2015-2016 University of California - Riverside Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those not accepted does anyone know what the admission staff said regarding the wait-list process? I think I recall them saying not to expect movement until May.

Did you get wait listed?

Interviewed mid-October and haven't heard back so assuming I am (I know that UCR doesn't technically place people on a wait-list, that's just what I'm referring to).

Edit: nice pic by the way lol

Considering the few # of interviews/acceptances Riverside gives out, if I didn't receive a secondary request until end of November (completed it within a week), should I just assume that by the time they get to me, most (if not all) spots will be taken?

If they sent you a secondary, eventually some one will get to it. They interview until April.

Just got rejected. This really hurt. I can't believe it. I fit their mission so well. I had one heck of an app and letters of recommendation. :vomit::vomit::vomit::vomit::vomit:😢😢

I'm sorry dolly96 🙁 but I know you will become a fantastic doctor. I was also rejected to my dream school after interviewing and UCR ended up being the place I should have been the whole time. I believe you will have the same experience. In the end we all are going to be doctors 🙂

Any news with this school? still havent heard back s/p interview from 10/01!! I'm assuming I'm waitlisted?

Yeah I'm a scribe. How'd you know lol
Are you thinking about calling? I have alot of personal factors relying on this school. I have no idea what to expect as someone that was a medical student during my interview there told me he didnt get a call until june?

The only pre-meds I know who use "status post" are scribes. And probably just be patient to be honest... That is what I am trying to do

Have you got acceptances elsewhere? I'm accepted into a DO but UCR is #1!

Thank you so much.

Is there anyway to update this school pre-II with semester grades?

I just received a secondary from this school. It is really late in the game...I am assuming they only give secondaries to those who they really consider for an interview??

4 more interview dates left. Interviews until March (not April). Even with the class increase number of UCR alum will remain 24. Contrary to hope, the silence is not pleasant news. It isn't a death sentence either. It just means they aren't head over heels for you. They have a quota to fill by each date, and that's when they start going back and accepting people off of the "waitlist" if those particular applicants have higher application scores. The more recent your interview was, the more likely you are still somewhat in the clear. Committee is meeting this upcoming Tuesday, so lets hope for something...

edit: UCR reserved seats is 24 not 26. BTW for you UCR people, 8 of those 24 seats have already been filled guaranteed through their early decision. So 16 potential seats left.

Thanks for the update!

I'm curious to know why people have gotten rejected pre interview, and pre secondary so quickly..while others are still waiting on an interview...

Does that mean they are still weighing their options?

Do you know how many non UCR seats have been filled?

Have you got an interview yet? This is the longest cycle ever.

What is your source on the bolded claim? I'm not at all accusing you of lying, I'm just curious as to where you are getting this information from as to my knowledge, you are a premed just like the rest of us! 🙂
Thats what I'm wondering. I would like some information from the Admissions Office on this statement.

Hello everyone, this is my first post to this thread, although I've been following it for quite a while. I hopefully will be applying to ucr this upcoming application cycle. My question with regard to acceptances is do they send out more acceptances than spots available for each class?

Basically every medical school does this.

I have heard this numerous times. There is some confusion with the "24 people". can it be less than 24? can it be more than 24? The answer to both are no. It is exactly 24. I have asked upon this topic a few times, although I have never directly heard it from the admissions office.

Thanks for all the info! But luckily (or unluckily) this isn't true. It can be less than 24 people, and it can be more than 24 people, all depending on how qualified the UCR alum applicants are. "Saved" seats merely means they want to fill them with UCR alum, and will do their best to. A couple years ago, they saved 48 seats for Alum, but only 46 were accepted for this same exact reason. If there are more than 24 UCR alum that compete well with the non-UCR applicants, they will be considered. My info is from HPAC convos with counselors.

Correct. I gave a long response on this earlier in thread.

Not at all! I am actually happy that I am able to cite my sources just so you all can double and triple check.

This is directly from the calling the school. They always maintain that their last date is in march. Which makes sense because by 15 March, schools have to send out as many acceptances as seats they have. 4 interview dates left because there are 11 total. 6 before the new year, and one happened this past saturday. BTW if you count every alternate week from now, it is in March.

I asked about this. She said "historically" this is what UCR has done. Also, it makes sense.

called them to ask about this. This Tuesday they meet again. I think it is probably to discuss last week's interview, but who knows if a few others hear back!

Also directly from calling the school. They said their early decision

applicants were extraordinary and although they did not expect to accept 8, they felt really good about all of them.

