2015-2016 Tulane University Application Thread

@chocoholicsoxfan just noticed that quote under your name. that is incredibly awesome. what's that from?
It is actually from the sequel to Anne of Green Gables- Anne of Avonlea! That book series is tied with HP for my favorite and honestly Gilbert Blythe is one of my greatest inspirations and probably put me on the path to wanting to be a doctor when I was 10-11 and read the books for the first time.

Gilbert was hot lol

For the people in my boat (No complete email, red exclamation point): you're fine. I called this morning and was told my application is complete but has not yet gone to committee.
You talked to them? But on the portal, it says

The admissions office does not accept
phone calls, email or communication
regarding the status of your application.

A call is warranted when you think there may be an error with your application (E.g. no complete email despite submitting 2+ weeks ago). I believe that text is discouraging people from calling to find out their admission status.

Oh yeah,it sure as hell discouraged me, though I only submitted on the 10th. I was just worried that they would be angry though.

Did you receive an email that it was being reviewed/green? Or were you checking it manually?
I received an actual e-mail a minute after I submitted my app. Couple days later, the red mark changed into green mark. So the completion e-mail doesn't necessarily means that you have the "green" in progress mark. I guess, it's a mystery to all of us. lol

I was under the impression that going green without an II was that you didn't get an interview on the first pass.

This is just my guess based on me not getting an II and when I submitted/turned green.

This seems likely, although no one was reported any new IIs since the 14th, and since we all changed to a green check mark on the 21st, it stands to reason that someone should have received an II on the 21st. So either no one here got an II or they didn't send any new ones out this week. Who knows!

I still don't have a green check next to the "in progress" area :yeahright:

I'm in the same boat. I completed mine on the 13th, so let's be optimistic!
Haha I'm sure we're okay. I'm closing in on finishing my secondaries so I've had more to time check on the status of all my apps.

Thanks for getting that clarified 👍 Btw, did you check your communication status prior to calling? There might be a message there indicating you are complete.

This was the case for me, no email, but confirmed complete on their portal. Here's the message I have there:

Good morning Mr. Magpie, how are we today? (Dear [applicant],)

We would like to inform you that your application is complete and under review. You will receive another email once a decision is made on your application. We thank you for your continued patience with the application process and we wish you success.

The bold portion implies I should have received this as an email

My in progress status is still in the red (it appears a lot of you got the green). However as wagonwheel pointed out, red just means our app hasn't been forwarded to the committee just yet. Those with you with the green, but no II, are maybe just starting the review process. Due to the volume of apps, this batch might be slower, which could explain no reported IIs here. Let's see what happens with future green in progress people.

@Mr Magpie Nope. Perhaps the system glitched out with my app. I will just trust that, per my conversation with their office, my application is complete. Time to worry about my outstanding secondaries instead...

Is it worth applying to Tulane if I answered NO to all of their questions on the Personal Information tab of the secondary?

Tulane: Are you currently working or have worked for one of the following organizations? (Americorps, Peace Corps, Teach for America)
Me: NO

Tulane: Are you participating or have you participated in a study abroad program at your university?
Me: NO

Tulane: Are you currently volunteering abroad or have you volunteered abroad?
Me: NO

Tulane: Are you currently serving or have served in the United States military?
Me: NO

Tulane: Are you an Eagle Scout or received the Gold Award from the Girl Scouts?
Me: NO

Tulane: Are you fluent in a second language?
Me: NO

I feel like I don't have anything that Tulane is looking for just from the questions that they are asking. Is it still worth applying??? 🙁

For this question:

  • Please list your hobbies and major non-academic interests:
Are they looking specifically for things that you've accomplished? Or can they be just things you enjoy but don't have any achievements in? For example, I like playing the piano, but I haven't played in any competitions. I also like lifting weights, but I've never competed in powerlifting competitions. Can I talk about these things even if I haven't won any achievements in them?

I think so, yes! I believe that the point of a question like this is to see if you are an interesting person or just an academic robot who only knows how to study. If a fellow medical student wanted to relax by trying out some new hobby, what would you be able to introduce them to? Piano and weightlifting sound great. Go for it!

Ok, thanks! Is it better to list three things and describe them briefly, or list three things and go into depth on one of them. I have a somewhat unique hobby that I could describe in-depth. The hobby is fish keeping. I could talk about how it inspired my interest in biology, how I learned about ecosystems, species of fish and aquatic plants, etc. and that this is a hobby that has followed me throughout my life. I feel like it is more unique than piano and weight lifting, too.

This seems like it would be a personal preference. When I answer this type of question I usually pick one or two of my more unusual hobbies to talk about in greater depth, but it probably doesn't matter much one way or the other.

Oops. I took the prompt completely literally and just wrote a list of hobbies and interests (basically a series of short bullet points). Didn't realize it would probably be better to actually describe the things I listed...

I love aquariums too. I wrote about that in the hobbies section. I have a dirted tank now that's raging with plants! Also I am trying to breed some blue rams and to build a jelly fish tank. I have so many tanks spread out through my living room. I'm also part of the local aquarium society of my city😉. Cool to know that there are other fellow aquarists out there.

hmm. if the prompt says list, and applicants get flagged for not going into detail...thats just a bit deceiving...

I'm not quite that involved in the hobby! I just have one planted tank going right now due to space limitations, but love to keep learning. 🙂

I ended up listing three of my hobbies and writing two or three sentences about why it's important to me. Hopefully this is ok!

I bet it is. I also wrote about about 3 hobbies too, and I didn't go into that much details about them at all. I am very passion about all of them , especially the aquarium-keeping, the other two are sports. I have aquariums with exotic frogs, pet turtles and a bunch of exotic plants. While doing research I had to sacrifice and perform surgery in many; but many mice. I don't like to kill living things. I keep a couple of mice as pets, where I provide a very "nice life to them," to regulate my "karma". I just love all animals in general. However, I refrain myself to write about my passion for animals because people often ask me why I did not want to go to veterinarian school.

Are there people here with a green check who took MCAT 2015? Are there people here with an II who took MCAT 2015?

Does anyone know if Tulane autorejcts anyone with <31 MCAT. I have a 30 and I really love NOLA, but I don't want to just throw $125 away

You should invest in the MSAR to see accepted ranges. As far as I know, no.

From the current MSAR, Tulane's 10th percentile MCAT for matriculants is 30, so you're right on the border.

There were people accepted (and that I spoke too) got in with a score below 30. Tulane is pretty holistic !

Ahhh my secondary now says in progress on the status page. I don't remember it saying that last time I checked. Have other people's said that for a long time?

Mine has been in progress since I was marked complete (7/17) but I've still got that red exclamation point... kinda has a Mario Kart look to it.

Nvm, I just read back through the post and realized that isn't really any reason for excitement or anxiety

Ok, I've officially been complete for two weeks. Still no green check! I wish I could call, but it would feel weird with that message there saying the office doesn't accept communications.

I think I have had a green check for two weeks, it is just going to be a long wait.

This thread has been the worst to follow with all the II's already- stupid quarter system and not being able to submit primary until after the quarter was over and grades were posted. With such early II's going out, guess I'll have to turn this one around same day (should be verified today/Monday)
