FMAT program (300 words or less)?
11e. What experiences have you had that would prepare you for this intensive program (300 words or less)?
11f. What, in your opinion, distinguishes Family Medicine from other medical specialties (300 words or less)?

In the secondary, is 11e. referring to the FMAT program of their medical school program in general? I ask because I don't plan to apply to the FMAT program and am going to leave it blank if its referring to the FMAT program.

Since it's squished in-between two other FMAT Qs, I'd say it's also related.

11 f doesn't necessarily have to be fmat though, I planned on responding to that because primary care is one of my interests, I just don't wanna commit to the three year program.

The people in the admissions office are extremely nice. If you want to be sure, I would call and ask.

Anything on interviews yet? Does anybody know when interview invites should be going out?

[3. Have you experienced any academic road bumps in your academic career (low academic performance, dropping, retaking, or failing courses, etc.)?
4. If so, please explain your circumstance.]

With regards to the "low academic performance" road bump, are they asking about semesters in general or individual classes? I made two B-'s in ochem I and II, so are those grades that I need to discuss in this question?

Hey guys, possible silly question here. On the "favorite recreational/leisure activities" prompt, how many activities did you talk about? I have one that spoke about in great detail, but I'm not sure if I should include more than one. The prompt DID ask for "activities" instead of just "activity", but I'm wondering about the general consensus.

It's only 500 words so I only talked about one

Just curious, but for Question #2 where it states to list your activities, are most people doing bullet points? Or are people listing and then also explaining the activity?

If you want to talk about it, sure.

I basically took my activities from TMDSAS, turned it into a sentence incorporating them, and expanded on the ones I liked most.

I'm a little bit worried about question 2. The only area of interested I have many activities to reference is medical research. For example, all I can say about primary care is that I shadowed an internist and have plans to shadow a pediatrician. Should I be concerned about this?

Honestly, I would say you shouldn't be. My best friend (who is an MS1 at Lubbock) had no primary care interests so he never shadowed or worked with a primary care physician but he was still accepted in their school. I would say just be honest and genuine about your interests.
Also, I have no activities to write in the medical research field bc I haven't ever done research. So that's awesome for you 🙂

Thanks for the response! It was helpful.

I have a question. In the following question:
5. What do you like or dislike most about the area you are from; your hometown (500 words or less)?

Are the area you are from and your hometown two different things?

I took it as the same thing.

Congratulations on the II, Lanoserol and doctororsomething!!

@doctororsomething Do you know when you were marked as complete?

I got the completion email June 30 but haven't heard anything from them ever since. 🙁

I got marked complete July 13th. I honestly was not expecting an interview this early because my secondary was in king of late. I would not worry, the Texas schools seem to offer interviews so randomly.