I have no idea of the exact number. But there are 36 non-UCR seats to fill, so post interview non-UCR alum are in a better position. (only once you have gotten the interview).

Also guys I forgot to mention, when I called a few days ago to inquire about updates, the person I spoke to did not seem very excited about us sending them in. She said only significant updates after an interview. So I guess that could mean that for you pre-interview, go ahead and update. update. update. Also, not sure how excited they are about letters intending to register. I had thought that since it is such a mission based school, they would love the commitment, but I also felt like it wasn't as loved as I had anticipated.

One last piece of information: This I got from a friend. He said that they are putting off accepting low MCAT/GPA people until they are sure that they have enough people to buff their board statistics. I heard that the last year's class took boards and the school wasn't too thrilled with the scores so they wanted to make sure they improved their academic threshold this year. Usually they are more focused on mission and you can squeeze by if you are a fit if you are lacking in a couple academic areas. This year, I guess, not so much. This is heresay though. I heard this from a friend, and although I most defintiely believe him, he's not a "credible" source.

Sorry for the long post. I just wanted to keep this thread moving with information!

EDIT: grammar/cleaning up
While some of your information is accurate, there are some fallacies throughout it that I would expect from heresay. I will clear the record. It is not exactly 24 UCR alums it's "up to 24". There are years where there have been less than 24 UCR alums in a class.

Second, they do review applicants that they are interested in despite it being quite a time since the interview. As I have said before, it really is not over until the white coat ceremony (latest acceptance I know of was approximately 1 month before orientation). With that said, it is always a good idea to keep updating the admissions committee with activities. I do agree you should not be sending in snippets of tedious work. It should be substantial and tacked along with a description on why it furthers your future goals and how it will further UCR's mission.

Third, it is absolutely, 100% FALSE that the administration was unpleased with the Class of 2017's board scores. On the contrary they were thrilled with the scores because we scored above the national average and excelled in areas of the boards that traditionally other schools do sub par in. The board statistics are fine. I understand your friend provided you with information, but my information comes directly from a dean at the school of medicine.

For those of you still waiting to hear back do not give up! I assure you that it takes persistence and real drive to get into medical school. I have colleagues that had applied to medical school over 4 times before finally getting accepted. Others had to do substantial commitments to prove their intentions. Keep working on improving your apps whether that be in deficient areas (MCAT, GPA, etc) or by augmenting it with new experiences or expanding on current experiences that bolster your own mission and drive in medicine and essentially provide evidence to your commitment to medicine that you write in your personal statements.

Yes however UCR has I believe the highest or second highest (one of the two) yield percentages in California (essentially this means that when they extend an acceptance, that person comes). This was true for my class, however I do not know what the yield has been since then. Thus I really encourage you to take care to your secondaries when you receive them because they read every word in them. Same with your apps. You would be surprised by the mistakes people make in the EC section because it is deemed as "less critical". Good luck with apps!

Don't feel too bad, I applied last year and was told that despite strong letters, grades, and scores, I didn't fit the UCR mission well enough because I didn't show enough activity in my community (as a student whose parents both received multiple degrees from ucr, who completed multiple community service projects on and off campus every quarter, did research on campus, had 2 on campus jobs, had 4 ucr staff/faculty write letters, was active in multiple clubs/organizations on campus, and was awarded a partial merit scholarship involving my commitment to the future of the ucr community). Yeah, imagine my face after hearing that one.

So naturally after graduating I did more community service/volunteering/working and am still waiting to hear back on the 2nd go around.

Its frustrating but what can you do? I still wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

I commend your persistence. Hoping for success 🙂

Would you mind sharing what the stats were? Or at least what standard deviation above the national average the class performed?

I cannot because the administration has not released that as of now. Some schools release that (UVA is one I can think of immediately) but many do not. Stay tuned for the match list.

Doesn't the match list come out next year, after we hear where the 4th years got in? I thought the first class entered in 2013, so the most senior class right now is in the middle of 3rd year.

Correct. I was alluding to that to find out how good the scores were it should be partly reflected by their matched specialities and locations.

Thanks! When you wrote soon I thought you meant this coming May. Can't wait to see where the first class of students go!

Oh I see how that can be interpreted like that sorry! I'm excited to see where they go to 🙂

Do you guys know how strict they are with the two week secondary submission? I had to wait to hear back from my mentors and it took longer than expected and I ended submitting the secondary 1 day after the 2 week mark. I wonder if that's hurting me right now 🙁

I don't think it will hurt - now is the hard part the waiting game
